The tale of Kuchi Sake Onna
One day a man saw a beautiful woman standing on the side of the road. He pulled up and offered her a ride. She wore flowing white and had a scarf covering her face He looked at her from his rear view mirror, entranced by her beauty.
"Am I pretty (kirei)?"
"Yes, you are pretty (kirei)."
She pulled the scarf from her face, revealing a terrible smile. She had her mouth cut from cheeks to ear and tounge twisted back and forth in her gaping mouth.
"Am I pretty?" she asked again
He screamed while looking into his rear-view mirror. She asked him over and over until she eventually killed him. He was found with his mouth slit open, just like kuchi sake onna's.
Long ago there was a beautiful woman. She was extremely vain, and spent all of her time focusing on her appearance. One day, her husband grew sick of her vanity, so he cut her mouth from cheek to ear on both sides. She died, and now roams the world for vengance.
She roams the world, looking for revenge. She looks beautiful and always has somthing over her mouth (a scarf, medical mask, ect) Kuchi sake onna always asks her victims if she is pretty. If they answer no, she kills them on the spot. Answer yes, and she will uncover her mask and ask it again. If you say she isnt pretty the second time, she kills you. If you say yes, she cuts your mouth the same way.
Japanese for pretty is kirei. This can also mean 'cut' The japanese legend uses a play on words.
There are a few ways to escape kuchi sake onna. They differ from region to region. One is to say you are 'average'. She will get confused, and you can escape. Another is to repeat the question to her, also causing confusion. A good way is to say you have a previous engagement to attend to. She will excuse herself and leave out of politness. Rock candy is also said to scare her away in some places.

UltimateFanKohaku I would just tell her to let me see her creepy smile of death 3nodding It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, I would be even more scared if I asked her that. Hahaha.
But this is super interesting! Now I need to look up more Japanese legends, etc. :] and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.
