Formation of the Wher Guard
The Wher Guard was formed in the 31st turn of the prison’s existence. Seeing that the islanders were more concerned with their mutant dragons than with the prison, Ghenza sent a group of wherhandlers to take charge of the prisoners instead. The original members were ordered to stay neutral to the conflict over new colors, and ignore it to the best of their abilities. When the White Guard was formed to look after the prisoners’ dragons, the Wher Guard began to work closely with them.
Duties
Currently, the Wher Guard is responsible for overseeing the human population of the prison. Wherhandlers may encourage their whers to use force against prisoners if necessary. This isn’t to say that the Wher Guard values highly aggressive whers. They have access to Ghenza’s herbal mix, and often use it to enhance the intelligence of their whers. It’s important that whers used for guarding prisoners are intelligent and calm enough to work with other whers and their human partners if necessary. The Wher Guard isn’t in the business of torturing prisoners, and whers that are hopelessly vicious will not be allowed around prisoners.
All whers on the Islands are members of the Guard in some form. If a wher is unsuitable for guard work with the prisoners themselves for some reason (it may be too aggressive, too passive, frail, lazy, unwilling to work with others, or even just poorly trained) it will be used elsewhere. Whers may be used in traditional capacities as watch-whers or laborers, or any other task their handlers can think of.
Joining the Wher Guard
Since they may come in contact with prisoners, the Guard rarely gives wher eggs to people that are too young. They prefer potential handlers to be at least 17 turns of age.
Potential handlers are expected to be sensible and hardworking. Knowing a current Guard doesn't hurt, either.
