Maya giggled softly to herself as she opened up the paper bag she held between her legs. Pulling out one long, pale pink ribbon, she stared at it with rapt ruby eyes before diving into the bag for another ribbon. This time white, and lace. She sat outside a dress and accessories store on the bench, pulling at the neatly wrapped ribbons and creating a messy, chaotic yarn of various thickness and length.

She was having the time of her life.

"Amy?" she called, looking behind her to see that her guardian was still inside speaking with the shop keeper. Well, shopkeepers and dressmakers... they were all the same sometimes, weren't they? With a slight sigh, she turned back to her bag of ribbons.

Amy had said that this was going to go to a dress she was making for her. She was curious to know what it would look like - after all, it was a present! Which was always a great thing. She liked the ribbons as well, she'd been allowed to choose all of them, and she felt proud knowing that they'd decorate the dresses and skirts of Amy's creations.

"Happy." she murmured to herself, pulling at the ball of ribbons.

A dress for a princess was only fitting, Leyla had decided; and Vate was quick to please his only daughter, and so despite the man's protests (and exclaiming that Leyla had several closets full already) they found themselves outside a dress shop. The dark elf hoisted his daughter out of her stroller and onto his nearly non-existant hip so she could look into the shop's windows.

"See anything you like?" he asked, flashing Leyla a smile. Knowing his daughter, she would want every dress in the store. She had a tendency for greed.

"Oooh," Leyla said, though the infant wasn't looking at the dresses. She was looking at Maya. "Hello," she said with a smile that revealed her fangs. "You belong to Leyla."

Hello?

Maya looked up, her hands still clutching now the even more tangled wad of ribbons and lace and smiled back instinctively. Look, someone wanted to talk to her! This was Leyla and...

Well, wow. She had never belonged to anyone before. Staring at the taller man who was holding her new owner and then at her owner herself, she blinked once, then twice.

She had fangs.

Wasn't that just the coolest thing?

"Maya." she said, introducing herself, blinking again. And she belonged to this person because... "Never belonged to anyone."

Well, that was the truth.

"Pleasure to meet you, Maya," Vate took advantage of Leyla's sudden interest in a silvery flower girl's dress to speak to the toddler. "She means she wants to be your friend," he added with a smile. "Where are your parents?" Surely no adult would leave a little girl unattended. Not in this day and age. "Are you lost?" He asked gently.

"Her mommy's in the store," Leyla informed her father. "I can hear her talking. Are you getting a dress, too, Maya? Daddy's going to get me a dress because I'm his princess."

Vate sighed. He would never get used to hearing an infant speak so well; even if the infant in question was his.

Friend! She understood that. She grinned. Friends were good. She was meeting so many people these days, and it made her happy. Shaking her head and listening to Leyla answer for her, her grin widened. Well, she liked this girl.

"No, no dress. Mom makes dresses." she answered back, looking down at the ribbons. Said mom was also going to be a little bit angry once she realized what she had done with the ribbons. Holding it out on display, she said proudly "Going to add them to my dress. Make it pretty. Special." she nodded her head.

Princess? Blinking, she ducked her head shyly. "Mom doesn't call me princess."

Vate smiled. It had been a while since Leyla had met a girl so close to her age; and he wasn't sure if he approved of the influence Eve had on his baby. "She makes dresses? How nice." How old fashioned; he liked that in a woman. The elf wasn't much more than a teenager--in elven terms. "Oh, your ribbons are all tangled," he observed with a frown. "Want me to untangle them?"

"Daddy's good at untangling," Leyla informed her newest friend. "He untangles necklaces and ties and strings--" she paused. "Your hair is very pretty. Why aren't you a princess, too?"

Maya looked up in surprise at Vate. He could untangle it? He was good at things like that? How funny... maybe dad's had different gifts compared to moms. Moms were good at cooking and making dresses, in her books. Maybe dads were good at the other stuff her Amy wasn't so talented at (like fixing things... and untangling big balls of yarn...). Holding it out to him, she smiled.

"Yes please."

Looking back at Leyla, she beamed. "Thank you!" she said. She liked her hair too: she'd just only recently met a boy who had the same color, and sometimes when she worked very hard, she could make a tail in the same color too.

It wasn't too good yet... it took too much practice.

"I dunno." she frowned. Maybe being a princess was a special thing...
