You didn't do anything wrong its just slow sometimes.
To answer your question Smok isn't really that popular,I go for something a bit better.That's just my opinion

If you want to see what's a good investment, past performance is VERY important. Check the yearly graphs to see what's been rising and what hasn't, and that should give you a good idea of what to invest in.
@Tech: we do have a list, but it is in no way absolute. :)
