A bit of history:
He was born in the city of Ar'uvandarel in Great Val'andarel, in a house of an olive's merchant. His father traided and grew olives, olive oil and other related products like half the people of the Empire. He joined the Legion's Army when he became 14 and has been there ver since. Serving in training until 18 and in border's outposts for what seemed an eternity. After a small war against their neighbouring country, he was promoted Sergeant and became part of the Elite Legion, in which he underwent further training and more service. It was in this Legion were he became acquainted with Jonas; both were part of the same squad, a group of roughly 8 men, size according to need and casualties.
In the last Andaleshian war they served, they found themselves (the squad under his leadership) in a battle of two fronts: swords and magic. They were trusted with 'recovering' and item from the enemy who was being currently used by one of the most adept magicians in the service of his King (the enemie's). His was not the only squadron sent, and after a deadly confrontation with some of the most powerful mages of O'Shramdat (and a dozen of well-trained bodyguards) only Gaud and Jonas made it alive from their squad, and only five others came back none from the same squadron, three dying after several days of agonizing under powerful spells or from deadly wounds. Of the other two, one is with Jonas and Gaud and the other became a General, with the title of Senator of the Magistrate in the Empire.
After this he cashed his soldier's pay for his years of service, built a house for his parents and put up a small business of 'hired swords' for travelling agents of sorts along with Jonas and Asbot (the other surviving elite soldier). Until now, they reputation precedes them (at least in the city of Ar'uvandarel and other neighbouring cities) and the pay is good with a minimum of risk.
He is a bit of a practical man, with a sort of dull charisma that can only grow in a brotherly way. He is more than friends and partners with the other two ex-elite soldiers and they would trust him and his decisions with their lifes (something that has been proven fruitful more than once). But as young men they like to take some risks, especially involving women (mostly Jonas) or gambling/competition (mostly Asbot) and it's usually up to Gaud to bail them out of trouble (and discount that money from their payments, of course).
He likes to smile even when everything is blight, but his sense of humour is cinic at best if not acid. He is a handsome man and his smile lightens up his features which in turn can bring some women around to have second thoughts about that 'tough' face/look of him looking almost boyish with his best grin.
He enjoys life as it is and saves for the future. However it is often Jonas or Asbot who drags him into the present for a little mischief or enjoyment. Withouth them he would be more of a lonely 'captain/soldier' himself.
