I'm thinking of quitting my high school orchestra.... I am fed up with my orchestra director, and our school orchestra sounds terrible. I play in two youth orchestras outside of school and two chamber groups.... is it really that important that I'm in high school orchestra? The two youth orchestras I'm in are well known and 100 times better than school orchestra. I want to go into music would it look really bad if I didn't have school orch on my college resume???

As much as I would like to comment on the apparant 'is music in school really that important' part, I will ignore it. It looks good on a college resume to have active parts in both school and outside normal life. So being in two youth orchestras, especially one well known, will look really good when applying for college, especially if you are going into music. I've never been in orchestra, since my school's so small it doesn't have one (and saxes aren't in orchestra), but I've been playing the alto saxophone since sixth grade, and four years of marching band, two years of junior high concert and four years of high school concert band.

If you want to go into a college on music then absolutly. Any chance you have to put on your resume about music the better. If you go into collage for a different reason then it wouldn't be so bad for you to quit band.

If you've been doing music in high school, it shouldn't hurt anything much. Being involved in community performance groups definitely look good, and if you're unhappy in school music then quit. Normally I wouldn't encourage quitting but you have those options available to you that sound much more enjoyable and rewarding. You will probably have more opportunities to grow as a musician in your out-of-school orchestras than in-school.

I know that high school band is important to some extent, I'm not quitting band or choir, just orchestra, but I feel like orchestra is reallllly dragging me down. My director has been angry at me all year for doing two youth orchestras, I had 1 conflict with school orchestra and youth orchestra that screwed me over for youth orchestra, and ever since that conflict (even though had to do school over youth orchestra) my director has been giving me death stares and always picking on me! Its not like he's writing me a college recommendation, I just want to get out. I gave him four years of dedication (i was one of 2 freshman in orchestra) and I mess up once, and he hates me.

It depends on what school you are going to as to whether having a lot of music activities on your resume will look good.

For instance, my university has a College of Letters and Sciences, under which there is a Music department. When you apply to that college you don't have to specify your intended major, so it doesn't matter whether your activities are in music or something else. I also did not have to audition until after I was already accepted.

Now, if you are applying to a university that has a separate School of Music, or to a conservatory, then I imagine having a lot of music activities on your application would be much more important. So I would recommend you check with the schools you're thinking about applying to regarding that.

Either way, the quality of your extracurricular activities is more important than the quantity. It's better to be heavily involved in a few groups at most than to dabble in many different things. It shows that you can be committed and focused. If you like the community groups better than your high school groups, I think you should quit the latter and focus your energy on the former.

I can see what you are saying with for more competitive schools more looks good.... my top school is a conservatory, but 4 people in the horn studio there came out of the youth orchestra program I am in...... I don't know if they did high school music or not, but overall I think youth orchestra would look better than my high school group (times 100) because you have to audition to get in there. I needed to audition to get into the school group, but in school I was up against 3 other horn players in comparison to 30 with youth orchestra
