Let's write a story together!
You can write as much as you want, or as little as you want (though I'd prefer if you tried to make it at least a paragraph or two). You can introduce new plot elements, new characters, etc. Your parts can have humor, drama, suspense, whatever you feel will make the story better. Just make sure that what you're adding MAKES SENSE in the context of the story. Think of it kinda like RPing, except that there aren't a whole lot of rules and you control more than one character (like all of them) at any given time.
If you're the last person to post in the story, don't post again until either someone else posts after you, or 72 hours have gone by. Why 72? I dunno, just an arbitrary number to give other people an opportunity to write. SPEAKING of which, if someone else says that they're going to post, or "calls dibs" on a particular section, don't just ninja in front of them. Collaborating means WORKING TOGETHER for a COMMON GOAL. Talk to each other about what you both have in mind. You could easily both post and not get in each others' way.
At the end of your post after you write your section, write a little summary (especially if your section was long) just to emphasize the important things that happened.
If you introduce a character or a plot element that you have plans for later, and don't want someone to write something that will mess it up, say something about it! Don't expect us to just magically know what you have planned.
The individuals who have contributed to the story will have majority veto power against ridiculous shenanigans. So don't think that we automatically have to accept the flying spaghetti monster that you make terrorize the planet.
...I think that's it.

The night air was crisp and chilly, and the sliver of moon in the sky was obscured by clouds. The city streets were darker than usual, perfect for an enterprising thief to sneak around unnoticed. On that night, Melody was one such thief. As she walked the cobblestone roads, anyone passing her by (were anyone else walking the streets at that hour) would probably mistake her for a common bard, a traveling vagrant, which essentially was what she was. She had never stolen anything in her life. Well...sort of. Nothing important at least. That would change tonight.
The inn she was staying at was only a short distance away from the mage's guildhall. She thought back over the day's events. It had almost been too easy to enter the guildhall that morning. After all, the guild was always looking for new applicants (and new applicant fees to be paid), and who better than a bard to want to learn a new spell or two? Naturally she would want to check the place out, and one particular young man was more than happy to show her around the facilities. He hadn't even noticed when she unlocked the window in one of the back rooms. Assuming that no one had bothered to check before closing up for the night, getting back in would be a piece of cake.
She turned a corner and saw the walls of the hall down the road in front of her. There didn't appear to be any lights on. Still, she would have to be cautious. There was no telling what kind of alarms, wards, traps or enchantments might be on the building or anything inside. "Look like you belong, look like you belong," she told herself. No one would question her. No one would be there. But still...
As she entered the archway leading onto the grounds of the guildhall, she glanced around and saw not a soul. Stepping with purpose, she made her way up to the building and around to the back. With luck, her window would still be open. If not...well, perhaps there would be another way in. She slowed her pace as she approached the window and glanced in. It was a break area of sorts with soft chairs and a pantry inside. She bit down on her lower lip and took a deep breath, reaching for the window to test it...

SUMMARY
Melody, a traveling bard, is attempting to sneak into the mage's guild at night to steal something inside. She's about to try opening a window that she hopes will still be unlocked.

It was the smell of the aroma that brought him here. Leon knew he had problems with good smelling food. His master from school had sent him here to begin his "descent into manhood." Leon thought back at his masters last sermon: "Knowledge is almost as, if not more important than wielding a sword. I want you to learn more about the world, starting with visiting this city." He had just recently graduated and found himself in this bunk town. "Ugh, this is a city of mages. Great. Master Koshi must have had SOME reason for me going here. Crazed old man."
The city was huge. Buildings as far as the eye could see, and no Inn in sight. Leon sighed. Someone had to know something about this city. Problem was, it was pitch black. Traveling through the Rovingwood plains had been tiring. He shuddered thinking of the amount of wrong turns he took. And to top it all off, he had to go to some Mage city full of uptight "smarty pants" who couldn't wield a weapon if it meant slicing cheese. Hell, they probably have some oh-so convenient spell for that. Leon snickered to himself as he thought about a slogan for mages: "Magic: There's a spell for that."
He was tired and irritated. And no one was around, being the dead of night. And, when all hope seemed lost, he spotted a girl staring inside a window. Her eyes beamed like she'd won the lottery or something. "Maybe she knows where an Inn is. She looks like a good person. And I know those eyes: She definitely wants food." He cupped his hands around his mouth. "Hey, you there! The girl looking through the window! You know where an Inn is?"

Shocked by someone's presence, she quickly runs away, leaving Leon standing in the midst of darkness, confused. "I guess I just have to keep on looking for an inn then." Leon inferred. Continuing to wander through the darkness, he suddenly finds himself very tired and unable to keep traveling. Walking into a small alleyway and sitting down against a wall, he tries to keep himself warm while trying to ignore his hunger.
Melody finally stops after a good run. "Who was that man? Did he know what I was up to? He better not." she thought, drinking water she got from a well, "Whoever he was, I don't think it's safe to try to sneak in tonight again, better try tomorrow night. If he alarms the people in that guild, my chances of stealing that artifact."
He jumps onto another building, spying Melody. Planning the best time to strike, he keeps traveling from roof to roof, spying her from all angles. Though being in the city for a short while now, Shinigake still finds the foreign place strange. "Inns? What was that man talking about? He better not steal my prey. If I dare return empty-handed, my master shall have my head." Preparing a small throwing knife, he aims at Melody's head, but trying to get a better view and aim, he accidentally scrapes the edge of the building with his knife.
Hearing a soft sound, Melody quickly stands up. "Great, now they're after me. I better starting getting away, before they capture me and announce me as a thief." Heading back to her inn by an irregular and strange route, she quickly goes back to her room, locking the windows, locking the doors. Feeling fear of shadows for unexplainable reasons, she puts her candle light out. Being in darkness, she decide the only thing left to do is to sleep.
---
Summary:
Leon surprised Melody and made her think he caught her trying to sneak in. Having nowhere to go due to utter darkness, he decide to rest in an alleyway.
Melody decides that it wasn't safe to try stealing that night anymore.
A mysterious man named Shinikage appears to be stalking Melody, wanting to kill her.
Shinikage's slight movement sound surprised Melody, so she decides to run back to her inn.

Tossing and turning, Melody found sleep would not come easily. She was upset with herself. She had told herself that she would be prepared, cool, calm, collected. And yet at the first notice from someone, she bolted. No...no, it was probably the right choice. In the event that someone WAS still in the guildhall, they would have undoubtedly heard the strange man who called out to her.
But now what? The scroll was only going to be in the guildhall for another day. If she didn't steal it by tomorrow night, the very next morning it would be on its way back to the castle. There was no way she would be able to break into a place like that. Well, at least not on her own.
She rolled over once more under her sheets and clutched her pillow tightly. "Don't worry, Kin..." she whispered to no one in particular. "I'll get it...you're gonna be ok..."
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
Being a swordsman was not a glamorous position. Oh no. On top of the brutal training and the harsh realities of war, one often found themselves on the road, far from home, with little but the clothing on their back and their blade to keep them company. And if you had a master like Leon's, money and spare food were also luxuries that one did not require.
"A true warrior's currency is the skill of his blade! If you can starve while you hold a weapon in your hands, you have no right to call yourself a swordsman!" The words came back to Leon as he sat in the alleyway with rats crawling around him. It was true, he supposed. Unpractical, but true. He had hoped he would be able to earn some money from a bounty or something by now, but hadn't had any luck. Without money, even if he found the inn, he wasn't sure how he would be able to pay for it. After all, not everywhere accepted manual labor as a form of payment.
A door opened a short distance away off to his right side. He turned his head to look. A somewhat plump man had a large tray of what appeared to be...was that leftover food? From some kind of dinner, perhaps. Food. Delicious...food...
"Hey!" He called out. The plump man, who was about to drop the contents of the tray into a drain stopped and looked towards him.
"Yes?" The man replied.
"Are you throwing that away?"
"...yes?"
"Would you mind if I took it off your hands for you?"
"Sorry kid, it's against inn policy to feed anyone but paying customers. Even if it is leftover." Leon blinked and paused for a moment.
"Did you say inn?" He asked.
"Yeah..." the man said, giving him a strange glance. "It's written in the sign out front. You can read, can't you?"
"Well, of course I can. I just...I guess I got lost."
"Swell." The man dumped the food into the drain and went back to the open doorway.
"Say," Leon called out to him again.
"What now, kid?"
"...could you use any help around here?"
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
SUMMARY
Melody contemplates the fact that tomorrow is her last chance to steal the scroll before it gets moved back to the castle. Also, she thinks back on someone named Kin.
Meanwhile, Leon, who was sent out by his master with no food or money, discovers that the inn he seeks is on the other side of the alleyway he's in now. He asks an employee who discovers him if he can help, hoping for a place to sleep after.
NOTES! Laharl, that "There's a spell for that" made me lol. I want you to know that.
So, just to keep things straight (and correct people in case they get contradicted down the road at some point)...this is a big city, largely populated by mages, and is near a place called Rollingwood Plains. Ok. Also, Leon seems to have a bad sense of direction (Ryoga much? xd ), but that might not stick.

Shinikage looks into the window of the inn from two buildings away. By the looks of how Melody has fallen asleep, he decides that it's the best time to strike. Hopping silently across building tops, he arrives at the window. Unlocking it quietly with his tools, he sneaks in. Raising his dagger and sneaking towards the bed, and he look at the peaceful sleeping face.
"How could I kill someone like this?" he looks at his dagger and lowers it slightly, but then his master's words came back to him: "Do not show mercy for the weak, do not sympathize for your prey, your top priority is to finish your mission, and that is your only function."
"That is my only function." He whispers silently to himself. He draws the dagger blade close to Melody's neck, but before he could sink the blade in, a loud crash downstairs in the inn made him withdraw his dagger. He turns around to the door, and quickly turns back, only to be greeted by Melody's fist. He falls to the floor and quickly stand up and jumps out the window.
---
Summary:
Shinikage, the ninja, sneaks in and tries to kill Melody. But his humanity kicks in and he hesitates, until he remembers his master's words to him. But before he could kill Melody, a loud crash sounded downstairs and Melody is awake. Shinikage quickly jumps out the window.
Note:
This happens after the inn person gives some advice to Leon and Leon entering the inn. :O be sure to include what the advices are later in the story, feel free to make them minor or major.

"...and let me tell you, he was NOT happy about that." Leon said with a chuckle. He found himself drying off a number of glasses in the kitchen alongside the plump man whose name he had learned was Renaldo. Behind the two of them stood the owner of the inn, Cedric, a tall man with a fading hairline and a thin beard.
"I see..." Renaldo said with a sideways glance.
"I just want to thank you again for letting me stay here tonight," Leon said turning to Cedric. "I don't even care that it's not an actual room, I'm just glad to be in here out of the cold."
"You're lucky my wife's out of town visiting family," Cedric replied. "If you'd asked her, she would have thrown that tray of food right at your head. Stingy woman, she is. But the way I see it, you're not taking any rooms away from paying customers by sleeping in the kitchen. And hard workers are difficult to come by." The last part was spoken with a sharp nod to Renaldo.
"Well, hopefully after tomorrow I'll have something to give you. There's bound to be some kind of need for a skillset like mine in a place like this."
"A place like this?" the innkeeper said curiously. "How do you mean?"
"Well, you know. Isn't Valecin mostly a mage hotspot? Not many warriors here from what I've heard."
"Well, this is true. But you may find it more difficult to find people in need of your 'skills' than you think. Magic has an incredible range of applications. What...was it you said you came here for again?"
"Well..." Leon said, trailing. "I'm not entirely sure what the master expects me to learn from this place."
"Could it be, perhaps, for you to learn magic that could augment your swordsmanship?"
"Learn magic?" Leon turned around quickly, accidentally bumping into Renaldo. The metal trays in his hands clattered to the floor in an awful racket, probably loud enough to wake the dead, let alone anyone who might be a light sleeper upstairs. Leon blushed sheepishly. "Uh...heh, sorry. I just...I don't think so."
"Well, why not?" Cedric asked.
"Magic is just far too...what's the word I'm looking for..."
"KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" The three men looked towards the door to the kitchen. Someone upstairs was screaming, and LOUD. Cedric rushed to the door with Leon following close behind him. Walking through the empty dining room, and into the inn lobby, the two of them witnessed a young woman with long, blue hair bolting down the stairs. She was barefoot, wearing only a simple nightgown.
"Miss, are you quite alright?" Cedric asked, concern spreading across his face.
"No I am not alright!" the girl shouted. "There was a FREAK in my room just now! And I think he had a knife!"
"Now, now, just calm down, please," Cedric said, waving his hands. If she kept yelling like this, there wouldn't be a soul left sleeping. "You're saying that there was an armed intruder in your room? Is he still there?"
"No," the girl said, shaking somewhat. "I woke up when I heard this noise and I looked up and there they were standing over me. And I just freaked out and hit them. Then they went out the window and I ran down here."
"I shall call for the city guards immediately. They can't have gone far." Cedric turned to walk behind the lobby's main counter.
"No!" The suddenness with which she spoke startled the two men. "I mean...they...I don't want to have to make a statement or anything..."
"I assure you, miss...miss..."
"Melody."
"Miss Melody, I'll only ask that the guards search the area for suspicious persons. Now what did this person look like?"
"I didn't really get a chance to see," Melody said. "It was dark. I think they were wearing black. I'm honestly not sure."
"Well...I suppose that will have to do. Now I really must call for them if we want to have any hope of apprehending this person." Cedric walked behind the counter and reached under it, feeling around for an calling crystal.
"But what am I supposed to do?" Melody asked, still quite distraught. "What if they come back? What am I supposed to do? I can't...I'm scared."
"Um, excuse me..." Leon cleared his throat and spoke up finally. "If you don't mind, I would be willing to keep watch in your room in case anyone comes back."
The girl looked at him. He seemed strangely familiar. "Who are you? I didn't know this inn had a security team."
"I'm nothing official like that," Leon said, grinning. "But I am skilled in close quarter combat. If you're scared to go back to your room and you don't want to stay up for the rest of the night, it's probably the best offer you could hope for in this situation. And besides...I kinda don't have a room to stay in myself."
Melody raised an eyebrow. "Sure..." she said after a moment. "I suppose I don't have anything to lose. What's your name?"
"Leon," Leon said. "Nice to meet you." Melody didn't respond, but she did give him a small smile. She turned back towards the stairs and began up them with Leon accompanying her.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
SUMMARY
The innkeeper suggests to Leon that perhaps he was sent to Valecin (ZOMG city's name) to learn magic to aid his skills as a swordsman. Shortly after, Melody runs downstairs, having been startled by her attacker. The innkeeper calls for the city guards to search the area (I imagine looking for a ninja will have them come up with nothing), while Leon offers to guard Melody in her room (mostly so he'll have a room to stay in instead of the kitchen). Melody accepts.

Guilt fills up Shinikage as he sits on a rooftop. "I knew it. I knew I was going to fail. Why did I even bother trying? Just to prove myself right. What did my master see in me? Why did he think I was going to succeed? I never successfully do anything."
Suddenly, lanterns appear in the streets. Soldiers in armor appear, running around. Shinikage quickly jump from building to building, but he notices that guards seems to be noticing movements on rooftops, since they keep on pointing at them. Dropping down into an alleyway, he presses against a wall and keeps in the shadows as he quietly sneaks onto the street. Looking in all directions, he quickly jumps into the sewer.
---
Leon opens his eyes and sees the bleak night. He turns around to see Melody sitting in her bed and looking out the window.
"It's okay, ma'am, you're safe. You can go back to sleep." Leon assures Melody.
"It's nothing like that." Melody keeps staring outside.
Peering outside the window and trying to see what was so interesting, Leon asks, "What's the matter then? What're you staring at?"
Melody sighs and lies back down. "It's nothing. Go back to guard duty."
Leon leans back against his wall and closes his eyes, thinking, "What was she staring at? What was so interesting? Wait..that direction.. I remember earlier tonight seeing a woman peering in the window of that building..what was the building? I don't quite remember seeing the name of it..could she be...?..nah, just a coincidence.
---
Summary:
Shinigake feels guilty, and then escapes guards by jumping into the sewer.
Leon notices that Melody seems to be staring at a building which he earlier saw a woman peering into a window of.

Dawn had just broke through the must old room on the second floor of the Inn. As Leon awoke with a stretch, he had realized he fell asleep in Melodies room. "Ah crap. I hope she's alri-" Leon's eyes grew wide as he noticed the empty bed. "Oh God. Oh God!! She's gone! What if that assassin killed her? What if she was eaten!? What if she was killed by evil rabid bunnies and forced to become their leader!?"
As Leon went through these ideas in his head, Melody came back into the room, with a sweet smile on her face. "Oh, so you're awake. I hope the blanket and pillow I laid out for you were good enough to keep you comfortable." Leon looked at her in awe. She was just a bit shorter than he was. Thin, but not too thin to wield a sword. Her blue hair shimmered inthe sunlight. Leon began to feel warm in his face.
"Here. I brought you some breakfast, Some home cooked pancakes, a side of some fresh Sausages, and a bit of tart pastries." She gracefully walked towards Leon. "Here." She handed him the plate. As he grabbed it, he felt her soft hands. He turned a new shade of red. While he ate his breakfast, he noticed Melody eyeballing him as he ate, with a white, toothy smile. As he finished his pancake and began on his sausage, Melody asked him, "Do you have something you need to do today?" "N-not particularly..." he stuttered. "Well, this town his absolutely huge...and I'm all alone here. A little girl like me could be easily attacked, or...worse! You wouldn't want that on your conscience would you? I just need to go run some...errands."
Leon swallowed. He may not have liked th,e way she said that, and he did have his doubts about her being too weak, but how could he say no to a request like that? "Um, okay...We can go right after I finish breakfast...if you don't mind."

Leon follows Melody with certain doubts. "Where are we going again?" he asks, for the third time as they stroll through the busy morning street.
Melody smiles, "To the mage's guildhall, of course! That place is so interesting! The man that showed me around yesterday was really nice too! I look forward to seeing him again!"
Blocking the sun with his arm, he asks her, "Interesting. By the way, what were you looking at last night? Definitely not the moon, since it's just a slice, and definitely not the peasants' homes."
Melody remains quiet, which Leon find very odd, therefore he just goes on to ask something else."Is that the mage's guildhall you're talking about?" he points.
"Oh yes!" Melody quickly walk over to the guildhall, which had a busy entrance of young magic-users of all kinds wanting to sign up.
---
Trudging through the thick sewers, Shinikage looks around, trying to remember the routes he walked through last night. Avoiding manholes as much as possible, he wanders around. Finally, when he found the one he was looking for, he tries to see through it, through the mass of feet moving about.
"This must be it," he thought, noticing the common direction the feet are moving in and the topics talked about, "this was where the girl said she wanted to go. I just have to wait for the right chance to sneak in."
Sitting down against the sewer walls to rest, he lifts his right sleeve to reveal monstrous-looking skin. Gray, twisted, and so scab-covered that it hardly looks human. Sighing and putting his sleeve back down, he continues to wait.
---
Summary:
Leon and Melody arrives at the mage's guildhall. On their way, Leon asks about what Melody was staring at, but strangely, she doesn't answer!
Shinikage lurks in the sewers, trying to get somewhere! Also, when he lifts his right sleeve, he reveals an ugly, mutated arm. O.o
