Sakn frowned.
He frowned so deeply that his frown frowned. He frowned because Xiu was late. It wasn't often that his young friend was late, and in the many weeks that they had hung out and met up, this was the first time Sakn had ever felt slightly stood up by the boy. The fisher boy decided right there and then that he didn't like being stood up. It made him feel like a girl. And obviously he had been stood up; why else wouldn't Xiu be here already?
Of course, he didn't take into account that his village was quiet a while away from the city, and the distance between took a few hours to walk.
Why was he so impatient though? Usually Sakn could care less if he was stood up or people were late; often times the redhead was late to events himself! Today was different though, because today he was excited. Today he would have his first spar with Xiu! Over the last few weeks, since that talk on the boat, Sakn and Xiu had gotten together several times, and the redhead had shown his new friend how to throw a punch and how to take a hit. They had practiced nearly every day (because practice makes perfect!..unless it was practicing his meditation or spirit training. Sakn dodged that like the plague.), and the other day Sakn had happily informed Xiu that they would be sparring the next morning.
It was now almost noon.
The redhead kicked at the dusty ground in front of his home and scratched his bare arm as he waited, and when he finally glimpsed a small, vague figure walking down the dirt path towards him, the boy huffed. Finally!
"COM'ON Y'SLOWPOKE!" he yelled, cupping his hands around his mouth, "MAH GRAMMA C'ULD MOVE FASTER DEN YOU!" and while his words were bratty and teasing, there was laughter in his voice, because(though he wouldn't admit it!) Sakn was relieved to see Xiu was actually showing up. He was very glad that Xiu wasn't standing him up.
Which was a stupid girly thought to think. Thankfully no one could read his thoughts.

Master Ziye had made him late! Just as Xiu was getting ready to leave, the man had an odious chore that had to be done NOW. Not later. Xiu didn’t think sweeping the shrine area was more important than his first sparring match, but he was made to do it anyways. He rushed to Sakn after that, eager to to participate in such a new thing. He felt horrible for making his friend wait and prayed he wouldn’t get razzed about. Thankfully though, the two hour walk went by quickly and soon Xiu could see and hear Sakn in the distance.
“I’m coming you growly bear!” He called back cheerfully with an exuberant wave before he picked up his pace and was all but running the last stretch of road towards Sakn. “I’m sorry I’m late! Master made me do chores!” Excitedly, Xiu flung himself at Sakn in a tackle (secretly a hug) shouting out sneak attack in the process. He’d been doing this kind of thing recently, his only defense was that he was honing his skills as a ninja. Of course. It wasn't because he actually liked Sakn hugs. Nope. That wasn't manly at all.
“Are you ready to spar Sakn? Cause I’m so ready to spar.” Xiu, for lack of a better word, bounced around the redhead, brimming with energy. A wise warrior would conserve his strength, like Sakn told him a million times, but Xiu was too happy to care to remember such advice at the moment.
This was to be his first real fight as a man. Sakn had trained him and Xiu had diligently followed his tutelage. While he was still a bit puny, he could actually punch now and knew how to get his enemy down in the dirt. At least, in theory. He had yet to win against Sakn in anything, but he had hopes that today would be the day.
“You ready to lose today?” Xiu nettled confidently with a huge grin, already nudging Sakn to where they usually practiced.

"We--Oof!" was all Sakn managed to say before Xiu tackled him with a ferocity. While the redhead had, for the first couple of time this happened, given his friend a good smack on the head, now he just let it happen. Because sometimes you just have to accept things...grudgingly at least.
The next few moments went by too quickly. Xiu was obviously pumped, which had a smile back on Sakngea's face(HA! Proof that his mother was wrong, and he face wouldn't get stuck in one position. He had been frowning for hours after all!), and he pushed down playfully on the boys head as Xiu tugged him along, urging him to get on with the sparring already.
Of course, when his friend so tauntingly asked him if he was ready to lose, Sakn made a face at him and then raised an eyebrow, "Y'think jus' cuz y'can punch now dat y'can beat me?" he laughed then and teasingly prodded Xiu in the arm, "Y'still too scrawny to beat me, girly," of course, all he said was in jest, just light-hearted teasing.
With one last ruffle of the boys hair, Sakn stepped back and held his fists up in their usual starting stance. "So, le's see what y'got, Xiu!" he said with a laugh, eager to see how far along his little protégé had come with all their training. Not that he expected the boy to beat him yet(or ever really, because in Sakn's mind he could never lose).

“Of course I’ll win!” Xiu crowed. “How can you think otherwise?” His lower lip was pushed out in what he considered to be a warrior’s scowl an he glared up and up at Sakn, returning the poke in turn.
“And I ain’t scrawny or girly either!” The youth’s cheeks turned pink in a mix of embarrassment and anger. Yeah, he knew he was both of those things, but Sakn didn’t have to say it. Sure, the redhead was just teasing. Maybe. That didn’t mean Xiu was about to let it go. He had his manly honor to uphold after all.
“I’ll show you Sakn. Just you wait!” Xiu batted at the hand that ruffled his hair, preparing himself while trying not to smile despite his irritation. It was a good thing that they were already on the training grounds because the moment Sakn brought his fists up, Xiu lunged at him. It was a calculated lunge though, so much more different than what Xiu had been doing at the beginning. It was something that had been practiced.
So, it was with the lunge that started the official sparring lesson in a flurry of dust. Xiu’s temper was up from the taunts. He knew he had fallen for the oldest trick in the book but he was too busy fuming to care. He fought Sakn with everything that he had learned, throwing punches like a real fighter.

Sakn barely had time to dodge the lunge; he had been to busy laughing lightly at how frustrated Xiu had gotten over a little teasing. But now he realized that this was serious, and when Xiu started swinging his fists, Sakn had to actually had to try fending off the swings. He felt the air shocked out of him when a punch got him right in the stomach and he stepped back, holding his side for a moment.
"Ahah," he laughed, eyes crinkled in pain and mirth, "Fur a girl, y'can really pack'a'punch!" there was that same bratty smile on his lips, and then it was Sakn's turn, and he stepped in, taking a low swing for the boy's shoulder, but only to distract him as he swooped a foot out to knock the monk-boy down onto the ground.
"Com'on Xiu, y'gotta try harder then that!" he taunted as he moved, eyes alight with excitement. Sakngea loved sparring, loved fighting. This was where he felt comfortable, natural. Unlike when he was working on mastering control over his qi or speaking with the dead. That had always been uncomfortable and strange; his fists were all he needed.

Adrenalin soared through Xiu. This was an honest to goodness serious fight. Sakn was taking him seriously and he, Xiu, had just gotten in a punch! He was elated and couldn’t help the huge grin that spread across his face. Whether he won or lost, he would now know that he could fight just like anyone else. He wasn’t weak!
Then came the hit to his shoulder and the finishing swip behind his foot that sent him sprawling into the dirt. Xiu yelped out in surprise, butt throbbing. The hurt! To make matters worse, his growing confidence was squashed completely underneath Sakn’s taunts. That…so wasn’t fair! He’d been doing well, or so he’d thought.
“I am not a girl!” Xiu stood, voice ending in a shriek of pure rage. Everything was a bit of a red blur after that. He was panting hard and wasn’t really paying attention as he flung punches as fast as he could, only wanting to send Sakn into the dirt this time. When punching didn’t get him anywhere, Xiu shrieked again (like the girl he wasn’t) and kicked Sakn square in his “special place.”
Done now, Xiu just stood there, heaving for breath and still red in the face, not realizing quite yet what he‘d just accomplished.

t was all a blur. One moment Xiu was rump-down on the ground, glaring up at him, and the next Sakn was dodging a flurry of violent, fast and stinging-sharp punches that hit his arms and stomach with such a ferocity that he was numbed with shock.
Of course, not numb enough to keep from crying out when the younger boy kicked low and between. The redheads face, for a moment, stayed blank, as if his mind hadn't quiet caught up yet. Then suddenly it was like a wave of nausea swept over him and his face paled as he gasped like a fish out of water. It was unlike anything he had felt before, and not something he would ever wish upon anyone else(well, except one certain Captain Jerk).
"I-I-hnnnng--" he managed to get out, as he tried to take a step, only to realize any movement made his whole body scream. Then again, Sakn was never one to give up after the first try, so he slowly took another step.
And fell. Fell hard and painfully face first into the ground. And lay there, rolled on his side in pain. After catching his breath, and feeling much better now that he was laying on the ground and prone, the fisherboy spoke.
"T-time out," he gasped. Maybe for a week. Or two.
"Ouch."
Someone was so getting their head knocked next time he could move without screaming like a girl.

Xiu watched in surprised shock as Sakn staggered. Had he really hit his friend that hard? Xiu looked down at his own fists and then back to Sakn. “Ha! I win!” He crowed in gleeful joy, pumping his fist into the air in self congratulations. The elation was short lived, the sound of Sakn falling face first in the dirt ruining everything. Xiu’s arm dropped from its position in the air as he just stared dumbly at the redhead, wondering what the hell was up with Sakn.
Wait.Xiu remembered kicking. And kicking hard. He paled and gulped audibly, resisting the urge to cross his own legs. Oops.
“Sakn?” He asked tentatively, voice trembling. The strange air of slowness in his brain cracked and Xiu was finally running to his friend. “Oh gods, Sakn!” Xiu moaned, dropping to his knees beside his fallen companion. “I killed you! Oh, oh! Sakn are you dead? Tell me you’re not dead! I‘m so, so, sorry! I didn't mean to!”
He rambled on along this vein, shaking Sakn’s shoulder until he ran out of things to say. Xiu just sat there then, dumbfounded and not knowing what to do. He’d…just kicked Sakn in the wrong way. He wondered if he should be running now while he still had the chance.

"Hnnn," was all he managed when Xiu fell down next to him, and his face screwed up when the boy began to shake him. Oh gods, his stomach was all kinds of twisted and the rocking motion was not helping him at all! But every time he attempted to tell the boy to stop, Xiu would start rambling again and rocking him.
So for a moment, Sakn was nervous to say anything when Xiu finally stopped. He didn't know what would happen if he attempted to break the silence. The redhead was in no mood to be shaken more. But when it seemed that Xiu was finally done, Sakn took a leap and groaned.
Groaned and then growled, "Imma nawt sure if I should be mad," he managed, sitting up slowly with gritted teeth, "Or proud'a dat," because while Xiu had low blowed him, the boy had shown strength and had definitely thrown some real punches. He rubbed his belly, which would surely have bruises on it tomorrow, and then nodded to himself. He would get Xiu back for the kick later, but for now he would praise the boy(not because he was scared to get kicked there again if he berated the monk, mind you!). "Those wus some fine punches, Xiu."
That kick on the other hand...that kick was never to be mentioned again.
Ever.

When all he got was that moan of pain, Xiu nearly had a panic attack. Oh gods, he’d killed Sakn! Or at least broken the redhead’s brain from the ferocity of his kick to that sensitive place. He vowed to himself to take better care in keeping his temper in check! Master was always telling him it’d get him into trouble and it had. Oh if only--
Sakn was praising him now.
Xiu’s mind paused mind rant and he blinked. He’d actually done…good? Ecstatic, Xiu grinned widely, not knowing what to do with himself as he hover over Sakn, not sure if the boy needed help or not. It was official. He was a real fighter! With Sakn’s training he’d actually managed to go from wimpy to hey-not-bad-manly.
It was Sakn’s last comment that had Xiu bursting with joy. He, the toughest person that Xiu knew, called his punched fine. Xiu’s green eyes lit up and it almost looked like he was going to cry in happiness. Instead, he flung himself at the redhead and hugged him tightly, not caring that they were both hot and sweaty.
“Oh, Sakn! Thank you so much. I thought this would never happen!” Xiu gushed like a goof ball, hanging off Sakn’s neck with no care for the boy's current "wounds". “You’re a wonderful training master Sakn and an even better friend!” He knew cuddles and hugs were off limits but he didn’t care! If anything deserved a hug, it was this. This was his first step to becoming an independent, manly adult! He’d be darned if he let people try to pick on him any more!

At first, Sakn thought that perhaps Xiu would reel in his delight due to the fact that the redhead was on the ground, obviously recovering from some major injuries, and not tackle him.
Oh, how wrong he was. It took all the redhead had to keep himself from crying out as Xiu leaped on him. He bit down hard on the inside of his cheek as Xiu's bony boy knees clashed against his thighs. Usually such actions would be quickly squelched with a quick shove and a punch to the shoulder, but Sakngea was in no position to be pushing, and held back a moan as his monk friend hung around his neck.
He listened, swallowing back all urges to yell(in frustration, not pain!), and then nodded. Nodded because opening his mouth meant speaking, and Sakn wasn't sure that he was quiet ready for that yet. Xiu had jostled him just as he was coming out of the first shock.
After a few more moments where Xiu hung there, Sakn had managed to gain some repose, and not-so-gently-but-not-too-hard shoved the other boy off him before slowly struggling to his feet(which he did on his own, because he would not have his ego ground any farther into the ground then it already was, thank you very much!). After which he leaned on his knees, took a deep breath, and then looked at Xiu through his tousled fiery red hair. "Y'know, tha'feelin'. Th'one y'got when I wus teasin' ya?"
He paused for a moment, standing erect again and fiddling with one of his braids, which had become loose during the tussle. "Tha's the feelin' y'gotta have when y'fight. Y'can't think, can't imagine anythin'cept takin' the other person down. Y'gotta use that feelin'," here was a bit of advice from teacher to student, and Sakn nodded sagely as he spoke, fingers deftly undoing the ruined braid before just as quickly putting it back together.
"Y'understan'? I did awl that for a reason. I'ssa lesson y'gotta learn."
It was the way Sakn knew how to survive. Pure instinct and emotion.

Oblivious to Sakn’s continued pain, Xiu had thought the boy would be over it by now. Sure, Sakn had been hit in a tender spot, but it was Sakn after all. The redhead was the toughest of the tough as far as Xiu was concerned and the idea of his manhood not being as tender as most wasn’t as farfetched as it should have been.
Xiu easily let himself be knocked away though, still smiling like a idiot even as he got shoved back onto his butt into the dirt. To happy to even get angry, he watched Sakn regain himself, watching for whatever the other boy had to say. It was curious to say the least. Sakn was telling him to get angry and be emotional…but, Master Ziye always told him to be careful of his emotions and think things through. This was confusing to say the least and Xiu’s head was c**k as he nodded slowly.
“So,” Xiu drawled, “you planned this?” He flashed a cheeky smile as he stood, tempted the undo Sakn’s braid again. He liked his teeth in his mouth though so refrained, instead brushing off the seat of his pants. “I didn’t know your foresight extended that far.” He teased, making himself give Sakn’s arm the usual friendly punch. Honestly, Xiu thought Sakn's tousled look was kind of...handsome and he'd want to touch all that red hair. He didn't of course. Men only punched.
There was still a playful glint in the student’s eye, but he clearly grew more serious as he took a step back and bowed to Sakn. “Thank you so much for teaching me.” Although they were still friends, Sakn deserved the respect of any teacher who taught a pupil.

Sakn scowled at Xiu when his friend teased him, tossing his braids over his shoulders so he couldn't fidget with them any more, and then stuck his tongue out at the monk boy. He wasn't too upset with the teasing, and supposed that he deserved it as retaliation for teasing Xiu before.
And he couldn't help the grin that spread across his face when Xiu bowed to him; just like how he couldn't stop the tinge of red that coated his cheeks when the boy spoke. It was strange, and pleasant and made the redhead feel proud. So he clapped a hand on Xiu's shoulder as the scrawny honey-haired boy stood from the bow, and pulled his friend against his side in a manly shoulder clasp.
He wasn't quiet certain how to react to the bow, and hoped a friendly hand gesture would be good enough in return.
"I think dat we been workin' hard enough fur today," he stated, walking towards his house with Xiu at his side. While the sparring had been cut short, Sakn felt that it had been a good fight in the end. He wanted to relax now though, and was still feeling slightly achy. Perhaps they could go inside and play a game of checkers. It would be challenging, entertaining and Sakn was certain that he wouldn't get kicked while playing.
Yes. That sounded like a safe, good plan.
And he was pretty certain he could beat Xiu at checkers. Pretty sure.
