Here is a short excerpt from my NaNo story. I just want to see if it catches peoples attention. smile That's why I haven't been on here, busy writing 50,000 words.

“We should’ve skipped school to come when it was less crowded.” Rainy said, pushing her way through clusters of people to get to the line of the closest haunted house.

“Skip school?” Maryalynn looked appalled at such a suggestion. She had never taken a day off school, even when sick. It made Rainy feel like a failure some days for how much she skipped class, but she didn’t take all AP classes like Maryalynn did.

Rainy rolled her eyes. “Live a little.”

They joined the back of the line that wrapped around the pavilion, circled the mini roller coaster for kids, and almost touched the food area. The line bumped up every few seconds, but it would still take them a good hour to make it to the entrance. Several workers were assigned to dress up and wander the lines, scaring people and making them anxious to get to the haunted house.

“I live a lot, thank you very much! I have a full ride scholarship to the best university in the country! What do you have, Rainy?” Maryalynn poked Rainy teasingly, “A sister going to the same university as myself.”

“You know I don’t want to go to college, Mary.” Rainy laughed and poker her back. To the left of Maryalynn’s super curly blonde hair, a skeleton was creeping up. Rainy kept quiet and tried not to give it away in her facial expression that she was going to hear her friend scream like a little kid.

The guy, about their age, crept up and growled deeply in Maryalynn’s ear, making her squeal and turn around, shoving him away from her. People surrounding in the line laughed out hysterically as she started yelling at him for being, in Maryalynn terms, “a very bad word”.

Rainy, still laughing hard, tried to calm Maryalynn down, which was hard when she couldn’t take a deep enough breath to say anything. Finally, she gasped out, “Dude, he’s not a douche for doing his job.”

“I believe he’s a turd for even dressing up and pretending! Halloween is supposed to be fun, not scary!” Maryalynn huffed and folded her arms over her chest angrily.

“You know that if it was the girl in front of us in line you would’ve laughed your head off.” Rainy pointed out as they inched up in the line. “Besides, he was a cute skeleton.”

“What. Ever.” Maryalynn turned away from her, zipping up her jacket, determined to be angry with her for another five minutes.

“Chill. I’m going to go get us some fries, okay?” Without waiting for an answer, Rainy left to go to the nearest concessions booth and buy the biggest thing of steaming fries with the most melted cheese, a Candies favorite. She hummed lightly to the pop song that was trying to play over all the people and moved slowly back to Maryalynn.

Maryalynn smiled when she came back, reached out for a fry, and said, “Thanks Sunny.” She tended to call Rainy that when she was angry or teasing with her, it was after all, her most hated nickname.

“Look,” Rainy said, pointing with her elbow to the skeleton boy who was wandering their way again, “It’s your new friend.”

“Oh, shut up.” Maryalynn snatched the fries from her but laughed. “I dare you to find out his name.”

Rainy raised an eyebrow at her, “Seriously? That’s the best dare you can come up with?”

“Fine then,” Maryalynn shrugged, “I dare you to ask him a minimum of 20 questions while standing in lines for the houses. As a bonus, if you get him to play the game back, then I’ll take you to lunch every day next week.”

Rainy laughed, “No problem-o.”

“Oh, and if you get his number? Lunch for a month, plus I’ll take you to see the new R.J. Knowing movie at midnight.”

“Deal.” Rainy shook hands with her friend and turned just in time to see the skeleton kid coming up to them. “Hello.”

He stopped and looked at her, tipping his top hat at her.

“I’m Rainy, what’s your name?” She asked, sticking out her hand.

He took it in his warm gloved hand. “Markell.”

Before she could ask another question, he whisked off to crouch down by a little boy and wait for him to turn around. When the boy did, starting to cry and clutch to his mom, Rainy laughed loudly.

“It’s so mean!” Maryalynn grumbled.

“It’s frickin’ hilarious Mary!” Rainy exclaimed, grabbing another fry.

Good so far.

I assume that this isn't the beginning of the story. I liked your little bit of foreshadowing with the hint that people were coming in costumes to scare the customers.

You did a good job of distinguishing your characters and I like the polar opposites and almost makes me want to read more to find out how on Earth they're friends. (only almost cause I don't have enough time to be reading so much)

Careful of spelling. You had one error (that I'm too lazy to look for sorry, but you spelt poker instead of poked)

In my opinion I think I was looking for a little more to happen in this section, but I know that it's only a small section of the story and that you can't have all the action bunched in a few areas.

(If you need more words to put in you could probably add a little more to Rainy leaving for the fries. Elbowing past customers dressed as whatevers, handing money to the greasy disgusting volunteer at the booth etc.)

I don't think it's hilarious to make a little kid cry. I remember my trip to a "haunted" house. As a child, not even that little of a child, it was pretty traumatizing. Anyway, you're writing style's pretty good ^^.

Poor little kid...
I still liked your story fragment though.
