I think this is the right place to put this, feel free to move it if it's not.

I don't know if any of you know of my eating problem, Chalda helped me out in another guild but I think that's the only person.

I used to have terrible binge eating and depression (not terrible depression though). The depression comes from my eating problems and is made worse by my IBS ( stare ).

Anyway I still seem to comfort eat ALOT. My weight went up suddenly and it was a big shock to me but it's still slowly creeping up on me. I used to be dead slim so I'm not huge but I will be if I don't sort it out soon. I've been to my doctor twice but I feel I have gone down hill since my last visit. I just seem to think about food all the time. When I'm depressed I just what to eat to. It's like a drug because the food releases endorphes and makes you feel good but once you start feeling bad again so you eat more and before you know if, you're stuffed.

I desperetly want to lose weight but can't until I stop the comfort eating which I just can't seem to do.

You sound a bit like me. Although I don't have depression, I do have anxiety problems, and I also have IBS (never officially diagnosed, but I have a list of the symptoms and my doctor has said it's possible that I have it).

I too tend to eat for comfort, but I usually do it when I'm bored. Late at night, I'm on Gaia, nothing to do, so I go get something to eat. Bad habit to be in, but sometimes I can't help it.

I try to do something that distracts me. If I'm on Gaia and I'm hungry, I'll try to get myself doing something that takes my attention away from my hunger - something like working on a sticky in the guild, posting information, etc. Or I can go up to my room and listen to music, or get ready for bed, or read a book, etc.

I know that's probably not a lot of help, sorry, but it's all I can think of at the moment. whee

I have advice for you, well first my IBS is hell, I have sore stomach apon sore stomach. Blood tests! Stuff I can't remember the name of but it was HELL. I've had gynos having to examine me by putting his finger up there.
Anyway the advice: try to do what you can to prevent it getting worse if you have it. There are many different websites that will give you info on how to keep it under control so you have the least amount of pain as possible.

My problem lol: I've tried distracting myself but when the urge becomes too strong it's hard.

Yeah. eek I HATE car rides and public transit now (buses and a monorail-type system), so I'm doing what I can to deal with it. Part of it is psychologically-based, but the rest might be due to my diet or that I might be partially lactose-intolerant, etc.

I haven't had a blood test to see if I had IBS, just one once to see if I was anemic (I wasn't) - but that's it.

I've been tested vaginally for pap smears and such, but if you meant up the a**s when you said "up there", then no I haven't had that done before. sweatdrop

But yeah - when I take the Skytrain (the mono-trail type system I mentioned), I play my Nintendo DS because it distracts me. I almost always have my cd player going when I'm on a bus. Talking to people distracts me a little. And so on and so on. I know where you're coming from on that one. heart And always, always, if I'm going somewhere (in a car, on a drive, at school), I look for the nearest washroom.... just in case. whee

Anyways, back to your problem. The only thing I can still think of to suggest is to distract yourself so you don't think about food, or remove yourself from a situation so you don't have access to food. I mean if you're on the computer and you get hungry, go to bed instead of getting something to eat. Or, you could try fidning smoething else to replace your hunger cravings. When you get hungry, do something else. Read a book, or go play a sport, watch TV, etc.

I read that this kind of behavior is that you find comfort with food. Becuase your grandma's cookie were allw ways made with love of something like that. So you don't find love in other things except food.

i have the same problem. only i am a compulsive eater. i eat all of the time. and it is mostly for comfort or because of boredom. and i eat when i get depressed too. i hate myself for it. but i am taking control of it. because i notice when i am eating and not hungry then i stop and do something else like draw or write or do homework. its hard but easy to keep yourself occupied.

I'm a compulsive eater as well. I have a couple solutions.

1. Only keep good food around. Stuff like salad, baby carrots, stuff that won't make my look like a hot air balloon. Make sure there is plenty of healthy snack foods like celery. Stuff you don't have to take time to cook. That's my biggest problem, I'm a nibbler.

2. Spaghetti. I get up and get one stick of it dried then just suck on that for a few hours. When it's gone, I get up and get one more stick. It takes a long time to eat if you train yourself not to bite. Keeps the mouth busy.

3. Remove distractions. Rather than doing your shopping once a week and having a couple days where your cupboards and fridge are totally full, try only buying a little at a time. Say go shopping three times a week, but buy much less. That way, you have less in the house at any given time. This one is a bit iffy because some people jsut don't have time, and others get a little greedy when they are in the store. It's hard to control yourself with all that food around. That's why my fiance does all the shopping. I just can't handle being around so much food.
