This is Private RP between Jianyu [Kuro-Mizuki] & Huojin [Kotaline].

Setting:
Cherry Tree Hill.

A somewhat depressed Jianyu is trying to get some peace and quiet. A very curious Huojin is determined to cheer him up.

The top of Cherry Tree Hill was by far Jianyu's favorite place in all of Lunaria. The tree was old, gnarled and worn from its years of use as a resting place for many Lunarians, but it was comfortable; a peaceful place of familiarity and calm, somewhere where Jianyu came to meditate and to think. He had come here many times before, most of it times when his mind had been troubled, or when his heart had been clouded.

Today was no exception. When he had arrived there a few hours previous, the hill had been surrounded by young children playing, laughing and chasing one another. At first it had bothered Jianyu, whose mind was racing with convoluted thoughts, but after a while he had grown used to their laughter, their giggles and shouts. And, within a short time, they had been called home and Jianyu was left alone at the top of the hill.

He leaned his head back against the tree trunk, letting out his breath in a slow sigh. This particular time, he was not quite certain as to why he was so despondent. An accumulation of things, perhaps. His breakup with Bataar, which although was quite long ago by now, still stung once or twice when he least expected it. His parents, whose ages were getting along in years, and his idiotic brother whose elopement with the innkeeper's sister had forced him into a fraternal relationship with the last person he had ever wanted to be related to. Not to mention his blind eye, which was still shot through with pain at night sometimes, causing him to wake up gasping and sweating, the nightmares twisting his thoughts and dreams.

Jianyu ran a hand through his hair, absently letting his fingers sift through the dark locks. When will my heart calm? he wondered, his expression shifting into one of quiet frustration. When will I feel truly happy again, I wonder..?

Sun Qi and Huojin came the Cherry Tree Hill often. Usually children came alone, or their parents watched from a distance, but Qi was shy in public, and he didn't feel comfortable without a family member right next to him. His favourite family member, his grandfather, was too old to climb the hill comfortably, and his parents were too busy, so the task of accompanying Qi inevitably always fell to Huojin, who didn't mind it at all. For starters, Huojin wasn't exactly mature himself, and better still, it gave him a chance to show off his newest inventions to his most appreciative audience. No one reacted to pretty fireworks and loud noises like Lunarian children, and Huojin loved seeing their amazed reactions. Qi treated it like it wasn't any big deal, but children who hadn't grown up in a firecracker making family were plentiful around Cherry Tree Hill, and Qi was soo shy to mind Huojin hogging the spotlight.

Today had been much like any other. Qi and his friends had spent the day playing and Huojin had gotten the praise he'd been looking for, while dusk crept up on them all too soon. Eventually, the children had filtered back home, until it was just Qi and Huojin left, sitting crosslegged on the grass and tracing diagrams in the dirt with their fingers. "It's getting too dark to see," Qi complained.

Huojin frowned at him. "You can think about firecrackers anywhere, little brother."

"But I can't see what you're drawi-"

"Anywhere."

"Please, can we just go home?" Qi begged. "Spirits come out in the dark."

This moved superstitious Huojin more than any other argument would, so he wiped his hand off on his pants and got up. "Okay, you win," he muttered, but in the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something that gave him pause. "You go on."

"Huojin!"

"You have some firecrackers on you, right? I saw you trying to make some last week. If any evil spirits try to stop you, scare them off."

Qi frowned, but he turned on his heel and headed home nonetheless. He knew the way back, so he would be fine, Huojin figured. It wasn't like it was very far. Turning on his heel, he headed for the top of the hill, where a somewhat more distinguished looking Lunarian man was sitting and staring at nothing in particular. The stranger cut an imposing figure, but Huojin was never one to be particularly bothered by that kind of thing, and sat himself down in front of the other without any hesitation.

"So serious, Sir?" he asked cheerfully. "You've been making some awfully thoughtful faces for someone who's been sitting close to playing children."

He had not expected the voice. Jianyu opened his eyes.

"Beg your pardon?" he asked, somewhat confused and startled abruptly from his internal musings. Dragged out from the dregs of his meditating, it took him a few seconds to make out the person talking to him - a young man, perhaps sixteen or seventeen years of age, with light colored hair and large green eyes. He was seated across from Jianyu on the lush grass hill as if he had always been there, a light, cheerful note to his voice as he spoke.

"Er," said Jianyu, somewhat unsure of how to answer. He had never seen this particular Lunarian before, but he did not seem entirely unpleasant. Years of training taught him to be wary of most, if not all, of those he met, but this young man did not seem so intimidating.

However, that did not mean it was safe to do much other than say cautiously "Yes, I am serious. I have much on my mind, I'm afraid, and this is the spot I come to when I wish to clear my thoughts."

Glancing around, Jianyu realized, somewhat belatedly, that the hill was empty now, except for the young man sitting cross-legged across from him. He had thought that he would not have been here long, but the sun was already drawing lower in the sky, streaking the blue with thick bands of orange and red and casting a luminous glow over the rooftops of the houses and establishments of Lunaria. Jianyu's brows drew together in confusion as he turned back to look at the youth.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"Oh!" said Huojin gravely. If it was serious, it was probably about firecrackers. That was just about the only thing he took seriously these days, besides the whole going to war thing (and that was because if he was killed, it would disrupt his plans to take over the family firecracker business). "I find it helpful to explode things when I'm trying to clear my thoughts," he offered generously. "I have some firecrackers, do you want to use them?" Huojin was always carrying some kind of exploding thing on him somewhere, he was a walking fire hazard, which explained his on-again-off-again missing eyebrows. "Of course, I'm never really upset, I mean, not usually or anything. I mean, I guess I was kind of upset when my parents told me I had to go off to the Academy and fight and everything, but that's just life you know? If you live in a country, you've gotta fight for it in a crisis or you're not really a decent citizen. Plus my brother's too young, my dad is arthritic, and my grandpa's too old, so it's just tough luck." He paused to take a deep breath and consider that statement before adding, "Anyway, if I am really upset, explosions are pretty therapeutic. Especially if I make the firecrackers myself, but the noise is the thing, I guess. Kind of like it blows up all the thoughts in my head and helps me focus properly. Maybe it'll help?"

"Sun Huojin," he introduced, sticking out a hand and grinning. "Nosy inventor-in-training. You?"
