I tend to worry about defense and then one main focus of att be it spc att or physical att. I look I tend to not add to much to their best att if it is high enough already. Also I never count the stats on paper or program I usually finish them quick most probably would say this is bad but it usually turns out good.
I tried that back when I was learning about EVs. I started writing down tally marks on notebook when I realize that my pokemon were not getting the full EVs like I thought they were.
As for spreads, I will occationally do the 252/252/6 just because it's easy, but I also tend to go with 240/240/30, or 200/200/110, depending on what I'm training it for.
