Last night I was in VH on my DK. She's blood spec but she's not geared as a tank. So I've been running her as DPS. Well some tank Leggings dropped off of one of the bosses. I rolled need on them and so did the tank. Tank won them. No biggie. Well in all caps the tank starts tearing into me. I flat out said I'm trying to gear as a tank but you won them so chill. Keeps talking in all caps like well if you want to tank I'll let you tank ect, ect. Like dude I'm not geared for it. I got feed up with him and left.

Well it is common courtesy to roll need on DPS gear if you're DPS, and greed if you want gear for other spec.
If you want really tanking gear from dungeons, you should ask if the tank needs a certain tanking piece that dropped, and if they don't need it, then you can roll need. Otherwise it's the tank who is tanking, not you. So he should have the priviledge for all tanking gear that drops.
And you can get good tanking blues for normal dungeons by crafting, so you could be tanking and get all tanking drops you need biggrin

Lol I run into those everyday, funniest was on Sunday we did RS 25, man don't know how many folks dispelled the Firey Combustion in the middle of the on the ranged and healers then in phase two of the fight someone dispell the soul consumption again in the raid, how hard is it to run to the back of the circle

Personally I think you have every right to roll. You might have multiple dps of the same armor type in a run that would roll on the same thing (mage vs warlock vs shadowpriest etc), and a tank shouldn't just assume they get everything simply because there is no need to have 2 tanks in a dungeon run. To be fair I'd have greeded on dps gear and needed on gear for your main spec (assuming tank is going to be your main spec).

I personally feel that it's common courtesy to roll need on w/e spec you are when you're in the instance. I wouldn't roll need against a tank or healer if I'm dps at the time. Likewise, if I'm a tank or healer I wouldn't roll need on dps gear. The only exception is if nobody else needs the gear. In that case I'd ask if anyone has a problem with me needing the gear for off spec. In this case, the tank won the item so he/she should've left it at that.

I understand that side of the issue, but it can be extremely frustrating running a dungeon with an undergeared tank, when many dps might be overgeared and cause threat problems. In that situation it's stressful not only for the tank trying to keep aggro and do his job but for the dps who end up essentially tanking the boss. The dungeon system doesn't always put you with similarly-geared people; every time i go into a dungeon I end up causing the tank to sweat. One of our locks was kicked from a dungeon because he would have had to basically dot up a mob and then go afk to avoid pulling, and the tank didn't like that he was pulling so much threat.
I think healers and tanks are used to instant gratification as far as gear is concerned, since they fill specific roles that are not duplicated in a dungeon and therefore expect no competition.
While gearing my alt shaman, I went resto to get into instances faster. But I never needed on an obvious healer item like a trinket simply because I was the designated healer. If I wanted it for offspec I'd ask, since everyone else was rolling greed.

Having played a resto shaman from 1-80 starting Pre-BC, I have ran into issues like the one that's being discussed. Like most people in here though I agree with the whole MS>OS/common courtesy of asking if you can roll if he/she doesn't need it or want the item. I've had to pass up on a shitload of ele gear because I always heal (my OS is ele) but I don't mind healing and its what I love the most. However I do understand that especially for a tank, it can be difficult trying to muster up some gear without just running in as a tank and getting your s**t pushed in on every pull. xd
I'd also like to touch on what Zornoxx posted in terms of the "instant gratification as far as gear is concerned" for healers and tanks. I've always found it annoying when someone does indeed feel like they deserve the gear because they are a tank or a healer. Being a healer myself, I do understand that in terms of survivability in raids and such...gear is pretty much a standard requirement and needs to get better with each possible moment, but I don't throw a crying fit when I don't get gear either. It's like trying to find that perfect space in the middle where people understand that healers keep you alive as well as tanks and sometimes we need the gear first, and then learning how to be a adult and watch people get gear of they're own and being proud that you helped accomplish that.
I'll stop my ramblings at that. 3nodding
