Couldn't they just seal the cannon and remove the machine guns without removing the turret? The turret is part of the experience.
Then again maybe the reduced weight will save him money on fuel.

They should have just sealed the cannon barrel with cement and left it on.

Two other things come to mind about the one tank.
First, there's a whole lot more room for more passengers without the turret in place. Look at the video and see the 7 or so people standing up.
The second thought, though a longshot, would be that the German government might have some laws regarding working tanks, even with welded barrels. That's just a theory, though.
