it doesn't reaallly bother me
since they were not at all active and i seldom went there
but one would think a thoughtful captain would send a prompt first
or at least an explanation afterwards....

Sometimes guilds clear out all of their members to start again, or kick out people who haven't posted since a certain date. No idea how big the guild was, but if you look at that guild now, it has less than one page of members and says its "being worked on". So I'd guess they kicked out pretty much everyone.
