Jonathan sighed gently as he kept smoking his cigarette, he was still having trouble believing the situation he was in. Stuck in an abandoned town with strange creatures and he was grouped with the most unlikely of people, a young girl, two men who have rarely offered much to say and a supposed agent with the foulest mouth you could ever hear. Well it could be worse, he could've been babysitting a bunch of brats who couldn't tie their shoelaces with out help, better not jinx his luck though. "We better get moving, no doubt another one of those creatures will show up, I'm not in the mood to get bile on my shoes".

User ImagexxNadine Kaslov was of a slender frame, she was short and with platinum blond hair cut with intended messiness. She had piercing gray eyes, and was slow to anger. It didn't take long, though for the fog to get on her nerves. It felt as if she'd been wandering in circles for hours, the fog impeding her progress farther into the town.

xxIt was strange, though. She wasn't entirely sure what she was doing here, but she knew that this was where she needed to be. Why? She couldn't guess, after all, she hadn't seen another soul since she'd arrived to the town, probably hours prior. She stepped back off the sidewalk, and crossed the street to peer into the window of a building labeled "Andy's Books". The store looked untouched by time, every item in place, and not a bit of dust collected.

xxIt was chilling, though, as if the entire town had simply up and disappeared, leaving everything behind them. It seemed impossible, though, that something like this could happen without anyone hearing about it. Nadine couldn't say much for the town, she'd never even heard about it before she'd come.

xxIt was a long walk later that Nadine felt that she needed to get out of the fog. As if the town were already threatening to chip away at her sanity. The fog was infuriating, seeming to dissipate around her only to wall up again only feet ahead, shifting shapelessly but effectively confusing her sense of direction. The first thing that came into sight was a church. She hated churches, but perhaps this one would prove itself a haven away from the emptiness of the town.

xxNadine reluctantly climbed its steps to the massive doors. They were easily pushed open to reveal the innards of the church, dark and smelling sweetly of incense, thick in the air. She didn't close the door, but rather let the natural light, what of it could break the fog, illuminate the first couple steps into the building.

Gratefully accepting Jonathon's cigarette, Max let out a long breath and brought it to her mouth. After rummaging through her pockets for a small packet of matches, she struck one against the side of the cardboard, lighting her cigarette with trembling fingers. She took a long drag and let out a tall line of smoke through her lips before turning back to the man. "Thanks," she sighed, running a hand through her bangs. "You have no idea how much I needed that."

Max hadn't really wanted to ask her earlier question. It had mainly been a means to take up space in the empty air surrounding the aimless group, a means of distraction. Of course, it probably hadn't been the best question to ask; Max had thought it had been the most appropriate, but hearing Jonathon's response made her feel just a small twinge of guilt. Like he needed me to stir up bad memories. This place does that by itself. But his answer did prove her thought behind the statement: that no one was planning on jumping up and scouring the country if he went missing for a few days. Maxwell had no idea exactly how long it might take them to get out of there, but there was always that chance, with creatures like that severed carcass back in the gas station, that some of them would go missing for more than a few days. She nodded to Jonathon's response as he went back to smoking his own cigarette, and started as Riley gave an answer.

"Not for a while, anyway." The girl had taken awhile before answering; she had probably spent some time thinking over people. Max was glad she didn't have the luxury, but after looking at Riley's face she assumed that the girl had less who might question her absence than normal. She wasn't too surprised -- the girl didn't really look like she was too chummy with the local teenage group. Riley's face fell at Jonathon's response, and Max couldn't help but faintly wonder why as she took another quiet drag. She knew how easy it was for family to drop ties, but perhaps it wasn't something the girl was familiar with. Family was thought to have the strongest bond -- blood thicker than water and all that -- but it was seen more and more often, families cutting communication with other members for foolish things like feuds over marriages or money; Max hadn't been around the others long enough to fully understand what Jonathon was talking about, but she guessed that the event was significant enough.

"After long enough, though--" Riley had let the sentence drop feebly and Max picked up on it, the nicotine rush giving her more courage to speak her thoughts aloud. "We don't know how long we'll be here," she pointed out, not meaning to sound like an optimist; it was a true enough statement, however. "Course, it's not like anyone should really be looking for me, either." Scratching her head, she looked up through her lashes, noticing Seamus and Adam already with the rest of the group. Yeah, she had told them she was an agent, and it was technically the truth, but like the rest of them she saw no need to share her life story, and therefore had not told them everything.

Of course, that wasn't going to change right now. "Agent-wise, I'm not exactly kept up on records." After leaning back onto the car hood, Max shook back her red ponytail, wishing she'd had the time to cut it before she'd left. That had been the original plan, but her plan hadn't exactly consisted of a pit stop in Silent Hill. Should've just chopped the s**t off at home, she thought ruefully, looking up into the gray substitute for a sky. Not like anyone would have cared what it looked like. Things like hair and clothes weren't given much thought by Max, at least fashion versus comfort-wise. If it fit and she cold move freely in it, it was fine for her, and she'd always preferred shorter hair. It was Erik who'd liked long. It looks so beautiful, though. I do wish you'd keep it, he'd always say before touching it himself. She hoped the idiot had enough sense to stay at home where he belonged; she hadn't the time nor energy to spend on thoughts on him then.

"Only when the paperwork piles up." Seamus didn't speak much, but Max could recognize his voice easily from the others. She couldn't help but profile the guy as suspicious -- nature of her work. It wasn't that she wanted to look for the bad in people first, it was just that she tended to. After her experiences, it was necessary enough. So far, though, the man had done nothing to hinder the group, so it wasn't as if Max thought of him as a villainous sort, just that he had his own hidden agenda; Max wasn't planning on delving any deeper to figure it out, though. Besides, even if she'd been interested Seamus didn't seem like the type to chat about his life over a cup of tea.

Adam had seemed quiet and almost fidgety after joining the others, and Maxwell couldn't help but think it was her fault. Not that she felt bad or anything -- she got the reaction from most people -- but she distantly hoped she hadn't rubbed the guy the wrong way. He seemed nice enough... kinda cute even. But in a place like this, cute got you killed, and Max secretly hoped the guy would be able to make a temporary one-eighty in his approach to the situation, or he'd be one of the first to go if they ever split up. "So we're pretty much on our own here," she concluded verbally, though the action wasn't really needed. The fact that no one would really be missed after a little while immediately ruled out their strongest option: that backup would come. Max was never an agent to rely on backup -- considering the type of agent she was -- but in a situation like this, it was definitely something she would have cashed in on if she could. Looking around at the stillness of the place only served to make her wonder if backup could even reach the silent hell the people had found themselves in.

Riley made the next obvious point -- that they should get moving. No one had really brought it up, probably because even though they'd picked a destination, truthfully none of them had a clue about what to really do next. Max watched as Riley stood up, attempting to take the reins into her own shaking hands. Seamus followed, and Adam neared as his quiet voice cut the air. "Maybe you should lead us there Sparks... Since you saw the map."

Sighing but standing, the cigarette Jonathan had given her still in the corner of her mouth, Max took it between two fingers and tapped a small pile of ash to the ground. "Well Adam," she said, giving the other a half, grim smile. Instead of walking closer to him, she stepped over to Riley, who still held the folded map in her trembling hands; she didn't want to make him any more uncomfortable. "We're traveling as a group now, and I don't wanna take up lead unless that's alright with the others. I don't have much... experience being a team player." She was used to solo missions in her line of work, but if she knew anything, it was that you got the agreement of your partner before you went and did something. Truthfully, Max felt a little strange picking up the lead, but if she'd been on a mission, she probably would have done what Adam had suggested, without permission. She wasn't sure what exactly was making her ask now; perhaps it was the knowledge that she could easily be helping lead these people into their deaths as well as an escape. It wasn't as if she'd really had any time to make enough of a connection to any of the people, but that didn't change the fact that she'd regret any of their deaths.

Waiting for a response, Max held her half-smile, looking back at Adam. After awhile, she heard Jonathan speak up next to them. "We better get moving, no doubt another one of those creatures will show up, I'm not in the mood to get bile on my shoes."

User ImageEveryone seemed to have made a futile move toward their next destination. It was slow going, though. Seamus looked back down the stretch of road they had come from, though the fog made it unrecognizable. If it weren't for the street signs, there would be no way they could find their way around. Thank God for Riley's map. Seamus looked back at Sparks as she mentioned that she didn't want to take the reins, if no one was comfortable with it. He bit back the comment that was rising. I'd be comfortable with getting a move on before something else comes along.

Seamus shoved his hands purposefully in his pockets, and rummaged for nothing in particular. Average Joe hadn't had any bad habits to lean back on, though now he'd started to wish he'd taken up smoking. He gestured for Sparks to go ahead, figured they'd all done enough talking. Seamus tried to imagine, what had it looked like when he'd last been to Silent Hill? Nothing like this. A sleepy resort town, that was more of a novelty than anything else. He'd spent so much time there, he'd thought he'd be able to recall everything in exact detail, once he saw it again.

But turning back to the gas station, he couldn't remember anything past what he'd just seen inside. Seamus almost couldn't stand the thought of losing his memories of the place to whatever evil had swallowed it up. What had her priest said to him? He could almost imagine him, standing there. Chanting his mantra of forgiveness and love. What would the priest think of him, now? It was hard to imagine that anyone could be a son of the fabulous creator he'd heard so much about, when everyone seemed to be doing such horrible things to each other.

But Seamus had no room to complain, he'd always been at odds with religion. Taking a cynical route, if only because he could. But he wasn't the same person as he had been, then. And it was hard to separate himself from that other Seamus. He pulled himself forcibly from his thoughts, returned his full attention to reality. They were still standing in the parking lot, maybe waiting for someone to make the first move. They'd already elected Sparks to lead them, did everyone have to agree before they could move on?

It would save from stepping on any toes, but by the time they got anything real moved through the "system", there wouldn't be so many voices to say "I". Inwardly, Seamus scolded himself for such thoughts. He wouldn't wish death on any of his comrades, though he had no intentions of getting too attached. They all had their own goals, they had their reasons for being there-- Seamus wouldn't get in the way of theirs, but he couldn't let them interrupt his.

"I have no problem with it." Seamus responded, a little belatedly. He'd been locked up in his own thoughts so long, he wondered if it even applied. Seamus shot a last glance at his surroundings. There were places he would rather die, than here. But this town could serve a better place than most.

User ImageSparks mentioned that she wanted to make sure it was alright with everyone before she took over, and Riley offered only a silent nod as Sparks stepped over to her and addressed Adam. Seamus was staying rather quiet, looking about him as if he were surprised to see the place in the shape it was. Weird. It wasn't as if he hadn't been there. Riley tucked the folded map back into her bag and crossed her arms loosely.

Honestly, she just wished they would get moving. The fog shifted feet in front of them, making anything more than a yard or so away completely shrouded. If something were quiet enough, it could sneak up on them. They didn't know that they could count on the static of the radio. They didn't even know whether or not there were more of those things. Or different ones. She didn't much like the thought of that. Three of them completely weaponless, the other two armed-- and seemed trained. Hadn't Jonathan said he was military? Conditioned to fight people, not monsters.

It was unnerving. Why would her parents pick this as their meeting place? Riley didn't dare think that they were hurt, maybe by similar monsters. Maybe even the same one. Surely, they hadn't known that this place would be this way. Hadn't the brochure said this was a vacationing town? Some kind of a resort, or something. A tourist trap. Surely, it was supposed to be like a little family vacation. Maybe they hadn't even come yet. Maybe they'd been held up. Riley's parents had always been a little stingy, maybe they'd opted out of a plane trip. Especially after buying her ticket.

They'd probably driven, and gotten caught up in traffic. It definitely wasn't impossible. The whole atmosphere made it hard to be optimistic, but Riley was determined not to be let down. Her parents were here, and were safe-- or they weren't here at all. Either way, she would find them, as planned. They would have a tearful reunion, and then they'd go home. Hell, she wouldn't even pack her things, she'd leave them where they were. She didn't care. They meant nothing to her. They'd become things of a past life. Unimportant.

She'd quit her job. She wouldn't move back home, but she'd live nearby. The little story she'd made up in her head, it didn't lift the fog any, but it'd made the time spent waiting for them to figure themselves out a little more bearable.

[OOC: Could I ask you guys to just drag Riley behind you? I can't think of a way to get rid of her, and I don't want to kill her yet. If you don't want to, I'll think of something. I shouldn't be gone a whole lot longer.]

Jonathan sighed deeply as he got off the car hood and stretched his legs before checking he had everything, he had his cigarettes, his brand new blood smeared fire axe and his trusty firearm with enough power to shatter someone's skull and blow their brains out of the back of their head at the same time. Plus the girl Sparks was there and she seemed like a pretty capable fighter so they still had a remote chance of survival and escaping this misty freak infested hell hole. "When we get out of here, I'm definitely buying you guys a pint of beer or something".

Hearing Seamus' response was enough for Max. "Well, I suppose we shouldn't waste anymore time then. Off we go," she spoke briskly, taking one more long drag before dropping her cigarette to the ground and smashing it with her shoe. She had only really been concern with his response after all, though she shouldn't have expected any less. Jonathan and her were the only ones with firearms, and what appeared to be experience; they all probably felt the same way he did.

As for Adam... He's probably just glad to have come to a decision, and I'm sure Johnny doesn't mind the help, she thought to herself, walking forward with her gun replacing the lost cigarette in her hands. She'd had experience with people like Adam: the quiet ones who found her unnerving. Perhaps there was a mystery hidden beneath that silence -- mystery tended to work that way, especially here -- but for now he seemed like another faithful follower, hoping to stay safe as long as he was with the stronger leaders.

Max didn't like to think of herself as a leader of anyone but herself, but now was hardly the time for modesty or self-centeredness. It was time to lead, like it or not, and that's was what she planned on doing. Despite her lack of teamwork on the field, Max knew an escort job when she was handed one, and although this one hadn't quite been handed to her, she was going to do her best at it and help these people get to where they needed to be, herself included.

Truth was, she hated people relying on her because she hated letting people down. Not that she failed often, but there was always that chance, always that situation that turns sour...

"Dad!"

A flash of blonde hair hit Max's vision, causing her to blink rapidly before realizing it was only Riley; she shook herself and the voice was sent to the recesses of her mind. This was hardly the place to be thinking of such cruelty right now.

Other than noting Seamus' distracted demeanor, Maxwell tried to focus on the task at hand; Seamus and Jonathan looked ready to leave, while Riley looked verbally unresponsive at the moment. No lighthearted traveling conversation, then. This was fine with Max -- she was used to working silently. Giving the blonde girl a gentle pat on the shoulder and nodding to the quiet Adam, Maxwell moved forward, following the mental directions she'd retrieved from Riley's map.

Still, the silence of the road ahead was practically surreal, and even managed to cut into the agent's usually hardened attitude. Max's ears prickled as she listened to Jonathan's lone comment, laughing aloud and startling even herself. Turning to the man, she gave him a rare good-natured smile. "Ya know, Jonathan... I might just have to take you up on that."
