As we all probably know, its damn near impossible to go without a cellphone these day. You're always tied into the system...

I was wondering which cellphone would be the best to have for when we must "flee" or escape.
Personally I have a cheap verizon cell, and an ipod touch, and while I love the ipod(hate the prepay vzw cell), I know I am trapped within a company, and confined to their will. Not to mention, with my ipod, theres not unlocked wifi wherever I go.

I'm not a hacker. I don't know HOW to jailbreak my ipod, or make my current cell super amazing and do anything.

I was thinking of getting a samsung intercept(virgin mobile helps the homeless, and that cell has a compostable plastic shell!)
BUT i was wondering, since you all already have had your minds open, which cell OS is the most free from oppression?
Which one also uses wifi(when the apocolypse happens, cell towers will NOT work, I can basically guarenttee that, and in europe, wifi is available in abundance)

Also, if the gov't decides to round up those of us whom are "free" they could track us via our cellphones. We can still connect if need be without having the tower signal on.

Also, am i the only one whom clings to my cell at night in fear that someone will sneak in and mess with it(ie tracking devices or whatever?) Or am I just RIDICULOUSLY parinoid?

So input, thoughts?
How can I still be connected and be relatively free?

Cellphones are already built with the capability of people being able to tap into it and listen to whats going on, even if your not using it. The only way to stop them from listening in is to take out the battery. Not that anyone has any reason to listen into you though. But every time you make a call it's recorded and scanned by a computer for key words and phrases.

I would go with a local cellphone company. Most of us only need to talk to our friends who live in the same city or area, so having a phone that can call out of state/country isn't a necessity. But not all locations provide such small companies and I only know of 3. In Vancouver there is Fido, it only provides service to the Vancouver area. In central California there is Cricket, and then the larger range MetroPCS. So see if your area has a really small service provider. I'm sure they would have to cooperate and hand over your information if it ever came to that, but that's one extra step compared to the big cellphone companies who practically work with them.

Also, don't get a phone with GPS. Droid/Ipod and many other phones these days have GPS. That's the worst thing you could have on your phone if you're worried about this type of thing.

Personally, I'd go for a hard line old fashioned telephone to use in emergencies. As for internet ... damn I just spent a good 45mins trying to find the peer to peer internet service name that people are trying to make to by-pass ISPs... Can't find it sorry. I gotta go.

If they want to intercept your cellular communications they'll do it. It's all just microwave radiation anyway. Unless it's encrypted it's not much different than tapping into enemy radio communications. They don't even need GPS to track you; they can use tower triangulation.

This said, I'm not an expert on cell phones and I really don't worry that much about it since I don't use my cell phone that often.

But even the old primitive cellphones haven't GPS things in them.

I guess if one is in a situation where they can't be tracked they should suck it up and get a cheap prepay cell or nintendo DS and Acekard(or other flash kart) or go off the grid. :[

But that is scary knowing that all voice calls are recorded! D:
Im taking it google voice and Skype arethe same way?(on a normal basis, not like if your just being tapped).

I must note, I have no big reason to be surveilled, I don't break the law or anything(well jaywalking on occasion, but you know what I mean)

If I had to flee, I would

1. Keep a spare license plate handy
2. Withdraw money from my bank account
3. Drive up north. In Canada, they will not extradite you if you committed a capital offence and they will not extradite draft dodgers.
4. Toss the cell phone
5. Do not use any card or check. They can track that
6. Do your very best not to get pulled over. If you get pulled over, it's over
7. Do not travel by air. It is the most secure mode of transportation. You need ID to even get on a plane and if you're wanted, TSA will call the cops
8. Do not bring any weapon with you. That will cause too much attention
9. When at the border, it's best to research where the least secure border is
10. If you are wanted and have pictures posted on the wall, then change your appearance. Cut your hair, gain or lose weight and cloak your face, Sunglasses work wonders, so will hats.

Great points! of course, if you wear boots, you could put a knife in a holster or whatever strapped to your leg as a means of safety(only if you know how to use it!!!)

Also, to elaborate, avoid governmental buildings of ANY kind... And stay in the cities... You'll be more easily lost amongst the crowds, if anything, among tourists. smile

Understand that if you are pulled over once, then it is over and the only thing having a knife will do is get you killed more quickly.

True, but if its hidden in your boot where no one can see it. :/

But as a side note, would getting killed on the spot be more pleasant than getting arrested by gov't agents and going gawd knows where?

I'm trying to prove a point, not argue with you.

It's actually not hard at all to go without a cell phone. Once the contract on mine is up, i'm done with it.

Also, if you get pulled over with a knife in your boot, don't think they wont find it. If they're cuffing you, they'll search you and find it.

Oh christ. If you get arrested, boots will do you no good. Do you understand that? All that will get you is a bullet to the chest.
