Does anyone find it a little "funny" that the medicines that are supposed to "help" us, are often filled with all sorts of nasty things, becoming helpers in the short term, but "soft kills" in the long term?
I noticed this today while taking some cough & cold Nyquil, and also a while before when I wanted to use it to sleep. (I used to use it often for sleep, until I read the actual non-active ingredients,)

Inactive Ingredients: Acesulfame potassium, carboxymethylcellulose sodium, citric acid, FD&C Red No. 40, flavor, high fructose corn syrup, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, purified water, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate

Pretty much the worst things you can put into your body all at once. Mine, for some reason doesn't have benzoate - or I didn't notice, or I wouldn't have taken a dose. May be because it's an off-brand. (I wouldn't have taken it normally, but geez, I felt like s**t, and my teas were helping only so much.)

It's crazy how with all of these additives people give it to their children to take it instead of a pill form.

I thought it was worth posting since although it might help in the short term, it has a s**t ton of "soft kills", and there doesn't seem to be any movement to make better or more natural cold medicines for children or people who don't wish to take pills.

I find it really strange that antifreeze would be in cough syrup.

EDIT: Researching it further, they use propylene glycol in certain antifreeze applications because it's non-toxic. You apparently have to consume a lot of it to be harmed. "It would be nearly impossible to reach toxic levels by consuming foods or supplements, which contain at most 1 g/kg of PG."

I'm not going to research the other ingredients; I was just curious as to why antifreeze would be in cough syrup. sweatdrop

Propylene Glycol is in a lot of packaged foods, if you look long enough. I see it often in ice creams, and I think whipped cream too. I never knew it was used as anti freeze though. Wow.

I know they say it'd take "a lot" to be harmful, but wouldn't the stuff build up just as mercury or transfats do in the body, eventually?
Edit: Guess not? "As with many additives, little long-term testing has been done. PGA does not accumulate in the body, which is mildly reassuring, but there is some evidence that it inhibits the absorption of whatever nutrients happen to be in the food product it's mixed in with. On the positive side, it also inhibits the absorption of strontium, one of the more toxic components of nuclear fallout ... something to keep in mind if you ever do menu planning the day after the Big One drops."

From Answers.com:
"Propylene Glycol is a type of antifreeze. It is used in Ice cream to pevent ice crystals from forming during transport from freezer to freezer. It is also used as a bowel preperation before surgery. So if you are constipated have a pint of ice cream. "

Lol, "have a pint of icecream for constipation." xP

Yeah, propylene glycol breaks down into various non-harmful things in the body from what I read earlier.

"The acute oral toxicity of propylene glycol is very low, and large quantities are required to cause perceptible health damage in humans; propylene glycol is metabolized in the human body into pyruvic acid (a normal part of the glucose-metabolism process, readily converted to energy), acetic acid (handled by ethanol-metabolism), lactic acid (a normal acid generally abundant during digestion), and propionaldehyde."

Source is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol; same for the quote I used in my first post.

I think it should be noted though that just about everything is harmful to you if you ingest too much of it.
