Vayn’s apprehension worried Merle. He didn’t want to go be in trouble after only five minutes on deck after all. Still though, he followed the esper while giving a little prayer to the gods that he would survive his three day journey. Vela seemed honorable enough, but so had his drunkard captain from earlier. People were deceiving and Merle wasn’t about to get comfy just yet.
“I should hope not.” Merle replied, ducking beneath the flap and getting a good look about the room. It almost looked as if a man should have live in the space and not a woman. His glance flickered to the small bed and too the chest as he nodded his understanding. He wondered what was in the chest that was so important that Vela would take it with her. It’s not like he would be able to get anywhere with the stolen goods.
“I just need some hammers and such.” He explained, not going further into detail. It was hard to explain tools to a person who didn’t know anything about them. “I won’t take long.” Deliberately obvious, Merle carefully sorted through all the items, not displacing anything too much as he gathered what he needed. Arms now full he smiled a bit at Vayn. “Alright, I’m good to go. Let’s go fix the hull.” It would be nice to have someone to talk to while working.

Vayn nodded and trotted over to the side of the ship. As he went, he looked up at the sails to make sure they were still blowing in the right direction- as long as Vela had Vayn around, they never had to worry about blowing off course. "So what's your story, kid?" he asked conversationally. "i'm sure Vela's going to worm it out of you on guard duty tonight, or at least try, but I'd like to get it firsthand. She, uh, tends to exaggerate retellings." It was a useful habit for a pirate to have if they wanted their name to be feared across the sea, but it wasn't so useful when someone else needed to know the straight truth of a story. Vayn was better at the truth than Vela was, and he tended to try to get it whenever possible.
"I mean, I don't wanna be rude, but I figure so long as my pactmaker's gonna jump off a ship for you, you might as well tell me to kill some time, right?"
