Name: Vela Age: 22 Occupation: Pirate Captain Race: Hylian Esper: Wind's Requiem Hometown: Windfall Island
Personality:
Narratively Inclined Vela was raised on stories and sea myths, so though she tends to be clever and handy, she also has a very narrative way of thinking about the world. She romanticizes things, placing more importance on the things that remind her of stories than they really deserve, and she anthropomorphizes a lot of the natural forces in the world, like the wind and sea. This helps her memorize things and remember events, but she remembers them less precisely, and often her version of a story will be skewed or overblown. It also leads her to be slightly superstitious and slower to accept things she can't place within a narrative. She also sometimes makes choices because of her sense of narrative, and it impacts how she sees herself and her life. Sometimes this leads to bad decisions, or can influence major choices in her life, like how she opted to become a pirate rather than a windmill repairperson like her father, grandmother, and great grandfather, because the story of Vela the Pirate was more narratively compelling than the story of Vela the Windmill Fixer. She leans towards the romantic and it can sometimes be troublesome.
Scheming Vela's devious. She tries to get the most real looking effect when she and Vayn, the starchid she's bonded to, play dead to get out of a fight, and she always calibrates her weapons to make sure they'll fly just right when the wind changes. She's careful to always know which direction the wind is blowing in, something she helps monitor by tying bells into her hair so she can hear it shift. She keeps tabs on everything on the ship to make sure it's running smoothly, more out of habit than anything else. She also makes sure that when her crew steals in a port town, it's under the cover of darkness, in secret so they don't get kicked out before they're ready to set sail again. She realizes her crew isn't strong or even very big, so she prefers to keep their illegal activities off the open sea covert. This requires a lot of her planning, and this is where this trait really comes in handy for her.
Obstinate Once she gets an opinion on something, Vela sticks to it. She's incredibly stubborn and takes things to heart. Though she's sociable and chatty, it's easy to raise her hackles over something, and she's rarely the first to back down. She can overreact, and that can cause her to make rash decisions or get into silly rivalries, as well as make her lose face if she picks a fight she can't win. She's competitive too, and when she sees someone doing something she's good at, she doesn't like to leave them alone to keep on doing it. She needs to reaffirm that she's better than them, even if it takes many tries to beat them. Sometimes her moods can be as harmless as a little embarrassed grumping to a friend, but other times she'll challenge the other person right there and then, regardless of what else she has to do.
Sociable Vela likes to talk to everyone, and for a pirate she's really quite outgoing. She likes interfering in other peoples' business and being in the know, and she's a bit of a gossipy chatterbox herself. She just can't leave well enough alone when she's in the company of others, which sometimes puts her out of her way and into situations she could have avoided easily had she just kept her nose out. Because of this trait and the fact that she's a very opinionated person, she also gets into arguments with people a lot, but she enjoys arguing and fighting as well. More than the content of the interaction, Vela is one of the people who appreciate the life-affirming value of the interaction itself. However, she also gets lonely and frustrated when she doesn't have anyone to talk to, and as much as she's clever and intelligent, Vela really relies on other people to do a lot of things for her that she doesn't know how to or just doesn't have time to do. Even her fighting technique requires Vayn's help. Vela doesn't just like people, she needs people to interact with, both for her sanity and productivity as an individual. She's far from being independent, which is one of the reasons she chose to live life on the high seas- she'd always have her crew as company.
Clever As the daughter of a windmill repairman and whirligig maker, Vela knows a thing or two about building things that manipulate the wind. She uses her know-how in what she makes for battle, making up for her lack of physical strength against most other pirates with gadgets which will increase her agility and hit targets from afar. She makes whirligigs and kites that will fly over to an enemy and drop things on them, small gliders with sharp points on the tip that can sometimes be dipped in something nasty, and, if worst comes to worst and she has to fight close combat, bladed pinwheels that spin in the wind. To get farther out of the line of fire in combat, she also has a device that can be used as a bit of a glider, but it's only really useful when there are strong winds, and it's dangerous to use out at sea, where she won't know if she can reach her ship again. She uses Vayn to help steer her attacks, changing the wind's direction to suit her in a fight. Apart from her self-made wind weaponry though, she's also clever in a scrape, and can worm her way out of tight spots, or, if that fails, take after Vayn and play dead. She's good at problem solving, so long as the solution can be drawn from her base of knowledge. She's not very good at improvising if it requires a solution she's never had experience with or seen done before, in fact, if she's in a completely new situation, more often than not she'll be terrible at it. This is one of the reasons she's never lived on the mainland, since most of her life has been spent climbing the windmill and playing in the sea, and she's actually not good at much that doesn't involve those things from her past. So though she's clever, she's not original, and she rarely steps out of her sphere of experience.
History:
Vela's family has lived on Windfall Island repairing the windmill for three generations. Vela is the fourth generation, and she's grown up following her father in his workshop or staring at the sea from between the windmill blades. A savvy and spritely girl, she got around town in her youth, and could often be found talking to some of the more friendly of the many Gerudo pirates who inhabit the island. With the whole island to explore, she had a pretty adventurous childhood. When she wasn't exploring or talking to sailors, her father taught her about the wind while she watched him fix the windmill. He told her about the different types of wind, and how some seasoned sailors could predict the wind to some extent. He showed her how anemometers worked and taught her different ways that the wind could be used to help make things work, the windmill included, and he taught her how to figure out her own ways to manipulate windpower. The importance of the ocean and wind were hammered into Vela all throughout her childhood, and when she made a pact with Vayn, though people on the mainland might have found his power to change the wind's direction to be weak, she didn't regret it at all. She knew how to work with Vayn to her advantage, and after she joined him, she began seriously considering a career as a sailor rather than another windmill repairperson like her father. She had learned a lot, but after all those years of listening to the Gerudo women and playing at adventures, she didn't feel like she could just watch the world go by from behind swaying windmill blades any longer. With Vayn on her side, though she wasn't strong, she would be able to make a go of combat, and she knew other girls on the island who she trusted. Vela decided to become a pirate like the Gerudo women, since that was what she had most experience hearing about, and she was never one for stepping out of her comfort zone, and gathered a small crew to set sail. She's determined to live her life on her own terms, but remembers her roots through the wind markings on both her shoulders and the bells in her hair that ring with the changing breeze. Her pirate crew is small, so they have to rely on stealth, planning, and luck for a lot of their victories. However, they use the element of surprise effectively, and though they're pushover pirates when it comes to being threatening (something some blame on having a Hylian captain as opposed to a Gerudo), thanks to their plots and machinations they make a living at what they do.

heart format stolen from Oooka with love! smile
❤❤❤❤❤ watch out, sailor. ❤❤❤❤❤ them's fightin' words. ❤❤❤❤❤ don't you have some other island to sail to? ❤❤❤❤❤ 'hoy there sailor! ❤❤❤❤❤ dock at my port anytime. ❤❤❤❤❤ consider yourself a crewmate. ❤❤❤❤❤ a crew of two, you and me, that is what I want to be. ♥
vayn ❤❤❤❤❤
vayn is pretty much a brother figure to vela by now. she made a pact with him when she was fourteen, and they've been inseparable since then. vayn is often the more cautious of the two, and pulls vela back from hurrying into mistakes that she might regret, but once vela gets going on an idea, she's hard to stop. plenty of times they've had to play dead to get out of a situation, and plenty of times they've been in tough scrapes, but they're always together, through thick and thin.
