Bestiary

On the island where wyverns dwell, there are many plant and animal species that live alongside the small lizards. Here you can find information about all creatures of the island, the wyverns, their predators, and their prey.

Welcome to your Wyvern.

This is a wyvern.

Wyverns are very tiny creatures. They are small enough to sit on your hand, and are full of a soft, squishy tissue that makes them look heavier than they are. Dark blinky eyes are good at seeing in both daylight and moonlit nights, and little thumb claws allow wyverns to climb up many surfaces as easily as walking. Wyvern flight resembles the fluttering of bats, or the small swooping glide of songbirds.

The little creatures are very social, and very vocal. They naturally congregate into flights that live together. These flights gather around singular individuals of strong charisma, and are bound by the respect for this individual and their leadership. Squabbles may occur, but it is exceedingly rare for wyverns to leave their flights because of it. They have many natural predators, and they find safety in numbers.

Fighting is a very fast and simple affair between wyverns. Usually composed of a series of aggressive signals like hissing, wing lifting, tail thrashing, and a wide variety of vocal cues, wyverns will spend most of their time trying to convince each other that they are the strongest. The fight itself lasts only seconds, one decisive lunge and the loser will back off.

Flights of wyverns may coexist in the form of a territory, which further helps them manage their resources and repel dangerous predators. Wyverns will fight to defend the borders of their territory, but are also quick to change allegiance when borderlines shift and their cavern becomes a part of the neighboring territory.

Watch out for these!

Predators are important in every ecosystem, the island included. Many see wyverns as small, tasty treats that are to be eagerly devoured when caught. Some predators are more dangerous than others. When venturing out alone, wyverns are to avoid these predators at all costs!

Larkhon - A bulbous, snake-like creature with a large toothy mouth. Although it can be sluggish at times, it can easily swallow a wyvern whole if taken by surprise. They are most commonly found in the Sleepy Marsh and surrounding areas. Eggs are not edible.

Behir - Crocodillian in appearance, with jewelled hides and several sets of legs that sprout throughout their lifetime. Newly hatched behir are wyvern-sized and not much of a risk, but adults are capable of taking on a small flight and causing great casualties. Eggs are large and tasty, but often safely guarded. Primarily found around the Costal Reefs and Silver Beach areas.

Tawny Raptor - These large birds of prey are found widely throughout the scrublands and plains, venturing northwards as far as the Deepwood. With their keen eyes and swift dive, Tawns are quick to catch single wyverns unawares. They are easily recognized by their size, three times that of a wyvern, and their tan flecked feathers.

Silver Raptor - The northern cousin to the Tawns, Sils are much larger and inhabit the mountainous regions. These birds will not be deterred by the presence of an entire flight of wyverns, the best defense is detection, and avoidance.

Wyrms - Rumored to be long-ago related to wyverns, these cave-dwellers slither through their underground tunnels with the aid of their long body and stubby front legs. They will pilfer eggs from wyvern caverns that extend too deeply into the ground, and with their curved teeth and superior nighttime senses they can easily overpower a like-sized wyvern in the dark. Their presence can be identified by a musty, moldy odour, which can linger quite strongly in frequented tunnels.

Pards - Felines which prey on wyverns can be found throughout the island save for the sand wastes. Their colouration and size varies greatly, but all are fast and capable of great leaps. They are quick to target an escaping wyvern's wings, and care must be taken to avoid their keen senses.

Pit Gore - Giant creatures that live under the shifting sands of the Wastes, which occasionally rise up to engulf entire flights of wyverns. Not much is known about these creatures, most times their presence is merely felt through a deep rumble underfoot.

Creeper Mold - Similar in appearance to the common slime mold found in the Cloud Forest and Southwood, this creature slowly oozes across the undergrowth and keeps to shady locales. It is attracted to signs of dense wyvern habitation, where if unchecked it will parasitize eggs and vulnerable wyverns. Although near impossible to kill, it can be repelled by certain bitter plants.

Unicorns - Although usually mild mannered and gentle, these antelope-like quadrupeds will occasionally spawn a creature of complete genetic instability. Rogues would be indistinguishable from the normal type but for telltale behavioral signs such as the inability to travel in a group. These lone unicorns have been known to hunt down and trample smaller species, and rage so berserk as to drive fully grown pards away from their kills, so it might feast on the carcass instead.

Yeth Hounds - Sometimes attributed to one's imagination flying wild, yeth hounds are dark, solitary shapes in the night. Stories tell of a headless canine creature, larger than the largest pard, who roams at night wailing with a score of unearthy voices, and leaves behind carcasses who's bones are scarred with bite marks that change and reform like mist.

Greater Ornithid - These reptilian creatures are intelligent, speedy predators that can easily snatch up a wyvern in their jaws. Greater Ornithids, like their smaller, more edible cousins, run upright like birds so their front claws are available for manipulating items and grabbing prey for a potentially poisonous bite. The safest escape from this predator is flight, long before it is able to catch up.

Sumpitan - While wyverns are capable of floating and an awkward splashing paddle, fish and wyverns rarely cross paths, beyond a few minnows snatched from shallow areas. The reason for this is the lurking Sumpitan. This large, narrow fish is an excellent archer, easily able to shoot a blast of water capable of knocking an unwary wyvern out of the air. They are limited in their habitat, found mostly in the Sleepy Marsh, the Cloud Forrest pond, and the Narrow Lake.

You may eat these!

Although wyverns prize fruit above all other foods available on the island, they are omnivorous by nature and will consume a variety of meats to supplement their diet when necessary. Their prey of choice are generally species smaller than themselves, but they will help themselves to the fresh kill from a larger carnivore if safety permits.

Insects - Butterflies and crickets are a favourite toy-food of young wyvlets, but worms, grubs, and beetles tend to be more commonly available. In the Wastes, nocturnal chitinous insects are a staple. Certain caterpillars are inedible and can harm a young wyvern with their poisonous quills, and wasps, biting ants, and centipedes are to be avoided altogether.

Birds - Eggs from any species are edible, as are newly hatched and mostly helpless offspring. Small, plains-dwelling groundbirds and migratory songbirds may also become prey.

Amphibians - Salamanders and toads are easy to catch and tender to eat, as are their aquatic eggs. These are often found in damp areas, such as rivers, lakeshores, the marshlands, and the Cloud Forest. Brightly coloured species are warned against, although older wyverns may learn to differentiate between dangerous amphibians and mimics.

Reptiles - Eggs are easiest for wyverns to prey on, as even small snakes and ornithids can carry poison in their fangs or talons. Small lizards can be hunted by individual wyverns, and these are an important meat-staple in locales like the gorge and wastes where fruit is scarce.

Rodents - Mice are perhaps the most commonly preyed on animal, as varieties can be found throughout the island. Young ground squirrels and rats may also be targetted by larger wyverns or hunting groups, but these can easily injure a wyvern with their teeth if cornered.
