Okay, so last night I went through the notes of TBB: Rare Edition and made some conclusions and tried to figure some stuff out. I'm not going to post all of my notes because that would take for ever and I'm lazy. I'm just going to start with one of my observations and go from there.
Okay, here goes: The Baudelaire parents met with an ill-mannered person shortly before their demise (notations for pp. 12-13). They drank brandy and he or she did not use a coaster. There was a bench taken from the burned down (notation p. 18 ) Royal Gardens which was moved to the lobby of a hotel. It is suggested that the same ill-mannered person sat there at the hotel, leaving behind a ring from not using a coaster. My speculation is that the hotel in question is the Denoument. Therefore, whoever sat on that bench met with the Baudelaire parents just before the fire. Now here's where you all come in: Does anyone remember if TPP specifically mentions someone sitting on a bench in the hotel lobby, perhaps even drinking something? If so, I'd like to hear about it.

This is going to be my second observation:
The Baudelaire parents encouraged their children to leave for the beach for they had pressing buisiness to attend (notation for p.2). The footnotes also mention that the Baudelaire table was often used for unfurling maps and tracing photographs (notation p.6). I deduce, from this, that they often hosted VFD meetings and one such meeting was going to occur that day in TBB. Perhaps with members from the opposing side in the schism, hence the presence of the non-coster using person.

Okay, this'll be my last addition to this thread until some disscusion pops up. I'm just going to list some definate facts from the notes in the Rare Edition. If you want to know the page number I'm pulling this stuff from, just ask. But I assure you, it's in there.
1) Lemony Snicket has been in the Baudelaire mansion (and not in a sneaking sort of way, he had drinks while he was there) 2) Two people were looking into the Baudeliare's room the night that Count Olaf hit Klaus. 3) The wood the children chopped did serve a purpose involving a fire survivor and orphaned children. 4)Violet will visit Briney Beach a third time 5) A poisonous plant was removed from the Royal Gardens prior to their destruction (Meusoid Mycellium?) 6) At least one of the eyes in Olaf's home hid a camera that watched the children. 7) The Lion on Olaf's wall was a trained Lion (probably VFD) 8 ) Mr Poe had something hidden in his hat when he met up with the children at Briney Beach. 9) Any survivor of a recent fire would have been hiding in either the Fickle Fountain or the Fountain of Victorious Finance (Quigley).

Mara Mylenne Does anyone remember if TPP specifically mentions someone sitting on a bench in the hotel lobby, perhaps even drinking something? If so, I'd like to hear about it. It mentions towards the end (*will get the exact page*) that someone staying there (at the time of the meeting) had left a ring from not using a coaster, perhaps the same person?

Here tis..
pg. 292... "and as the Baudelaires peeked around the lobby, they saw that another person was missing too, for there was no one on the wooden bench, only a few etched rings from people wicked enough to set down glasses without coasters."
Hope that helps. 3nodding

Mara Mylenne 4)Violet will visit Briney Beach a third time I thought snicket was just questioning whether or not she had been there, and that he didn't know for sure because he was having a scientist check it out. *goes back to read again*
