I bought this about three years ago. I wanted to sand it down, stain it dark/black and have silver leafing on the edges (what's gold now). Obviously haven't done anything to it, but now I have a large garage to do the work in. We're also selling our house, and it's an eye sore as is, so I'd like to do something with it.

It was a radio cabinet. It is now a cat napper and cat toy basket holder.

Suggestions? Ideas what to replace the horrid animal print with?

I think it'd look sexier if you left it unpainted and accentuate the wood itself, like those old radios back then.

To remove the paint... I think sanding's the only way to go. Or painting over it.

Sorry I couldn't provide much constructive info :/

Ooh. That is very pretty.

My suggestion would be:

Lightly sand it down, prime it and paint it black or some other dark neutral sort of colour.

Replace the leopard print with--if it's glass use a glass pain and paint over it. Do the same for the lower cabinet.

Then silver leaf the edges. Then replace the hardware so it matches.

Problem is, I don't really like the old radios. Paul Reilly except is a good example. Though, once sanded, it could look good with some varnish. Not sure. I love "originals" but I'm not a big fan of wood. We have so much already and it's mismatched.

Once (if) I get it sanded, in about a month, I'll post pictures again. Right now it's just hard to imagine it without tacky pink.

In a case like this where it looks like you're dealing with a varnish/stain. You might want to forgo the sanding and just use a varnish stripping agent. It's a lot easier to use and you don't risk damaging the grain of the wood.

I'll probably go this route.

We've got the house up and running to sell (re: no more renovations/clean up/running around) so I hope to start of this soon. I'll post pictures of the process.
