So this is a really random, very hypothetical question, just to answer if you want and stir up a little excitement in here.
Lets say that you have gone on a trip and have plans to scale a mountain. Before you start up this mountain, you pass (just do the trail setup) a small but well loved shrine/temple/altar/what-have-you for a spirit/god/entity of the mountain. Normal custom has people offering in the very least prayers before going onwards. By some stroke of luck/strangeness this custom has been followed by people of varies backgrounds, locals and out of towners alike. Nothing stops you from continuing on your way, however you can't not notice what is there.
The question is, would you offer anything at the place? And I mean anything, from a prayer to offerings that are provided, down to maybe just helping someone at the area. Would you feel comfortable to do this, uncomfortable maybe? Would you do it to not rock the boat in the area you are at, or would you simply continue up the mountain. Nothing is stopping you remember. Would you offer what ever it is to the entity of the mountain, or one that you follow yourself?
Don't feel obliged to answer of course, this is all for fun really. Its just a strange thought, don't make too much of it. I just hope I haven't made a fool of myself posting this. I don't know how realistic this is, but sometimes its fun to imagine.

This is a respect issue. I would be respectful enough to leave a nice offering. Whatever is acceptable for that shrine.

I agree. Paying respects to who/whatever is good noting on that society and your future attitude towards other situations like this one.

Well for the sake of following suit, leave an offering and/or pray like the other visitors do, but also I probably wouldn't do it on the first visit unless you find someone to give you decent information on the custom, just so you know you're doing things right. I vote on the "learn about it, then come back later" option.

I vote on the "learn about it, then come back later" option. I can understand that approach. I was thinking however of it being a rather popular destination for your particular interests and so perhaps this would be something you could figure out relatively easy. Of course that only happens in a hypothetical situation.
