Balance is a precarious thing to maintain in a world where both the living and the dead dwell. Etheria was once thought to have perfect balance between the living and the dead, each providing something to keep life sustained. The huge tree cities existed together with the sprawling stone cities of mankind, each giving something that the other needed. The ghostlings helped the humans unseen as they went about their daily routines, providing not only assistance but also an air of fun to everything done. The humans when their lives were gone, filled the dead world with new thoughts and fresh deeds that stimulated the growth of both sides.

The world is of various terrain, but the main sources of mana seem to come from the tree cities. Most of these tree cities are in fact giant trees, though perhaps not the way one might normally think of them. For example, the tree of frost is indeed made of ice, yet it grows a most valuable medicinal fruit once every three months, called the Lirlir fruit.

There are two trees which float high above on floating pieces of land, and one which orbits much higher in the sky, so high it is mistaken for a second moon.

It seems there are vast differences in cultures between each city and the next, especially within the Tree Cities.

It was to this that Kita became guardian. Her care for the inhabitants whether dead or living was gentle, giving, and guiding. But every Eden has its serpent and she fell victim to Az, realizing too late what he had done and his corruption began to spread- and she was unable to stop it. All she could think to do was try to correct what had happened.

The corruption had already caused a downward spiral and in a moment of unclear thought, Kita banished those ghostlings that would continue to make Etheria fall. Yet the ghostlings were not the entire cause and their disappearance left the world even more unbalanced than when left to Az's manipulations. He gave power out that had been stolen from Kita to his own minions, creating those who could affect the world in ways never seen before. Godly domains were created where once there had been none. Power was siphoned off that once had gone to Kita and those who had put her in place. Something would have to be done to repair the situation before it became so dire that all life, living or dead, would cease to exist.

But this was not all that Az had done. There was an even deeper betrayal and in a last ditch effort to save everything she held so close and dear, Kita crystalized herself in a cocoon at the base of the world tree so that the remaining bits of sanity/pure life she could give to the world was spared. When or whether she will awaken, none can even guess if any even know what she has done.

Juska, the Light Moon goddess and Seska, the Dark Moon goddess, did notice and knew they must fix the situation before all of Etheria was lost. They used the festival to return those ghostlings that had been banished. They more than any knew that light had to have its shadow or it would burn everything. The opposite was true also. Shadow had to have its light or the night would be very empty.

Drawing their power from both the living and the dead, the twin goddesses hoped it would be enough to right the downward spiral of their world. The ancients were brought back in the hopes that they could help find common ground where once it had been before, pulling a respect from both the living and the dead.

Sadly it was not so, and the corruption was not only amongst the ghostlings. Something had affected the goddesses themselves. One was always living while the other was dead to keep the domains balanced. Each year they would switch so that the system by which Etheria ran never became stagnant. But with both dead, the balance of power has begun to shift.

As with the goddesses, Etheria changed. The living began taking advantage of the spirits in ways that caused the ghostlings to refuse to aid them. Even the festival which was meant to give the goddesses power each year was filled with vendors hawking their wares for money. The living only saw what it meant to them in profits and gains. They did not see or understand what their faithlessness and abuse of the spirits was going to bring about.

And though returned, many ghostlings did not feel the welcome that they had once been given and were indeed angry to have been subjected to the whims of those more powerful than they. They separated themselves from the living, avoiding what had once been exciting to them. In response, the living began to forget that the ghostlings were more than figments of their imagination and as the time of the festival rolled around the next year, it was forgotten for other more trivial pursuits. And the power of the goddesses wanned even further causing more instabilty and decay. Etheria was slowly dying and if not stopped soon, neither the living nor the dead would have a place to live.

With the absence of Kita and Az and the weakness of the Moon goddesses, younger gods began to find power in domains that suited them.

Chronos stepped into Az's place, to protect what his master had and to do what he was meant to do. Valkon moved to his side refusing to help the living in their abuse of the animals he loved. They pulled ghostlings to their sides leading them away from the cities of the living whether by trickery or slavery. But Chronos and Valkon were not the only ones to find power where it had been least expected.

The goddesses wondered how to halt the selfishness that was happening and restore Etheria as much as themselves. It was then a plan began, sanctioned by Juska and Seska, to ensure that the living would understand that their survival depended as much on the dead world as it did on their own actions. And to teach the ghostlings that they could not dwell without the living beside them. After all, they were simply two aspects of the same being.
