Page stretching. >_<

Your paintings are so loose looking, even though they're detailed. Did you work from photos? Do you have anything that you painted without a photo? I'm curious to see your workflow too. I can't paint for s**t.

haha yea they are on the large size. sorry about that. but yea they are from photos. i do have some stuff not from photos but they're not finished. the reason i painted those were to practice anatomy and the like

the way i do it is i look t the photo and i always have it somewhere i can see it like print it out or on a second screen. do a quick sketch with the proportions about right and then its all about trying to match the colors. i'm trying to learn how to pick colors with out using the eyedrop tool

You paint really well! The way you use the colors makes it look so realistic *_*

Your paintings throw me off a bit, I think its the overuse of the smudge and blur. If you really want to learn to paint I would say first thing - don't ever use the eyedrop tool, blur, or smudge ever again. Ever.

I favor learning to paint physically before learning it digitally, but sometimes that is not always the most economic option (paint is expensive yo), but if you have the opportunity, I would recommend it. It's the restrictions that help you learn how to paint - you have to commit to mixing colors, and start to really think critically about how you apply it.

You can try to emulate this situation in Photoshop or Painter. Just give yourself restrictions. Don't use the eyedropper tool - use a bit of your page and test colors there. No blurring or smudging - rely on your brushes, try changing the flow and opacity depending on how smooth you want it. Embrace the brushstroke.

Anyways, that is my two cents. I would even step back a bit and practice some still life before portraiture, just because you wouldn't be using a photograph to study from. Honestly, I hate paintings done from photography, I can always tell when someone is really overusing a photo reference, but its a very common practice. This is more of a personal thing, but I don't really see the point in painting from a photograph (unless it is loose reference), because you already have the image in the photograph.

well vena

i'm not a painter so its not really a big deal to me to paint with ....paints. i do it for fun and the more i understand about it the better i am at doing 3-d stuff. i only really use the smudge tool on the hair cause i like the way it looks or to fix mistakes haha. i think you can see the progression of less and less use of smudge (earliest is on the bottom)and the point of these are for me to learn how to not use the eye dropper. and i agree with you partly. everyone i know use photos to paint to practice understanding light. and yes one could do that from still life. but the human body is different. complex with such subtle plane changes. like the breast of face. one of the few places that can have such a range of highlights and shadows and reflections. and with studies having a huge focus on anatomy and not painting itself might as well skip that part.

but thanks for the advice i'll try to keep that in mind

well, I think my point is just more that it seems fairly obvious that your images are using smudge and blur, and they are just not great tools to begin with. You don't have to paint in real life to paint digitally, but the same kinda principles apply, and in general getting rid of the crutches from the beginning helps get on track a lot quicker.
