She doesn't know quite what to make of physical affection and will stand stock still when on the receiving end of a hug or kiss, or jump with shock when silently approached from behind.
Ref exhibits minor echolalia when nervous, especially in crowds. Although she's mostly quiet, as previously mentioned, she does occasionally speak and laugh louder than is called for, which is usually also an indicator of nervousness.
She gets sputtery and nonsensical when she's angry, which is thankfully not often. Firefly possesses an exoskeleton, hard skin that protects her from harm. If her skin is cracked it takes a long time to heal. This exoskeleton restricts growth, and as such, Ref will molt when she grows significantly. If a cut hasn't healed by the time she grows, it will disappear with the emergence of her new skin. antennae
Firefly's antennae detect pheromones, and to a certain extent, smells, although her human nose does an all right job of that too. In tight spaces, she can use them to puzzle out the rough shape of her immediate surroundings by twitching them around until they bump into stuff. bioluminesence
This trait was once used by Firefly's smaller brethren to warn others of danger. Nowadays, they seem more interested in blinking out their love for one another. Ref usually resorts to lighting up her stomach when she's forgotten a flashlight, but can sometimes be caught glowing when she's very happy about something. compound eyes
Firefly has large compound eyes. They're completely black and slightly off-putting. Due to minor light sensitivity and nearsightedness, Ref prefers to wear her AWESOME GOGGLES at all times. shelled wings/flight

The firefly is capable of producing a "cold light" containing no ultra violet rays, with a wavelength of 510 to 670 nanometers in length. The light is pale yellowish or reddish green in color, with a light efficiency of 96%. Ordinary incandescent light has an efficiency of roughly 10%, with most of the energy being wasted as heat.
A firefly's light is the result of a combination of four different ingredients. It is produced through a chemical reaction involving luciferin, a substrate, luciferase, an enzyme, ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate), and oxygen. The firefly's light-producing organ is located in the sixth, or the sixth and seventh abdominal segments. It is within this cavity that the two compounds luciferin and luciferase are stored. A system of fine air tubes, controlled by the nervous system, bring moist air to the luciferin, oxidizing it and activating the luciferase to produce light, which is reflected through the thin exoskeleton of the abdomen.
Bioluminescence is mostly a phenomenon found at the bottom of the ocean floor, but fireflies also possess this ability. Contrary to what one might think, the glow that the fireflies give off is not used to attract or deter their prey. Fireflies instead use different intermittent signals in order to capture the attention of a possible future mate. Both sexes of fireflies use a specific flash pattern that can range anywhere from a short burst to a long continuous flashing sequence. Within any given population, there are many different species of fireflies and each species has a distinct signal. Males and females locate each other by recognizing their specific sequences.

A beautiful spyglass made of cherry wood, stained dark, with rose-tinted glass. This is Ref's most prized possession, second only to her goggles, and should not be messed with.
