Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows. Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play. The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you. The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you. Joyce nodded when he asked if she'd learned anything. She needed to hold her tongue in the presence of a male more. But what he said annoyed her. Though her face didn't show it, it wasn't right for him to just assume he was annoying by default. Assuming the worst, much, Bryce? Calm down, she told herself, even though her facial expression hadn't even changed. "I have not called you annoying, Mister Bryce." She bowed her head and gave him yet another curtsy. "Forgive me if I have judged you." When she sat back down she smoothed out her dress a bit, and said nothing.
It really wasn't her place to talk about her undergarments. It Bryce was going to make a fuss about it, alright. But talking about her corset? No. She wouldn't stoop so low. Still, he seemed actually concerned and worried. But she had already thanked him for his concern, she shouldn't be repetitive, it was boring to a man's ears, and a woman should never repeat what she has already said, it's useless chatter. Still, why was he worried? It wasn't her job to be curious about what a man thought. It was his buisness, she shouldn't meddle or interfere. Though, how was it committing suicide, she'd worn it plenty of times before and felt light-headed then. If you didn't feel light-headed after a while, it probably wasn't tight enough. The corset's job was to make her waist look extremely thin. Not too too thin, or else it only showed a woman was incapable of childbirth. Really, if she had wanted to, she could've made the corset tighter.
Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves. Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash. The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you. The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

When Joyce didn't get up, his face tilted to the side as he wondered how she could possibly deal with the strain the corset was putting on her. Thank god men didn't have to wear them. Then again, he wasn't from, nor was he living in that time period like Joyce was. Sighing, Bryce got up, thinking it was time for him to leave her be. He couldn't stand sitting still sometimes, and it was like pins and needles with her, so he stretched out a little, feeling relieved already. "Well, I'm glad you've learned something from that wretched book. I'm going to go get some fresh air. You are more than welcome to join me." He offered it up to her, guessing that she wouldn't take the offer. It would do her some good with that thing on her though, yet she didn't seem to understand how dangerous it was for her health.
Bryson was ready to leave when he seemed to have forgotten something. He was going to go to the headmistress if she didn't do as he asked. This girl was going to injure herself if she wasn't careful. Unless Joyce lived in a castle similar to hogwarts, the circumstances were not the same for her. She most likely didn't have to travel up and down stairs constantly, keep a focused and ready mind for learning, or have to speak to people at all, let alone as much as she was right then. He turned back to face her, feeling pity almost. She wouldn't see the pity, even more so because he wasn't exactly showing it on his face. "I'll stop pestering you so you can finish your reading. Please do not stay in here for too long. I wouldn't want you to pass out in here and be left for dead." Bryson wouldn't admit it, but he enjoyed Joyce's company to an extent, and he didn't want her to be dead the next time he saw her. That corset would do that to her, especially if she wasn't used to wearing it recently. Her body could have been changing in that time, and now could have been the worst time for her to start wearing it again. It was a game of chance, it seemed.

The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you. Joyce stood up when he was done talking, she was allowed to since Bryson already was, and she curtsied very low. "Who am I to refuse a man's offer." It wasn't a question. "I shall see you in the courtyard after I freshen up. Good day, Bryson." She headed to the bathroom. Not only did she need to perhaps loosen the corset a bit, but her bun was rather tight too, giving her a headache in addition to the tiny corset.
She wouldn't loosen it too much, but just an inch would be a blessed relief. She was truly very skinny anyways. her little sister Terry would start wearing corsets in a few years, so she was still a bit chubby. But the most recent time she had been to a doctors, which was last year, they told her that her ribs may have taken permanent damage from the strain of the corset. They had even advised her to stop wearing them, but that would never happen. her mother had forbidden it. Joyce needed to wear them, it was her beliefs, her religion, her faith. So she left the library, someone could've stacked books on her head and they wouldn't fall off, she was so stiff. Perfectly gloved hands by her side, she walked to the girl's bathroom.
