ok so the new devil may cry game will be a prequel and from what I've seen it looks considerably different while still maintaining that style and flare that is stereotypical of DMC. Edit: in the light of new information, the game isn't a prequel..it's a whole new sideline series.

Like, starting a new canon from scratch? well as far as I understand its a prequel but its not been confirmed yet where exactly it fits. But i think if its a prequel then they get away without upsetting too many people..if its a whole new thing from scratch then they would surely upset ALOT of people. buti have to admit that even though they brought Nero into the last game, it was starting to get a bit repetative. All the enemies are the same in every game they just look slightly different. its the same thing every time..how many times does a character have to start out "ordinary" then acquire a demon aspect then acquire all the weapons that he'd obtained in the previous games anyway.

The way I see it is, if they completely change Dante into THAT, what we've seen in the trailer, then people would rather it be a reboot, rhan a prequel. Cause otherwise, it's basically saying, "Yes, that very same Dante from the other games started out as this brown haired ugly dude." Or, they could say, "It's a different storyline, so it's a different Dante." Which is a much better alternative, I think. See, I see the opposite to your logic. If they retcon and completely butcher the backstory of the original series, that would probably piss off a lot more people than saying, "It's a different storyline." Then again, it is Capcom. Well, remaking it in a way that it's not gonna follow the events of the first one, rather it's gonna have a whole new storyline.

It's a reboot: http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2010/09/dmc/ thanks for that info smile seems like a weird idea though...to give it to completely new people and just basically redo everything...I didn't realise the old series was failing that badly and I don't really understand the logic of doing this. i could understand them making a whole new series based in the same world but with a completely different character but I don't understand why they would take a character that is so loved and change him :S

Originally they started working on 'Resident Evil 4', and they kept adding more and more to it, and they made so many changes that it wasn't Resident Evil anymore. So they decided to use what they had and turn it into a completely different game. And thus, Devil May Cry was born.
So who knows, maybe Ninja theory started playing around with some ideas, and they said, "Who should publish this game?" "Well, what about Capcom? They like crazy action adventure games." And then Capcom says, "This is a lot like Devil May Cry. Just make it into Devil May Cry."
