Darkhawk stood at the head of the superhuman army. There was a slight quaver in his stomach.
Why had he been chosen? Why him? He cleared his throat and spoke.
"Uhm. All of you. Captain America, Mister Fantastic. Nova, you Avengers, Spider-Man. Doctor Doom, the Wrecking Crew. As you all know, that mysterious light picked me, and it's given me the control to direct and lead you. It said that if we lose this fight...we lose everything. We lose our reality.
It's all on my shoulders.
We don't know what's on the other side of this portal, and we don't know what to expect. All I can say is...fight for our survival!"
******
"You gotta be $%#^ing me."
Guy Gardner's response was pretty apt, as the mysterious light flew around the gathering of Earth's most powerful heroes and villains...and chose Deadshot as the champion of New Earth.
Lawton stood still for a moment, then lit a cigarette as Earth's greatest and worst looked at him.
"Whattaya want, a speech? Screw that."
He cocked his rifle.
"Kill anything that moves."
And so his army, linked to his control by the mysterious light, marched forward into the rift, unsure of what they'd see on the other side. Lawton wondered briefly what it would be like to be wiped out from existence...and then started aiming his rifle.

gonk
There is a reason I picked you, Christopher.
gonk
You ARE the one. Have faith in yourself.
gonk
Ugh...now you're just being ridiculous. Lead the army. You'll be fine.
The heroes and villains of Earth 616 looked at Chris dubiously(derisively in the case of Dr Doom) and waited for his orders.
A lot of you don't know me...I'm not the most powerful of us. Or the fastest. Or the smartest.
Indeed.
The other villains laughed at Doom's remark until Steve Rogers and Thor stepped up to Chris's side. The laughter died quickly.
But I am stubborn. Incredibly so. I will not give up on us. Ever.
The crowd nodded in approval and awaited their orders.

Floyd felt a strange sensation as he passed through the rift. Time itself seemed to slow. Gave him a good moment to think. Why had the light chosen him? There was a lot of jobs that Floyd Lawton was the best man for, but saving reality? Please. He could think of worse things than being erased from reality. Running out of cigarettes, for one. On the other hand, he had a little girl to think about. And then, of course, there was his pride. Because once he took a job, he always saw it through, and in the end, this was just another job.
He kept his gun at the ready as he finally felt himself pass through to the other side of the rift, ready to shoot the first face he saw - but there was nothing. Looking around, he saw an unfamiliar metropolitan looking city. It looked almost like New York City, but had elements of Metropolis, Gotham, Star City and he was sure that was just the tip of the iceberg. So this is where he was to mount his universe's final stand. Fine by him. Lots of nice vantage points. But no enemies in sight. He turned to the army of metahumans gathered behind him, looking to Superman.
"Hey, faster than a speedin' bullet. Why don't you go put that impressive power set to use and do some recon?" he growled, phrasing it as though there was a choice in the matter. Superman nodded in response and took flight, in search of the denizens of Earth-616.

Hmm...we'll need a scout.
A voice from the shadows grumbles something.
You're right. Silver Surfer, you're fast and can handle yourself. Scout the area and if you see anything get back here quick.
The grumbles some more.
Okay...this is why I asked you to advise me. We'll hold this ground right now since we're uphill from the rest of the city and there limited approaches. The center of the line will be held by our heavy hitters. The Hulks, Thor, and the like. Avenger members will back them up lead by Steve Rogers. Cyclops can split up X-Men members for the right flanks of each line and Doom can split the villains for the left. Street guys...see Steve for assignments. He'll know best where to use you.
More grumbling from the shadows...
Excellent idea! We'll have a shock and awe reserve strike force. Nova...gather Beta Ray Bill, Ronan, and the other cosmic guys. You'll be our shock and awe. Hit any breach in our lines or any hole we punch in theirs.
The heroes and villains start to drift away to their assignments.
Logan...Bullseye...a moment. I think I'll have a counterpart on the other side. A leader. I want you see if you can get at him and take him out. If we take out their leader than maybe we can end this quick. Take anyone who you think can sneak in there and get at him...or her. Except Deadpool. He's too loud.
Logan and Bullseye hurry off. Someone steps from the shadows.
An excellent idea, Darkhawk.
Thanks Thanos. I'm glad I picked you to advise me on strategy.

General Powell scribbles a note and hands it to Quicksilver.
Please give that to Doom.
Quicksilver races off to deliver the message.
Darkhawk, what was that?
Nothing to worry about strategy-wise. Just tweaking Doom's nose.
Not a bright idea. Doom is dangerous for a human.
I figure he's already plotting so I might as well have fun. Now...is Weapon SG ready?
Yes. Are you sure about holding it back?
Oh yes...we'll need it if we truly get screwed.

Meanwhile...on the left flank of Earth 616...Quicksilver has just delivered a message to Dr Doom.
...
Powell will pay.
What's that Doc?
Call Doom that at your own peril, Wrecker.
...
Being forced to follow the orders of Powell is insulting...
An angry Dr Doom begins to....sing!
Doom: I know that your powers of retention Are as thick as Sabretooth's backside But thick as you are, pay attention My words are a matter of pride
It's clear from your vacant expressions The lights are not all on upstairs But we're talking generals and successions Even you can't be caught unawares
So prepare for a chance of a lifetime Be prepared for sensational news A shining new era Is tiptoeing nearer
Wrecker: For us, is there room?
Just listen to Doom I know it sounds sordid But you'll be rewarded When at last I am given my dues! And injustice deliciously squared Be prepared!
Absorbing Man: Yeah! Be prepared. We'll be prepared. For what?
Doom: For the death of "General" Powell!
Absorbing Man: Uh...is he sick?
No, fool! We're going to kill him... and the heroes too!
Wrecker: Great idea! Who needs a general?
Wrecker and the Absorbing Man link arms and dance in a circle.
AM and Wrecker: No general, no heroes, nah nah nah nah nah nah!
Doom: Idiots! There will be a general! I will be general! Stick with Doom, and you'll never be lose to those heroes again!
AM and Wrecker: Yay, all right! Long live Doom! Long live the Doom!
All the villains: It's great that we'll soon be connected With a king who'll be all-time adored
Doom: Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected To take certain duties on board The future is littered with prizes And though I'm the main addressee The point that I must emphasize is You won't get a sniff without Doom!
Villains: So prepare for the coup of the century
Be prepared for the murkiest scam Meticulous planning Tenacity spanning Decades of denial Is simply why I'll Be general undisputed Respected, saluted And seen for the wonder Doom is!
BE PREPARED!
Back on the center of the line, the heroes watch in disbelief at the villains song.
Uh...Steve?
No idea, Hawkeye.

Hello, boys, look alive! Batten down the hatches and lash any equipment! Prepare the cannons and ready yerselves to repel boarders!
It was Captain Powell's first run as the commanding officer of "The Purple Lady" and no traitorous b*****d was going to ruin it.
Mr Tenzil! Can you identify the scallywags yet?
Looks like it's Sir Lawton's Raiders, sir!
Lawton eh? One hundred gilders to the man who brings me his bloody head!

Captain Powell took a minute to reflect as he waited for Sir Lawton's attack. It was fitting that he was commanding "The Purple Lady"...it was named after the love of his life.
Her name was Duchess Clarice Ferguson of Umbridge. Unfortunately for the Captain and the Duchess, Clarice was engaged to Earl Calvin of Rankin. Duchess Clarice had no love for Earl Calvin for this marriage was arranged by her father.
The Duchess and Captain Powell had carried on a torrid affair until they had been found out by Lord Anthony Stark. Lord Stark offered Powell two choices: he turn the Captain over to the Earl and Clarice's father or he could captain one of Stark's airships.
The Captain had no choice. He couldn't ruin the honor and reputation of the woman he loved. He choose exile and named his airship after the Duchess he loved.
