User ImageOnce again, he was sitting on the beach, waiting for the arrival of a Kuniku so that they might go on a walk. The familiarity of the situation burned Unagi in a part of his heart that he thought he would never let take control of him again... but no, no no, this was a different situation. This time it was Sangokai, who would be approaching him from the bright and shimmering expanse of ocean laid out before him, rather than that dark and musty forest that had once been a shelter to his brother Vidar. This was not going to be a repeat of what had happened. Vidar would not come out and betray him with those pale eyes, those eyes that still haunted the white-faced male in his dreams. It was going to be a meeting that, if all things went well, Unagi might very well say could be one of the best days of his life.

In an attempt to ease his tired mind and aching heart, Unagi had asked that cheerful Kunifish to meet him on the beach alone, without the knowledge of Masao and the others. Laid under the guise of something as simple as a walk, he actually had intended for this to be much more serious. Unagi had told himself that it had to be today. On this morning he not only meant to tell the idiot how he really felt, but also to ask Kai to come with him to Honshu... as more than just a friend.

Spotting a finned tail momentarily poking out of the water, Unagi knew right away that this was it. There was no turning back now from the window of opportunity that he had forced open. He stole one final golden glance at the thick foliage behind him, flinching as he almost thought he saw his brother's shape watching him from the trees, before he stood up and moved forward to greet the one he had been waiting for. "Good morning, Kai." And with those words alone, that was all he wished things would be from now on. Good.

User ImageHaving not particularly payed close attention to the time it was already, Sangokai--quite possibly the densest Kuniku in all existence--had been floating around in the water for the past ten minutes, having been distracted by quite the beautiful school of glittering fish... And ended up following them for a bit before remembering he had a very important place to be. And that was on the beach with his very own, and very dear best friend.

"Butterfly!" What was once just a single fin, was now a full grown, bulky Kunifish leaping out of the water like a dolphin jumping toward the sun. But unlike the dolphin, who would eventually splash gracefully back into the water... Sangokai dove onto his precious Unagi, tackling him to the sand below with his hunk of muscles. The light teal male was heavy, but ignored this fact like one would ignore an obnoxious child. That's just the way the aquatic Kuniku's mind worked. "Sorry I'm late... I just got caught up with these fish, an' I just couldn't stop starin' at 'em!" Taking a breath before he backed off the other male, Sangokai sat down in front of Unagi, peering down at him as if he were wondering why in the world he was still laying down. Like he should have bounced right back up like a balloon.

"But I'm here now." To some, that would be quite the understatement. In another's eyes, it could be easily seen that Kai gave 110% wherever he showed up, no matter what the situation was. ...Especially around Unagi... Ever since Vidar had left him stranded in his heart. Hell, for his adored Butterfly, Sangokai would give one-hundred and ten-thousand percent in a heartbeat, should he need to. Kai had never felt anything close to love before-- Never did he have experience with a family, or a mate, but he could only imagine inside that curiously lonely mind of his, that he felt it every day he was around the golden-eyed male.

And he liked it.

"So, you ready for the walk, Butterfly? I could use one after playin' around with Shark Bait all day." Shark Bait. The playful nickname for Ajani, Unagi's half brother. Funny thing about Sangokai... He never seemed to care much about anyone's original name. It was 'too serious' for him. Besides. Butterfly, in his honest opinion, suited Unagi much better.

"Oof! Ugh, damn it Kai. Get off." And things were already off to a grand start, weren't they? Being pummeled to the ground unexpectedly wasn't Unagi's idea of a greeting in the slightest, but that's just how Sangokai was. His unpredictability and cheerful disposition were what had wormed their way inside of Unagi's heart and had a determination that couldn't be moved... and yet they were also annoyances, on most occasions. Picking himself up off the ground and shaking the sand out of his fur, he took a moment to look the other male over. His water resistant coat was still glossy, a sign of good health, and there were no tears in his fins or scars on his body, indicators of him having gotten into a fight; it reminded him that he really ought to take some time to teach Sangokai how to fight. The idiot surprisingly enough had the right amount of weight and muscle to be a tough opponent if he wanted, but he just lacked the brains to be of real use. "Yeah, I'm ready so let's go... An' quit getting so distracted. This shouldn't take forever."

Not hesitating in pressing his slick wet fur against his dry companion's side, Sangokai set their pace for the walk--a slow, easy pad to wherever they were headed--letting Unagi lead all the while. Of course, the Kunifish had absolutely no idea where they were headed, so it was only natural to let the other walk just a bit ahead of him. Anyway... Kai liked it that way. He could feel Nagi's heartbeat through his fur at this particular angle. He had brought it up with the other male once, and he had been chastised for liking such weird things... Granted, Unagi didn't really nag him about the subject like he usually did when Kai was being 'stupid'. That had seemed strange to the thicker male.

"We're not goin' on a long walk, then?" That was fine with Sangokai. As long as he got to be around the dark teal Kuniku, everything was as good as gold in the Kunifish's book... but it was going to bother him that he didn't know what exactly Unagi was trying to accomplish. He was too curious to keep his mouth shut.

"So what're we doin', anyway? This's a pretty empty place to come to for somethin' that won't take forever. Do I get to see somethin' pretty? Oh! I bet it's so cool..!" Always getting ahead of himself. Hopefully, it wouldn't annoy Unagi on a day like today...

His brow furrowed slighty as wet fur met his, but Nagi's expression quickly softened as he remembered what could be felt from this degree. His heartbeat... Sure, he was relatively calm now but in only a few minutes he was almost certain that the rhythm would skyrocket. Hell, for all he knew anyone who walked by would be able to hear the loud pounding in his chest as they drew nearer and nearer to that place. The waterfall. The very spot where his soul had nearly been ripped in two as he parted ways with his brother for good... A bit of anger entered his mind just at the memory of what had happened there, but Unagi held it back. As it turned out, he'd fled from Vidar back down the beach and had coincidentally run into Sangokai, the Kunifish leaving the ocean to go visit 'Mama' and 'Shark Bait' despite the late hour.

Unagi had almost broken down into tears as he confessed most of what had happened between himself and Vidar, and the other had been a momentary source of relief to him, up until he'd gotten the mindset of keeping things to himself in order to protect his fragile mother... It had only half way worked. Sazanami had more easily been able to move on because she never knew what had happened to her youngest son, but the lack of knowledge had also opened up a wound in her heart that would never fully heal until she had the answer. "We're going somewhere specific. But it ain't pretty, so don't you ever call it that." He was oddly serious as he moved forward, paws sinking into the sand and leaving marks behind. It had to be done there. If Unagi was ever going to move on with his life, he had to make sure it was done in the place where a lasting part of it had ended. Spotted ears pricked forward as he already could identify the distant sound of the falls.

"When we get there... just listen to me, okay?" No, he couldn't give any more detail than that. He was still sorting things out in his mind about how he was even supposed to do this... For perhaps the fourth or fifth time since meeting the Kunifish, Unagi wished the airheaded male had just been born a girl instead.

"But why--" Oh, it confused Sangokai so much. Why in the world would they go to a place-- A very specific place, according to Unagi --if it weren't pretty? Or rather, if he knew it wasn't pretty? But the Kunifish had learned over the long days of being with the serious male that it was unwise to question him to the point of irritation. And really, Kai didn't want to chance it today. It had been Nagi who had instigated the meeting today, and that was a rare, blessed occasion, indeed.

"I promise I'll listen." To be honest, Sangokai was worried in the slightest. He knew that the dark teal male was serious, but it wasn't often that he was this serious about something. The weight of the mood was so heavy now, it even had the bubbly Kunifish keeping his maw closed for once, though, it created room for worry. Very unnecessary worry, yes, but worry none-the-less. What had to be so important that Unagi had to go and take him somewhere quite deserted? Was he... Haha... no. It couldn't possibly be. Sangokai couldn't possibly believe that the other was leaving. That would be silly. Mama and King Fish were happy here... Sure, Shark Bait, Koi, Tempest, and Water Lily had grown up and had started looking for their own paths, but... That didn't mean...

No. Kai just had to put it out of his head. That was stupid. Unagi just probably wanted to have a heart to heart talk about his family again. Which, on quite the opposite side of the bulky male's worries, was a really wonderful thing. Somewhere in the distance, Sangokai could hear the muffled roar of a waterfall... And suddenly, the mood had changed again, and the aquatic Kuniku felt a heavy weight not only in his heart, but in the heart he felt through his shoulder that rattled in the other's ribcage.

What was to come would change his life forever... No doubt.

The truth was rapidly approaching Unagi, even though his paw steps carried no particularly amazing speed. He made a turn, although being careful so that Sangokai could still stay pressed closed if he wished and began walking the path into the jungle. He stayed silent, simply ignoring the flowers and light patterns on the ground from the light filtering through the trees above as they passed, still trying to set his thoughts in order.

He would have to tell Sangokai the truth about how he felt, but also that he and Saza, along with Masao and his half of the family would be leaving soon to return to Honshu... They had discussed it a while back, but with the conception of Sazanami's second litter, the date had obviously been pushed back and almost out of mind. But now that Isamu, Ran, Ajani, and Seika were fully grown there was no real reason to stick around when it had been decided that they would take a return boat to Honshu, and from there go explore Shikoku next. But whether the group had wanted to stay or not on this island, Unagi knew he would eventually have left Kyushu on his own. He missed his Uncle Yasuragi, and couldn't bear to stay in the place was slowly but surely sucking the life out of him much longer. He intended to take the same boat as his mother back, but wouldn't be following her along to the holiest of Nippon's islands.

Using his broad chest to push apart the leaves of the foliage in their way, he stepped out into the clearing where the roaring waterfall, that symbol of endless energy that could do nothing but remind him of Vidar crashed into a large pool below. "This is it, Sangokai. This is where..." He shook his head and trailed off, unsure of where to even begin. No amount of practice could prepare him for this very moment, and here they were. At the final destination.

So... This was it.

Sangokai knew exactly what this was upon seeing the raging falls. He had been told about the area by Unagi, and, well. This was an awful place to be for the smaller male. But, back to his main question...

"W...Why are we here, Nagi..?" The overly peppy Kuniku's tail fell, and he sat down, worry swirling in his opal coloured eyes. Really, why in the world would Unagi bring him here to this horrid place? It was wretchedly beautiful in Sangokai's eyes, and it hurt his heart to have to view it as ugly--Though he did without a second thought for his best friend. Something was up, and as much as Kai tried not to worry, he couldn't help but start freaking out again inside his head. And in order to attempt to keep the now-terrifying news from spilling out Unagi's mouth, the bulky male tried to urge the other from this spot.

"Let's just go some place prettier, I don't want ya killin' yourself over somethin' you can say anywhere else..."

"I'd rather be anywhere else in the world, but I can't keep running away." The teal male uttered, beginning to pace in the long grass. He didn't know what to say first, and his heart was already acting like a hummingbird caught between a pair of scissors. This wasn't going to work, was it..? Unagi stopped, turning for a moment to gaze at the torrent of water before him. It was all just tumbling out... Perhaps if he just started talking, the words would find their own way to come out properly? He took a deep breath and shook out his fur one last time before looking directly at the kunifish that had come so far with him. If he could just start then maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all. "Kai, I... I know I treat you like crap all the time, and I'm sorry. You're always smilin' and I want to smile back, but I don't really know how to be nice anymore... You still stick around me like it's not that big of a deal, and for that, I want to say thank you."

Unagi was sure it sounded crazy coming from a storm cloud like him, but he wasn't even finished yet. If Sangokai didn't flip out on him now, then he surely would once he got even further into the improvised speech he was pulling now. "Just about every day I tell you that you're an idiot, and you ARE but I mean, you're not that dumb... I don't always get everything you try an' tell me but I know you never meant any harm when you come to visit." He wasn't sure where he was going with all of this, but his gaze turned downward as he continued on talking. The words kept coming out and he wasn't going to try to stop them now that he'd started. "You're persistent and I say that it really pisses me off, but that's not really true... I like that I get to see you pretty much every day, and it really makes Ajani and my mother happy too, so I'm actually glad to have you around."

For the first time that he could remember in a long time, Unagi felt nervous, so much that he was pretty sure his legs were going to start shaking on him. He stopped for just a moment, wanting to search the lighter's male face for anything like acceptance, but he kept his field of vision turned down to his paws instead. "...I bet this really doesn't make any sense to you." The muscled male sighed and shook his head, not even knowing what to expect from his self-proclaimed best friend. Maybe Kai would just run off, or if he was feeling kind enough the kunifish might even give him a laugh before he was shot down during his first confession of ever having feelings for someone. All I'm tryin' t' say is that I don't hate you... I don't know how much trust I can put in what I'm about to say, but... if it can mean something like 'You make me feel free', then I love you, Sangokai." There he'd finally said the damn thing... and he'd felt like he'd just made a huge a** of himself. This hadn't been anything like some sappy love story passed from mother to child, and it sure as hell wasn't perfect in any shape or form. "s**t." Unagi just sat down and shut his eyes, pale ears lowering against his head.

"........"

Well, that certainly was not what Kai had been expecting to hear. He was waiting for the deathblow of a lifetime... And... Had gotten something so much... So much better... For a good solid minute, Sangokai sat in silence and shock, just staring, wide-eyed into the waterfall, for once not having anything to say. There was nothing. No words in his mind could describe how he felt at the minute, and the Kunifish even had to shake his head to make sure he wasn't dreaming.

Had he heard that right..? Did Unagi... The Unagi just tell him that he loved him?

Opening his maw, Sangokai tried to speak, but nothing came out. No words, no sounds... Again and again he tried, but all he managed to do was to look like a dying fish. But that was Kai. When he couldn't actually say something stupid, he looked stupid... But... But Unagi said he loved him, and dammit, looking stupid didn't matter anymore! Unagi said he loved him. That was all he had ever needed. And now the softened male was all his.

"Unagi...!" Never had there been so much emotion put into a single name as Sangokai pressed himself into Unagi's chest, lowering himself down in utter love and respect for the other, crushing their fur together as if it would save him from dying. His scent. The bulky Kunifish had to be covered in it. They would be together. Forever...

"Unagi... I've... Always...." Choking on his words, he finally pulled back up to his full height, joy and relief glowing in his orbs. "I've always loved you..."
