Betty Brown, Texan lawmaker says Asians should change their names to American names so we can pronounce them more easily.

Seriously it only took me literally 5 minutes to learn how to pronounce Chinese names. It wasn't that hard and my first and main language is English. Screw you Betty Brown!

She has the nerve to resist apologizing for her ignorant law suggestion.
Some lulzy comments ensued. I skipped over some comments to some of my favs XD

I agree with ya. So what if you have a hard time pronouncing their names, either you take a little extra time to learn how to say their name right, or... Well just do that, it's not that hard.

Fail lawmaker initiative is fail. stare And frankly, I don't think there is a country (or at least, not many of them) in which there be absolutely no names at all that are harder to pronounce in English. It's normal since diversity exists lol.So why the fuss for?
This Betty Brown lady probably has far too much free time.

On a more paranoic note, some would see this as promoting ignorance toward another culture. especially since it's not that hard to learn a slightly different name rolleyes .

In the political world, there are people who fail and people who fail.

sometimes. alot less silent letters.

but dont alot of asian people sub their asian names for American ones anyway? all the ones at my schools did. the awkward things is that they always had the most generic names possible. like Sam Hao. Judy Chang. Tom Wang. or Bill. neutral

i think it's pretty rude/inconsiderate.

You know she must really have a serious problem when it comes to pronouncing things. Honestly its not that hard if you just practice. To tell you the truth i think talking english is the worst language because i like all other languanges except english. She needs to get into culture

While we're at it, the politician should change her name so that Australian's can pronounce it easier.

It's not even the language. It's only the names. -.-

I read through the comments, yeah I agree with all of you. I dunno what a guailo is sorry. maybe Marie Rouge can answer that quesiton.

Spending tax money on that useless law is fail. Rather than wasting innocent peoples' money she should just ask how to pronounce the names.

It's like trying to extinguish the sun, instead of using sunblock, just so you won't be sunburnt. (We'd all die if the sun went out tho. lol)

And it's not learning the language like you guys said, just say their name and you're done. :p

I learn Chinese too. I'm Chinese (and have a perfectly easily-pronounced name). >_> But I still have no idea what the hell a 'gwailo', which I'm pretty sure is properly written as 'guai luo/lou', is. D<

I like your analogy. biggrin

If the Indians, Malays, Koreans, Japanese, French and Canadians in my school can do it, why can't she? Tsk.
