I read in TV guide that the writers were not going to change House that much by making him into a lovable character, they said it would ruin it.

Personally I think the romance is there solely to pander to what the writers perceive as their 'ER audience'. I don't think they realize how many women are attracted purely to the snark. It's a handy tool for exploring characters, but there is such a thing as too much girly drama.
