Well I think that kids should know what race they are. because alot of people treat and respect you differantly because of it. its a grimm trouth that is very grimm and verry............well.. truthful. I personally don't notice race much. call it ignorant or whatever but i dont. I mostly have mexican and some white friends. but thats just kinda random. I really dont care though.I also don't think it should have a baring on who you are as a person. just so long as your not ashamed of your race then its all fine.
[I grew up around a lot of black people but I had "mostly" non-black friends, I guess. I suppose I wasn't the "token" black girl in school, and in junior high, one of the groups I hung out with was the "stoners." I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I mean, I still knew I was black. I do agree that it is important for kids to know that they are a certain race or whatever, as long as they are eased into it, I guess. I mean, you shouldn't make kids feel like they are worse off because they are black, for example.]

hmmmm well i grew up in the well "Ghetto", basically inner city Jersey City, and i really didnt realize race until about the third grade when i started hearing about racial crimes and whatnot, and when i moved to the south i became very aware....that i was different, but since i hvae always been the kind of person never to gear myself towards one race i had white friends and black friends and some of my black friends used to call me "Traitor" and whatnot and as a young child....that really hurt...so i guess it all depends on how you grow up, because im 17 now and a junior in higschool and still see some kids who are racist, of any race, and some kids who decide to fit the stereotype.....to the tee...so once again i guess it's depends on how you were raised

[I hadn't remembered that, but yes, I can see that as something that would tell you really quickly that people come in different ethnicities.]

i think its because they cant understand why i would want to hang out with them, you know? there like yah ok its cool to talk to them occasionally at school but other than that im "Whiteboy"....i guess all there lives they've been hanging with their own race and thats where they feel comfortable so they dont see the need to interact with white people or any other race....or they just dont want to

[ xd It's too bad, but yes, I suppose that's just how people are. I have to wonder if any other nationality besides black Americans descriminates so much toward each other. confused It's sickening really. It's not about being held back by The Man; hell, "The Man" is sitting back while black people do a damn good job of holding one another back. stare ]

The area I lived in when I was young was black, white, hispanic, and asian so I knew that my friends and I were all different. The only problems I had were with children who weren't used to hanging around blacks. I could tell because they would be the ones who would ask the, "why do you put grease in your hair" questions and act like being darker was such a big deal.

The only shock I had was when I visited my grandmother in NY and I was old enough to realize that some blacks came from countries I never heard of like Jamaica LOL. It's funny now but I really thought Jamaicans were speaking another language because I couldn't understand a word they were saying.

I think it's important to introduce your children to a world outside of their home environment. It enables them to become aware of other cultures and allows them to appreciate the real world and not the black/white world.

When I was a young child, I knew our family was black. However, my mom and I are lightskinned, and my sister and dad are dark. When I was about three, I remember looking in the mirror at myself and saying "I'm white" and feeling really sad about it. My older sister explained to me that I wasn't white, just light skinned. I grew up keenly aware of the different races, and my upbringing was such that I grew up believing that being black was the best way to be, and that other races were missing out on something special. I remember feeling pity for white people at an early age.

My best friend is white, and she raises her daughter to not notice the race of other people. Her daughter has friends of different races and she doesn't see them as her "black friends" or "mexican friends", for example. I suppose my friend feels that she doesn't want her daughter to feel that race should be an issue. I can respect that.

[Very well-said. 3nodding I agree. Also, being humans we have to be a part of society whether we like it or not in most case. Learning tolerance for all people regardless of their differences helps condition you to be a part of society.]

I know I was really young when I became "aware" cause I was the kid who asked "why" until I was satisfied. But I wasn't aware that there was a "problem" until like.. 5th grade. This boy had a crush on me, and he was from 'the city' while I lived in 'the county'... so the other 'city' girls didnt want him talking to me at first.. but after that, I think I started playing with them at recess more.
Because of how I was raised, "ghetto" was foreign to me until middle school, and they wouldn't talk to me in middle school...
I dunno, I live in Colorado now (versus St.Louis) so - that limits the number of black people drastically as well as how they act.. Generally at my school, all the black people know each other, cause most of us have moved here...
Which reminds me, of doin rap battles in the cafeteria and some girl ran and told security there was a fight...
So off topic! Okay. Im done razz
