Akil’s eyes turned to an exuberant shade of grateful when Haqikah saved him from the “bath” and he immediately made to follow the hound. He wanted to say goodbye to a few other cats but she was addressing him now and that wouldn’t be very polite.
“I was named Akil at birth but you can call me anything you wish, miss.” His head was respectfully low but his eyes shot upward. Did he dare to ask something in return? After a brief hesitation he decided he would. “If I may so bold as to ask something… how do you wish to be addressed?” Miss? Madam? Mistress? Ma’am? My lady? Akil had heard them all but he was sure Haqikah would have some kind of preference on the subject.

Akil. That was simple enough name to remember. If he proved to be a useful slave she might even go to the trouble to actually use his name when addressing him. She liked the way he carried himself so far, he was very polite and pleasant and she figured he would make a good personal servant instead of a simple house servant. Perhaps she should have bought two slaves... It was only proper that a lady of her standing had at least two servants to wait on her.
In her parents house she had been called Miss Haqikah or more often "Little Miss" by the slaves. She intensely disliked being called little, especially after she outgrew even the largest slaves in the house. She was still not a very large hound, but that was not relevant. None of those names would do.
And it hadn't been much better when she lived with Omari. The slaves in her former mates house all seemed to be more loyal to him than to her, except perhaps the servants he had given her (but then he took those back when he threw her out, the b*****d). Many of the slaves had just called her Mrs Omari, as if she had no identity of her own and was just another part of the Master.
"You may call me Mistress," she said after some thinking, "Miss is just fine around the house, and you can call me Mistress Haqikah for more formal events."
She was her own hound now, and she found she rather liked it. If she ever took a mate again she would have to lay down some ground rules, and make sure he couldn't discard her if he grew tired of her company. But she really needed two servants, why hadn't she picked another one when she had the chance? She filled her nostrils with the fresh but hot air outside. Oh, right...
"I think I have a first task for you already," she said and turned to her new slave. "Are you up for it Akil."
As if he had a choice, but she could at least show some goodwill this first day. The last thing she needed was to have her new slave run away because he decided he could do better elsewhere. She was going to show him that he was better off with her, that he had no reason to look for a Mistress elsewhere.

Akil nodded and took a quick look around to see if anyone was watching the interaction before he could decide how to address the hound at this particular moment. Haqikah’s instructions made sense to him.
“Yes, Mistress!” he said with a wide, eager smile. “Anything you wish. I’ll do my best!”
The cat’s tail danced happily from side to side, a small expectant grin slowly forming as he waited for his first assignment. The slave was desperate to make a good first impression so he had to succeed at all costs. This wasthe moment he'd show the hound she hadn't made a mistake in choosing him.

Haqikah was very pleased with her servant's reaction and her curved tail even wagged a few times in approval. She felt like a brand new hound already, with a servant tending to the boring things that needed doing. Her life looked much better than it had done just a few days ago. What a difference a slave made...
"Wonderful," she said and smiled, "See, I need a second servant, a house servant. I want you to go back in there and buy it for me."
Now, he couldn't buy a thing without some stones so Haqikah opened her purse to check on her remaining funds. She would need to save some for food and other expenses on the way home, and she had to find some way of cleaning her slaves even if she had to pay for it. One copper and ten pebbles would have to be enough for slave nember two, and she rummaged around until she found a suitable pouch to put the spending money in. She didn't expect Akil to haggle so she wasn't going to give him more than she was willing to spend.
"Now," she continued, "You probably know some of the other slaves so try to pick someone suitable for housework. Just make sure you don't buy one that's a troublemaker or one that smells of disease. You know the smell of disease, right?"

Akil took the hound’s tail wag as a very good sign that he was saying the right things and his smile grew wider. Thankfully, he managed to keep the same expression when she continued talking even though her words did surprise him quite a bit. Buying a slave? He’d never done that before. What if he made a mistake? And Akil had seen many sick cats at the market but he wasn't sure the "smell of disease", whatever that was. Taking the mistress' stones was a big responsability and Akil really hoped he could find the perfect slave for her. “Ah… yes, I will go back and bring you a slave, a house servant. One that looks clean and polite, mistress, a hardworking one. A good coat with no bugs, clean eyes, clean nose, no coughing, no smelly wounds. And no slaves with bloody or smelly… s-stool.” He said tentatively, trying to judge her reaction. Was that what she meant by “smell of disease”? Akil hoped he wasn’t showing her the limits of his ignorance. Also, he was pretty sure that discussing excrements was not exactly the best way to end the dialogue. He looked a little embarrassed, really.

Her new slave seemed smart enough to trust with this mission, and she nodded as he started to list the things he was going to look for. He was getting a bit graphic there at the end but she decided against reprimanding him for it. It was a sure sign of disease after all, even if she would have been better off without the mental image. She definitely needed to set some boundaries when it came to tolerable conversation topics and polite word usage, but not right now. Akil had been a decent conversationalist up to this point so it might just have been a one time slip up.
"Absolutely no bugs or fleas," she agreed and had to shake herself to stop her own fur from itching. After cleaning up her slaves she needed to find a nice place to take a bath. Sadly Zanzibar didn't have an abundance of grooming parlours as far as she knew, and she had lived in the city for a while even if that wasn't something she bragged about.
"I've put enough stones to buy a slave in this pouch," she said and proceeded to tie the long strings around Akil's neck, trying to touch his fur as little as possible. He still had the distinctive scent of the slave house on him and she did not want it transferred to her. She needed to see if she still had some fragrant herbs in her bag. They were useful to make a good impression on ladies and gentlemen of a certain calibre, but she figured some fresh herb fragrance might improve on her slave's ah... aroma.
"I'll just wait out here then," she said with an encouraging smile and a slight wave of her tail. "Go on!"

Quite pleased that he hadn’t earned himself a reprimand yet, Akil stood very still as the pouch was tied around his neck and then literally hopped on the spot with barely contained excitement.
“Yes, mistress, I’ll do my best.” The slave said before he broke into a fast trot towards the slave market. When he reached the door, he stopped abruptly and turned around to look at Haqikah, his hound, his mistress. He grinned happily and crossed the door once again but this as an owned slave on a temporary visit. He was a little afraid he’d make a mistake and waste his mistress’ stones but mostly, he just wanted to do a good job on his very first assignment and impress the hound.

Haqikah watched her new slave Akil enter the slave market again and anyone who knew her would have been able to tell that she was very pleased. She smiled, just a little bit, and even allowed her tail to betray her emotions in a modest wag. The ground looked clean enough, so she sat down while waiting. She was a proper hound again, a hound with slaves, and she couldn't wait to get home and show them off. Surely there was only a matter of time before she was considered the most distinguished lady in Babylon. She just had to play her cards right...-fin-
