Sudi wasn’t feeling particularly hopeful today but his conversation with the cheerful Adham had left some lingering ideas in his mind that stubbornly refused to be quieted anymore. Lying around in a corner playing dead wouldn’t really get him out of this rotten place but he had very little energy to fight against the situation.

Still, he did manage to clean himself up a bit and recover some of the long lost shine his coat once had. It wasn’t as pretty as Adham’s but perhaps the hounds wouldn’t be quite as willing to leave a mark on him if he looked good.

The slave’s chains rattled as he moved to the cage door and dropped his muzzle to rest between the bars and sighed. He could hear the voice of a hound nearby though perhaps it was only his imagination playing tricks on him.

It had been a long journey from Prussia to Zanzibar, but a necessary one. One could not tend a gourd garden by one's self, now could one? It was too much work for one individual, but besides that, it would be better to have a slave to tend the lesser matters so she could take care of the larger issues. Despite being so far from home, her carefully tended patch of land was foremost on her mind as she began strolling through the black market. She'd dismissed the oily hyena that she knew would wheedle her into buying the most expensive of the cats, or try to. She didn't have the stones for it, nor did she have the patience for such nonsense.

She eyed a certain snaggle-toothed male warily. He looked quite ragged and had a hard look in its eye. She wasn't comfortable around slaves taught to fight, and was not pleased to see this one had been chained outside a cage. She carefully circumvented it and moved on, peering in cages. How in the world was she to decide? She'd never bought a slave before, and was beginning to find the task terribly daunting. Whomever she bought would have to be tractable enough to at least get home safely. It was a long trip, and she did not need a kitty that fought her every step of the way.

She bypassed several that looked too weak for the trip, and discarded one for his sheer bulk. She murmured to herself as she paced slowly through the dust, "Now what would grandmama look for in a slave? She wasn't one for good looks, heavens knows. Old Saimin was ugly as a day is long." She shook her head in amusement. No, she didn't so much care about asthetics, except as a personal preference. She would not be buying a kitty strictly for looks.

Or... would she? She paused in front of a cage with a kitty nose sticking out. This one's fur reminded her strongly of freshly tilled earth, rich with nutrients and good for growing things. She paused longer, eyes running over his wavering stripes, then returning to his yellow-green eyes, the color of some of her gourds. For a moment she felt sure that this was the one she wanted... but then gave herself a shake. What was wrong with her? Picking a slave because he reminded her of the garden? She gave a snort and began to move away.

Sudi took a few seconds to realize why the sun didn’t feel quite as warm on his dark coat and without any movement of his body, his light colored eyes rose slowly to meet the hound that shadowed over him. She was looking at him… with interest? She actually didn’t seem quite as bad as the ones that started shouting the minute they met his gaze and Sudi actually found himself wondering if it would be so bad if the hound actually bought him. But, but… she was moving away! The gesture was enough to remind Sudi how very desperate he was to get out of this horrible place.

What would Adham do? He’d wink and shout a “haaaii!” at her, right? He’d be friendly and happy and maybe even pull a smile from a hound or two. Well, Sudi didn’t really know how be that friendly but he had to try something!

“Hello!” he said suddenly trying desperately to make his greeting as loud as possible but barely more than a whisper by anyone else’s standards. “Good morning, miss.”

At first only her ears slanted back towards the earth-striped male she'd just bypassed. She still peered into another cage ruminatively, but one ear remained pointed back towards him, listening. Her attention was split, for here was another slave that was earth-colored, and once again she felt drawn to it. She leaned closer, the one ear still canted to the first she'd preferred. Nose nearly between the bars, she sniffed at the second kitty. Yes, this one was a female, and seemed in good health, if rather skinny. She was a pretty little thing, and would do well for household tasks, 'Zahra surmised.

Trouble was, she'd only come for one slave. She pulled her head back and took a step or two back away from the cages, careful to side-step a small puddle of... something. Her eyes shifted from the female kitty to the male. How to choose? She needed help in both the garden and the house. She was used to do most of the work herself, of course, but... it would be useful to have both. Torn, her ears sort of wilted to either side in her internal conflict. What to do?

After his poor attempt at appearing livelier, Sudi was quickly deflating. At first, he’d seen the hound as the type that quietly browsed through the cages but never really bough a slave. Now, she seemed to be proving him wrong as she seriously considered not one but two slaves!

He glanced at the kitty on the cage next to him and his hopes all but vanished. She was quite pretty with lovely eyes and she’d most likely be the hound’s choice. “Buy me and not her” was not something Sudi could ever say or even think really as the slave would probably be a little happy to see such a pretty girl getting out of this smelly hole even if it meant that he’d have to remain in it. He sighed and lifted one paw to rest on the bars next to his muzzle. Having no chance didn’t mean he couldn’t ease the whole process, maybe make it a little quicker and hopefully making his rejection a little less painful.

“She’s very pretty, miss.” He stated quietly but surely. He’d like to add more but she was suddenly aware that he didn’t know much about the other cat despite their proximity. His fault most likely.

"And you are a handsome feline as well." Dune purred, eyes opening halfway. She was so hot, so tired that it was hard to even speak levelly and act her age. She dragged herself into a sitting position, tail curling around her paws as she regarded the female hound before her. She blinked slowly at the canine. "If I might be so bold, what are you looking for exactly?" She mewed, wondering just why this hound seemed torn between the two earth colored cats. Her question would serve to answer two questions, the Why and to test the waters so to speak.

Would this hound beat her for speaking her mind, for her boldness, or would she accept it as part of her and try to change her behind closed doors? Dune was intelligent enough to know when she could get away with testing her limits, even if it did earn her a beating or three in the long run. She hated to go into things blind.
