She was going to be doing chores with a partner today, and she wasn't sure how that was going to go. She especially wasn't sure how it was going to go, because in her head she kept picturing the partner being the girl Sil.

Prostitute indeed. She thought, hotly, for about the thousandth time. Every time she thought of bells or ribbons or her braid, the conversation jumped back into her mind and made her flush with irritation again.

She was twisting her hair up into a big, clumsy cluster that vaguely resembled a bun and trying to fix it in place with a strip of cloth as she waited, scanning around. They were going to be doing... reeds she thought. Or was it glows today?

Pay more attention, Shards! She cursed herself quietly. Chores were certainly one of the most boring parts of being a candidate, but they could have been worse, and they were a small price to pay for the opportunities.

Tia, who was Tia? Of course, once she asked, she knew. The huge girl. Galeia had all but smacked herself in the forehead for that. How could she forget? Even with the Search dragons working to fill up the barracks before the queen Rose and laid her next clutch, forgetting the immense girl seemed unforgivable, and Galiea searched for the other Candidate around the main cabin with the intent of making a good impression. It wouldn’t be through her appearance, however. She was a pretty enough girl, all dark curling hair, large mysterious eyes and good complexion, but her clothes were ragged, old, and marked with turns-old stains. She would have been hard-pressed to turn the eye of an observant male in this state, which was fine. She hadn't felt very well since she and Winderick had gone out to hunt firelizard eggs…

“Tia,” she called from afar, finally spotting the other Candidate. Galeia closed the gap between them quickly. Her thin shoes whispered tiredly on the stone, at odds with her friendly smile. A small stool was slung over her shoulder. “I’m Galeia. We’re turning glows today together I think.”

Tia didn't see the clothes first, she saw a pretty, smaller girl who looked, at least from her standpoint, like the sort of delicate doll she didn't want to admit being jealous of, and sort of wanted to spend some time dressing up herself. She could picture at least a handful of gowns her mother had made that Galeia would have stopped people dead in, and she dropped her attempts to coral the heavy braid to offer the other girl a hand.

The warm smile was a very welcome change from what she'd been expecting.

"I think I've seen you around." She admitted. "I remember the hair." Who could miss the hair. Or the eyes? And she didn't dress like she was planning on attending a dance right after chores... which was also promising. "That was it. I almost forgot if it was glows or reeds." She admitted with a grimace. "All the chores just sort of run together some days."

Galeia shook her hand and nodded with a knowing grimace. “Tell me about it. I think it’s been eating my memory too. I was an apprentice Harper until a couple of turns ago when I thought I’d give Standing a try, and I think peeling tubers has replaced my memory of flutes and is working on drumming next.” She gave a vague laugh and shook her head. “Well this shouldn’t take us too long. Looks like you don’t even need a stool to reach the baskets and I’m fast with mine.” She wobbled the stool over her shoulder cheerily.

"Maybe we should trade then." Tia joked, with a wry smile. "At least peeling potatoes has something in common with wood working, if not very much."

A Harper? Really? That was interesting, in a somewhat glamorous and smart way, and if she was half as good at it as she was doll like, Tia reasoned it wouldn't take her long to become a Harper of great reputation, once Candidacy had passed. If she didn't impress that was.

Her smile turned a little more wry though as she fidgeted with her bound up hair. "I know, I'm so tall that I have to duck dragons." She joked. "That's what my brothers always say."

It did make changing glows easier anyway, and she didn't have to climb on stools very often, which she didn't mind, so there was some good to being as large as she was.

“Woodworking, huh? I bet you’re the sensible sort.” And even if she were wrong about that, who wouldn’t have liked to hear that? The way the girl was fidgeting with her hair made her wonder often she bothered to pulled it up like that.

She gave a sharp, short laugh at the jest. “Well I always wanted to be tall, but I think this is the best I’ll become. Anyway, are you ready to start?”

"I don't know how sensible I can be." Tia smiled again, in self jest this time. "I came to the Weyr didn't I? Although again I'd trade you. I wouldn't mind being smaller. It's not always that nice being tall... but you're right, let's get these glows turned."

Galeia nodded and they started across the cavern and towards one of the less-visited hallways. Picking up from where they’d left off, she said amicably, “The Harper that taught me my ballads as a child used to say that it’s never nice to be anything all the time, so you have to make your own decisions and stick by them.” Shrugging her stool higher on her shoulder, she glanced at Tia. “Height’s not a decision I guess, but I guess it can be sort of similar.”
