This year the Pasco County Library System's annual battle of the bands show, Rockus Maximus, held a fundraiser for pediatric cancer research at All Children's Hospital (St. Petersburg). Over $2,000 were raised.
I've been volunteering at the Land O Lakes Library for over six years now regularly, and in 2008, my cancer came back. I was 15. It had originally surfaced when I was 9.
I had my second brain surgery to remove the cancerous tumor in October of 2008 at All Children's. This is what inspired the library to start this fundraiser.
I was asked to be the spokesperson for the event, and I gladly accepted the offer.
I even managed to get Motion City Soundtrack to contribute to the fundraiser by name dropping them in a newspaper interview. They sent the library a copy of their album My Dinosaur Life, a stack of promo stickers, two tickets to their St. Petersburg concert that would be occurring in April, and two meet and greet passes to that show.
I- with the help of my parents, their co-workers, and friends- donated $1,000 of the $2,000 raised.
At the show, I was given a surprise set of two extra tickets to Motion City Soundtrack's St. Petersburg show and two meet and greet tickets to that show.
Because I was the top donator, I was also able to shave the head of one of the two librarians who had volunteered to have their heads shaved in honor of the fundraiser.
It was one of the most fun Rockus Maximus shows I've attended :]
I thought I'd share the fundraiser that my local library did with all of you here since the money was donated to cancer research.
