Life had a way of moving on.

People got married, people had families. Jobs were found, jobs were lost. Life moved on. It didn't matter who lived or who died, life went on for those who won.

No matter how much she grew or how much she changed, Rene would find it hard to shake her rather nasty mood. Even with the lack of chains she was still a nasty tempered woman. Her temperament was made even worse by her job; helping tend at her Uncle's bar on nights he'd want off. Since she was of age, he didn't care if she drank. More than once she'd fallen asleep on the couch in the office, too pickled to make the walk home.

It was the morning following one of such nights, and Rene wasn't in the best of moods. She sat scowling at a cup of coffee at a local coffee house, as if she were daring it to judge her.

Why was she spending her nights drunk and her days in a stupor? She had a home, and was even making a bit of a family around herself. Just like her.... Just like someone once had done, she'd taken in children that weren't hers by blood. She had a family, a somewhat stable home, and a somewhat stable job.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

What was she without her chains, without actual rage? There was less of it now. Was there aything below it?

Pathetic. Pitiful.

Just another useless, winged doll.

"Two Americanos and a macchiato?" The low, smooth voice rang through the coffee shop as the young man called out for the second time. To no response, he stepped from behind the counter, carrying the elegant, simple mugs on a small tray, to go in search of their rightful drinkers.

He was clothed in the equally simple, unofficial uniform of the cafe, dark well-fitted slacks and dress-shirt, the sleeves rolled tightly to his elbows. Shoulder length hair, of a startling green hue, was tied back from his face, and his dark skin contrasted with the rest of his green facial hair.

It took him only a moment or two to locate the 'owners' of the drinks, sitting just outside the establishment in their outdoor patio area, and he was shortly back inside, heading toward the counter.

The sight of a customer simply staring at their mug made his brow furrow, and he paused for a moment, finger touching the rim of the mug. "Is the coffee alright, miss?" A pause, as he took the time to actually look her over. No missing the signs of an angellic nature, and a familiar one at that. Interesting. The last time he'd seen her, she'd been imprisioned within her own form. Chains. Quietly, he remained, considering his options. A moment more, and he had words.

"How are you, Rene?"

"I'm alive, aren't I?" The reply was harsh and instant, something that was obviously said frequently to the question. Rene stopped looking at nothing and instead looked to the man who'd asked the question. She didn't recognize him at once, as was likely evidant by her indolent stare. Rene looked tired and very likely looked hungover.

She continued to stare at the man who'd spoken to her, eyes half lidded. She could somewhat place the face, but it'd been quite some time since she'd seen the person. Her eyes scanned him from toe to head.

Ah, there we were. A few neurons hit in her brain, and a name came to mind. At least part of one.

"El, how th'hell have you been?" Rene asked him. Her voice was already starting to display a rasp, likely caused by the cigarattes tucked into her rolled up sleeve. "I'd ask ya t'sit, but I don't wanna getcha in trouble w'work."

"I'm alive, aren't I?" Ellic's voice held a hint of humor as he flashed a quick grin. The years had given him a much better sense of social situations, and he had slowly turned his informational studies to the studies of people, and how they interacted. The cafe was the perfect place for such things.

It seemed as if he'd been doing a bit better than she. Glancing from her, to the espresso bar where one or two customers lingered, he shrugged. "I wouldn't get in trouble, but you're right. I'll be off shift in about fifteen minutes, if you wouldn't mind the company."

It might be nice to 'catch up'. Rene looked like she could use a good talk, or maybe a good not-talk, if she was avoiding something. Shooting her a wink, and hoping she didn't disappear, he strode back to his station, taking a few orders and handling their drinks. Easy.

Rene leaned back in her chair, smirking at Ellic as he walked off. He looked well. How funny, though. They were a bit of a parallel, or something. The angel who bartends at night, the demon who baristas during the day. She kicked her feet up on the chair opposite to herself, letting her eyes close. It'd be nice to talk to some one who wasn't drunk or who didn't scream for whatever he wanted. She loved the brat, she did, but she wanted to drown Zach most days...

She was too damn young for a kid. But she'd been blackmailed into it all the same.

At least one of the little 'Banished Children' was doing well for himself. Rene watched Ellic tend to the various patrons, the first hint of an actual smile on her face. You looked well, Ellic.
