I need book covers big enough to fit my textbooks for school, and I want to make them from plastic bags. Does anybody have any links or guides for how to make them???

Sorry, I don't have any guides, but can't you just simply cut two edges off so that it's one big sheet and then wrap it like you would normal plastic book covering?

You could do a woven plastic book cover.
Pretty simple.
Cut the handles off the plastic bag, cut to make one long rectangle.
Cut into long even strips 1 inch wide.
Use tape on a smooth surface--you can use a piece of cardboard if you don't want to use it on a table.
Then weave the strips together, tape off the lose ends and then wrap the sheet like you would a paperbag book cover.

Have you thought about using other shopping bags, like the ones from Victoria's Secret? Seems like those bags might last longer. (Not from that store, just that type of material.) I used to make my own bookcovers, too, and I'd hate to see you work so hard on something that might come apart or wear through. Some of the plastic bags from the store barely make it to the house without ripping!

Back when I was in school everyone just used brown paper bags. You could decorate them and when they got too shabby and fell off just make some more.
It's a shame your mom isn't supporting your recycling, but maybe you can gently ease her into it in other ways. Try suggesting some things she can reuse and maybe she'll see that it's fun and helpful and begin to share your enthusiasm.

If you get fabric ones(if your mom insists) you can use them for several years and wash them when the get dirty. smile
And when THEY start falling apart, totally reuse the fabric for something! biggrin

When i was back at middle school I bought 4 packages for the fabric stretching book covers and they are still usable today! < And I'm a senior in college now. ^^ They're also very easy to mend, they dry quickly too so it does good when it rains.
Another fun thing about them is that they make a fun hair bow for Halloween. XD And...when you really don't think they will be use anymore, you can make the squishy pillows with them. biggrin
