this weeks recommendation: The Dark Tower saga by Stephen King
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
the first volume in the Dark Tower series, which King considers to be his magnum opus. It was first published in 1982.
although published in 82, the first part of his book also called the gunslinger was published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1978. making this sage over 30 years from first book to last
The story centers upon Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger who has been chasing after his adversary, "the man in black", for many years. The novel follows Roland's trek through a vast desert and beyond in search of the man in black. Roland meets several people along his journey, including a boy named Jake Chambers who travels with him part of the way.
The main story takes place in a world that is somewhat similar to the Old West but exists in an alternate time frame or parallel universe to ours. Roland exists in a place where "the world has moved on." This world has a few things in common with our own, however, including memories of the song "Hey Jude" and the child's rhyme that begins "Beans, Beans, the Musical Fruit".
this books is a must if you have read anything of Mr King in the past (as a lot of his later works are tied in to this and the other 6 books) or if you want to see a world that has "moved on"
sex, violence, magic, parallel universes, destiny and the first steps of Roland Deschain the last Gunslinger on his way to the Dark Tower to try and put right a fractured world await you
-seven books later-
ive read all seven books....and all i can say is wow, just wow, the ending is like....WOW, stephen king you evil git
