Hello! This is my first time making a post so here goes...

I sing tenor in choir because I am a baritone with no low end (my lowest note is a 'C' below 'middle C') Here's the problem. My actual voice part is countertenor. Tenor is a strain on my voice becauase 1. it's too high for my baritone, 2. too low to falsetto, and 3. hard on my voice to keep switching. I want to ask the choir director to see if I can sing alto so it puts less of a strain on my voice. What does everyone think? Should I go ahead and ask the director?

Why not? You don't have anything to lose.

It couldn't hurt to ask. Just explain why you want to change parts, and they'll probably understand.

Switch. And, a little advice... If you can hold out... Wait until you start new songs to switch. I switched from Alto to Soprano (thank goodness sweatdrop ) in the middle of songs and... well... Brain... hurts... Gah.
Let me just say... It was... difficult.

Of course you should ask
I asked my choir director and she ran a few chords with me.
now im in a section most confortable for me :3
You dont have anything to loose
just make sure you change AFTER you finish a song

yeah, i'd tootally ask to sing alto. If anything hurts while you're singing, then you're straining your vocal chords which cant be comfortable. So yes, definately ask. You're lucky you even have the option. Our Choral director won't let boys sing alto. He makes them sing tenor, bass, or baritone.

It couldn't hurt. I have found that Choir directers are genrally understanding when it comes to your own voice. I am a Altoe II, And one of our songs we sing the same notes as Sapranoes, well for next year, and I will more than likely sing it with the Tenors. I don't sing high notes well. But yes I think you should.

If you need to, I would definetly switch... However, you could also go to the choir room during a free period (or your own piano/quiet room at home) and warm up your voice in all registers and you'll find that after a while your voice gets used to it. I had like no range when I first started singing so I understand. Howver, with practice the notes will get easier and easier. Now I sing tenor/baritone/and base with ease just from practicing a lot. Stretch your voice (not to much but enough!). Your voice might hurt a little but the good thing is it will always get better! Go home and practive belting, falsetto and some natural voice to and go up and down over your break, which seems to be at a midrange tenor... maybe middle C area?

I was an alto last year, but it strained my voice to force lower then my range so I'm a soprano now. I've know a few guys who sang alto.
