lol I'm a tad worried about approaching agents. It'd feel like I'm losing control of my baby, and I honestly don't like the idea of having someone else get a cut that's gonna be larger than mine when I get signed. Most authors I've spoken to aren't crazy about it either.
Library of Congress is definitely on the list though. Just gotta make sure I get published first. lol
It's usually a good idea to get it registered first, as proof that it is yours. I'm coming from writing scripts, and before sending them to any producers, it's a MUST to get them registered with the Guild, it's required. I've read that a publisher can register it for you, but if you have a story you're putting out on public domain, like the internet, get yourself protected! if someone decides to steal it and submit it, they can, and registration is the proof! Of course you can mail yourself the story in a stamped envelope and that works as 'proof of ownership' too.
Thus I'm only sending my story out to trusted friends and family, and even then, piece by piece whilst I'm working out my final edits. I know you can have titles, ideas and PARTS of your story registered so the idea can be solely credited to you when you finish. If you do part of it, you can submit the rest of it later when you are finished.
You can submit your stories online to the L.O.C. too, and it's much cheaper. Just a friendly warning. I've seen many a person take down stories they've planned for publication because they've found it re-posted in other places.
The internet can be a scary place sometimes!
