Grazing is a synoym of dodging danmaku. More specifically, dodging the danmaku while being as close as possible to it. That's how you get higher scores on Touhou games, and the more points you get, the more lifes you are awarded.

A VERY important part of this is THE HITBOX, the little "dot" that represents the only place something can actually kill your character. Grazing occurs when bullets are close to your HITBOX without actually hitting it.

Grazing gives you points, too. And in most games, not only is it important to graze... It's NECESSARY.

Late response is late. The point/life system is pretty rare, I think only Mountain of Faith does that, and in that case it's not so much grazing but collecting green picchuns to increase how much your blue picchuns are worth to get higher scroes faster to get an extra. Why am I calling them picchuns? Well the chip things. So there are some Touhou games that reward you for grazing, Imperishable Night and Subterranean Aneurysm in particular.

I'm pretty sure Perfect Cherry Blossom has a fixed points/life rate as well. It's around one extra life per ten million points, or so.

PCB gives you lives depending on the amount of Point items you collect. Each life you get this way increases the amount of blue picchuns (hehe) you need to get before your next life.

As far as I can remember.

You are accurate to within 100th of a hitbox. Blue picchuns are life, they increase the required amount after each extra (I don't remember the intervals). They also happen to be worth alot of points so perhaps this is where it's easy to make a error in judgment.

Well, for reference, I have a nice compiled list of life extend methods and graze effects from my data.
Note that Lotus Land Story and Embodiment of Scarlet Devil are the only games where grazes help towards lives.

PoDD: 10, 20 million points
LLS: 3, 8, 15, 22, 30 million points
MS: Every 100 point items
EoSD: 10, 20, 40, 60 million points

PCB goes by number of point items? I could've sworn I've influenced how soon I got an extra life with intense super-grazing action, but maybe it's always just a weird series of coincidences.

Hmmmmmmmmm........

For the record, I think it's five stars for UFO for the life, and grazing is non existent in UFO as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just checked UFO again, and my data is correct. 4 star pieces for an extend and every 10 grazes increase the point item value gauge by 10 points (There's a reason they're listed, games without some graze system bonus don't list grazes).
