It is lit by a source that only the subconscious mind registers, therefor you are left with the direct impression that you can't actually see the table, but it's there. You can't actually read the paper, but you know what it says and where the lines for the answers are.
Another subliminal light source reveals a single chair. You can't see it, but it looks comfortable.
