Ritual Item Shop

An apprentice may not buy anything in this shop with their own money. Neither may the average citizen. A larger shop, adjacent to the one in question, sells minor items and scrolls for small, personal rituals to be performed at the neighborhood shrines scattered throughout the city.

Items may only be obtained from the smaller, more specialized shop with a written note of permission from a council member, priest, or other high official. Money is not required in most cases - the shop simply charges the price to the credit of the official in question. In cases where the apprentice or citizen is not simply picking up for somebody else, they must pay up front - and the prices are steep, as they are in the bookshop and apothecary

"We need one thing, and one thing only," Kanesakht started the moment they neared the shop. "You are not to touch it, or you will be severely punished. Do you understand?"

The shop, though small, seemed imposing. Dark and forboding might be better adjectives, actually.

"Everything in this shop is off-limits unless I send you to get me something specific. That will not happen until I know I can trust you with my life - these items can be truly dangerous."

"If they're so dangerous, then why do we need something from here?" Sekhmet asked, her tone a forced passive. She was still mad, but she'd do as she was told; she didn't want to mess with dangerous stuff.

"You will see soon enough." He grinned, wickedly, and walked into the shop.

"Eletherta!" he called out, kicking the doorframe as he passed it.

A young woman (who looked much, much too pretty to be working around forbidden, dangerous things) hurried out from the larger, more commercial side of the building. "Yes? Oh! It's you! Yes... hello!" She smiled, waving happily. Could she really be the owner here...?

"I've come to pick up an item in regards to a binding ritual."

"Oooh. Which kind?"

Kanesakht walked over to her, bending down and whispering in her ear.

Sekhmet frowned at the two adults. Why was Kanesakht deliberatly not telling her what sort of binding ritual he need the item for?
'Probably has to do with me,' she figured and frowned all the more. If it had to do with her, then she should have a right to know what it was. She sat where she was and allowed her tail to lash, though it did little to cool her anger.

"... Oh!" cried Eletherta, jumping back and covering her mouth with her hands. "That's... you're sure?"

Kanesakht nodded, shifting his weight to one foot and balancing his book on his hip. "Just get it, would you? Wrapped would be nice."

She nodded and trotted off. A few minutes later, she returned with a medium-sized object wrapped in soft cloth, tied with twine. "Here. Just charge that to your account?"

"Mm. That'd be nice. Marseth already swindled me out of most of my money on hand." He reached out and took the object. As it changed hands, there was a flash of metal in a gap in the fabric. It was gone quickly, but...

Had that been a blade?

Sekhmet's eyes widened slightly at the shine. Like a little magpie, she was drawn to things with high luster and this definately shown. But that also confused her.

What kind of binding spell required that? And what would be done with whatever it was? Was it as dangerous as Kanesakht made it out to be? Or was he just trying to goad her temper?

All those questions and more flashed through her head. And she had not a single answer to put to them. The frustration that came with the unanswered questions made her even more angry. She straightened her shoulders in an attempt to look impassive. It failed.

"Well, Eletherta, I believe that will be all. I'll leave you to get back to your shop managing." He smiled. It was little more than a smirk, but it seemed genuine.

"Come, Sekhmet. Stop trying to look imposing. We have some things to discuss at home."

Kanesakht exited the shop without looking back.

Eletherta knelt by Sekhmet, reaching out her hand to scritch the girl's ears. "Oh, I'm sure you'll do fine! Just remember - keep your wits about you. Kanesakht enjoys tests and riddles. Now, go on, before he gets mad." She winked, then stood and headed into the main shop.

Sekhmet shied away from her hand when she scratched her ears. She didn't really like touchy-feelly people, but this one was hard to not like.

She vowed to try anyway, though.

With a frown, she turned and ran after Kanesakht, still wondering what the item was and what it was for. She wouldn't ask, though. It would show that she was curious and right now indifference seemed to be a better choice. She didn't say a word as she followed him.

Shandar stepped into the Item shop before Akhetnnami and glanced around. Yet again he was pleasantly suprised. This city was proving to be far more interesting than he had first anticipated. This shop was darker than the last, curious objects all around.

It reminded him of the rooms in Hakim's house he had been forbidden to enter. Now and again he had been able to catch glimpses here and there as Hakim went in and out, doing research and cleaning precious items. Oh how he had wanted to see inside.

Stopping in the middle of the small shop he waited patiently for Akhetnnami, transfixed by the interesting objects and the power they might hold.

Eletherta bounded out, skidding to a halt a few feet from Shandar. She beamed at him, eyes sparkling, bouncing on her toes. "Oooo, you must be one of the new apprentices! Right?"

Akhetnnami nodded as she entered. "Mm. This is Shandar. Shandar, this is Eletherta. She runs the shop."

Eletherta nodded enthusiastically, kneeling to ruffle the fur under Shandar's chin. "So cute! Ooo, I normally don't get to see children much at all!"

Shandar blinked as the rather bright woman came bounding into the shop. She was quite clearly insane.

Shandar eyed her suspiciously and almost recoiled in disgust as she bent down to ruffle the fur under his chin. If he had been less refined he might have lashed out or bitten her. Instead he settled for a steady glare stepping back level with Akhetnnami.
"Pleased to meet you." He said slowly, taking offence at being called cute.

Eletherta stepped back a little, biting her lip and looking sad. "M'sorry," she whimpered at his glare, recoiling a little more.

"Shandar," Akhetnnami said. A warning. Then she turned to Eletherta more formally. "We're only just stopping in. Don't need anything for tomorrow. But would you like to attend?"

"I'd love to, but I can't." She rubbed the scales on the back of her head sheepishly. "Promised Aldrasath I'd help him move some of his store around. Spring cleaning and all."

Akhetnnami nodded. "Alright, then. Well, if that's all... one last stop, Shandar. Down to the book store."

Eletherta waved to the two. "Bye!" she chirped
