(( I don't have a preference to whom Duhkha and Lan meet. x3 <3 ))

"Cold." The orange fox sneered up at Duhkha, giving himself a full body shake to get the chilly white flakes off of his fur, and lifting a paw to stare distainfully at the snow encrusted there.

"I know."

"Care not."

Duhkha simply shrugged. He'd never figure out why some creatures just didn't like the cold.

The two creatures- as odd a pair as there ever was, being fox and wolf respectively, and not at each other's throats... most of the time- were wandering near to the edges of the freelands. Duhkha had met so many wolves when he was on the innards of the lands, he had wanted to have a little breathing space, at least for a while. The omega tendancies he had been beginning to overcome- the shyness he would never grow out of.

"Coldblood idiot." Lancaster gave the surroundings another disgusted glance- he couldn't wait until spring.

(( *snugs Jes* So glad you joined this! >3

Oh! Are Akamu and Lavena going to be entering the breeding raffle again? They sure would have some hot babies! XD *loves all over Akamu's pretty coat* ))

Nessa was paused in a clearing for a moment, scenting the winds by habit. The chill that swept in burned her nostrils, and the young gamma shook herself. These late winter spells! Warm one day and cold as ever the next. She marvelled to herself, how would those new buds all around her, just breaching out from the young sapplings survive?

The mixed array of scents were dulled, hardened by the cold temperature, but there was an unmistakable aroma of wolf, as well as strong scent of fox, a smell Nessa had encountered before, but always fainter than now. Curious, she perked her cobalt pitched ears up and began a slow amble towards the scents.

Nessa had met many wolves in her life, growing up along the banks of a river that cut through both free land and her family's, and not one had ever spurned her with ill intent. There was always an air of caution about the female when meeting new wolves, but never quite fear, or even worry. She was simply not accustomed to such encounters.

As she paced, ahead of her she caught sight of two figures, moving beside eachother on this winter morning. One was clearly a wolf, but the other... a fox! A pulse of interest coursed through the navy she's body. She'd heard tales of wolves dealing with foxes, but had never encountered such herself.

Noting the slightly reserved motion of the wolf's pace, Nessa canted her muzzle and called from a good ten yards away. "Hello, there!" She greeted in an amiable tone, slowing her pace slightly.

(( I'm glad, too! XD

I would love for them to! ... But probably not. I haven't seen Shinz or Lavena around in months, and the most relationship the wolves have is a crush on each other. D': But I agree. They would have some hella hot babies. *uses magic mind powers to bring Shinz back* gonk ))

Lancaster was the one to react first, turning his head towards Nessa's call (and herself), bringing his ears to full attention, and freezing so well that a foreign human would comment about statues. Soon, though, he relaxed into his normal casually superior pose. Only another wolf, and happy at that. No danger.

Duhkha was slightly slower to react, but didn't do so to the length that Lancaster had. He only turned towards Nessa, ears perked, with a startled expression on his face. His body didn't change at all.

"...Hello!" He called at a just loud enough voice to be heard. Regardless of their reactions, both creatures were obviously surprised to see Nessa. Winter wind had benumbed their noses to a shameful extent. And one of them was sniffling.

Idiot wolf. Never asked the right questions.

"Doing here?" Lancaster had a bored look on his face, but little things- the twitching movements of his tail, and the position of his ears, betrayed curiousity.

"He means... well, we didn't expect to see anyone friendly out here." Duhkha himself had been anticipating angry packs saying something about invasion.

(( Blegh, I have sucky short posts. XP ))

(( They were in the last raffle, right? I think in her announcement Jade said as long as they have some for of relationship likely to develop it was okay. I know Tahja was wondering if you guys would enter. X3

A couple couples who are entering wouldn't even be around for a few months after the breeding took place.

But either way! Akamu is one pretty boy! =O *adores natural colored wolves* ))

Nessa trotted the distance between the pair until she was only about five paces from the couple before her. Her thickly feathered tail danced out behind her in a high, pleased wag, proud, but not imperial in any way. She cast her vision over the brown-pelted wolf, and olive hued eyes lit up at the voice coming from the fox. She didn't bother to hide her excitement at an interspecial encounter and subconsciously, part of her mind hoped the fox wouldn't be offended by her curiosity.

She listened attentively to Duhkha, her eyes meeting his for a moment as he spoke. "I was just out on a morning walk." She said brightly, voice directed at both, her pink tongue lolling gently from the cage of her ivory teeth. "My mate and I have had a lot to think about these past few days."

Nessa was pleased at the seemingly genial air of the encounter, and at the lack of the formality her father thrived on, which she personally found a little suffocating at times. "My name's Nessa," She introduced before she forgot, leaning forward slightly on her pitchy colored paws with a smile. "What are you two up to? Are you traveling together?" Her last question was a bit of a slip, for indeed it was quite obvious they were.

(( And no you don't! Your posts are dandy! XD ))

(( I think I will enter, then, if only to see if I actually can. xD

Thank you! ;o; <3 Akamu is me luff.

... Why yes, I'm quite biased. surprised ))

"My name's Duhkha." There was some uneasiness there about being looked directly in the eyes. He shifted his to the right a bit, breaking the contact. His old pack had considered such an act a challenge, and it was hard to break old habits.

"Lancaster." No uneasiness here at all.

"We're not really doing anything, I guess.. "

"Going Noplace In Particular." Lancaster commented, acting as if he wasn't talking to either wolf, having occupied his body with sitting down and cleaning some of the snow off his paws. He sounded, as he was always wont to sound, sarcastic and superior.

"Er... Right." Duhkha laid his ears back slightly in a bit of embarrassment. "And.. Well, I think you might be able to say we're travelling together.. Lancaster's never really told me why he's around."

"Secret." Came the succulent reply.

"... Anyway... You said something about your mate. Is anything wrong?" Nosy, yes, and not a question the newly-unpacked Duhkha would have dared ask... but he couldn't really think of anything else.

At the question, one of Lancaster's ears focussed on Nessa, and he paused in what he was doing. Superior he may be, but this fox liked to know things.

(( WHOOO! Super congrats on your puppies, Jes! ^O^ They're all so sweet! ))

Noting the seemingly uncomfortable effect of locking his gaze with hers, Nessa quickly made a not to avoid doing it again in the future. She pursed her lips slightly. She certainly still had a lot to learn about others, especially if she was to be of any use on that inevitable battle field.

Shifting her weight slightly, she cast a soft smile on the two before her. It was clear they'd been traveling for a while, for each seemed to anticipate the actions of the other so they appeared to function almost as a single unit.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Duhkha and Lancaster."

She flicked an ear curiously at the fox's guarded response, then tilted her muzzle towards Duhkha's question. "Oh..." She began, secretly glad to give the story to another. The more she seemed to say it, the realer it became in her mind. "Kouji's father has turned tyrant on his old pack, he won't let anyone leave. His mother and sister barely got out alive." She sighed. "We're going back to do battle on Kouji's behalf. We're hoping to liberate the pack--" Suddenly the shewolf chuckled nervously, and it was clear from her slight change in posture that she was worried at the moment. "It all sounds so grand when I say it aloud, but really I'm scared."

(( Oh hey, totally random curiosity, but it's been bugging me forever! XD

I vaguely remember you co-winning the shaman contest a while ago. Did you, by any chance, get Duhkha in that event? =O ))

(( *squeal of happiness about the pups* >w
Yes, I got Duhkha from that contest. The story parts I submitted didn't match what they wanted for Sol-Lun, but they liked the potential of the story a lot, so... out came Duhkha. x33 *was so incredibly lucky* <3~ ))

Lancaster had looked at Nessa impatiently when she conveyed her gladness at meeting them, wanting her to go ahead and give him her information. Then, when she finally did, he looked at her slyly.

"War?"

War? That's what it sounded like. But, if they were going to fight an entire pack...

"Do you have many wolves to help you?" They won't win with just her and her mate..

Duhkha had started momentarily at the description of Kouji's father, reminded unexpectedly about his old pack, who were so strict and isolated in themselves that leaving was unthinkable, unless one was forced to leave.

"You should be scared."

Lancaster's comment, said with an approving nod, shook Duhkha out of his thoughts. "How big is.. Kouji's father's pack?" How much chance do you think you have? The unspoken question.

Duhkha was naturally a pessimistic wolf. He was never satisfied with himself, especially now, among other things. So, without meaning to insult Nessa and Kouji's ability to fight, he doubted their chances. He couldn't help it. To him, Nessa's fear that Lancaster approved so much of made complete sense to him.

(( Oh man, that's too cool! *twirls* ^O^ Now you've got me all curious! XD Does that mean Duhkha will be a shaman one day? :O ))

"Yes." She said softly in reply to the rusty hued fox. "I suppose it is a war." Her ears had pricked up now, alertly, her form taking on a stronger, more rigid look as if in defense from the word. War. What we she doing at the head of a war?

"We have only a few on our side so far. There are members of the pack who would surely try to join in the fight, but there are also loyalists to Chen who may stop them from helping. And Chen has allies..." Her tone had changed from the friendly voice she'd used before, had shifted into a more calculated sound. Pictures played behind those olive green eyes as scraps of strategies bubbled up. Nessa stored them away for later. "Many allies. All in all we'd be up against twenty or so wolves." She said, expression grim.

"I know we don't stand a chance alone, but we've got to try. We can't just... sit idly by..." In that instant, Nessa's character was completely clear. A hoper. A dreamer. An optimist. An idealist. But that wasn't enough to win a battle such as this.

"We're gathering as many as we can." Was all she could follow with, stumbling slightly over her own words, her tail curling behind her form.

(( No, Duhkha will forever be only Duhkha unless he lands a roll in the next Shaman/Seer rolls. x3 Jade just said she didn't want the story to just poof, so gave me Duhkha to put it to. :3 ))

He laid his ears back a degree or so, made nervous again at the mention of the now-named father of Kouji, and the size of his pack and allies. That wasn't good. Nessa was right, they wouldn't stand a chance alone, but..

She was optimistic. She wanted to go through with it anyway, even though she and her mate stood a good chance of dying. She was even gathering other wolves, or trying to.

His ears went down a little further, but not in fear this time. He did not want such a hopeful wolf to die. She was, at least in part, what he wanted to make himself into. A less pessimistic, depressive wolf.

But the only way he'd do that, is if he tried. And he hadn't tried yet, not very hard.

"I'll... I'll help you, if I can."

He hadn't been half aware of the words before he spoke them, but they were strengthening in their own right, standing his ears up again. The only way he'd know if Nessa and her mate won was to help. And the only way to better himself, that he could see, was to help.

He was still nervous, though.

"I will, also." Lancaster offered his own services, though through less graceful means. He was scratching at his neck with a hind leg, when he said it. "This is interesting." And he liked what was interesting. Liked to keep it around. It added spice to life.

Plus, it would bugger at his mind endlessly if he didn't help. How annoying.

"Oh--" Nessa said softly, her spring-green eyes widening slightly as they focused on Duhkha's face, then quickly danced away as she remembered his uneasiness. Her ears flicked forward in alert and she smiled. "We'd love to have your help!" Her voice pitched slightly in excitement and a happy, slightly abashed grin took charge of her face.

She swept over both the wolf and the fox with her gaze. "I didn't mean to rush either of you into this, of course you can have time to think about it if you'd like." But secretly, her heart thrilled, pumping with joy. This was what Nessa loved most about the woods she'd grown up in; crossing paths with others such as this who would offer their help to you the same way you might try to for them. To be sure, there were many different personalities in Shaoilin Woods, but it was uncanny how many wolves you could rely on in a pinch, even seemingly strangers.

"We'd planned to set out sometime this week." She said, rotating her body slightly as the sun behind the two rendered her vision useless at her current angle.

"And it's not just fighters we need if either of you would prefer other odd jobs. Scouting, spying, strategizing..." She shivered slightly but tried not to let it show. Battle. She was going into battle. The one thought that kept fear from taking too great of a hold on her heart was the fact that she would not be alone.

"We chose." Lancaster looked at Nessa askance, as if doubting her ability to realize the fact. He had done it for information, Duhkha had done it for... whatever reason he had for it. Nessa had only said that her pack and her mate's would go to war.

His eyes lit craftily at the mention of the other duties that would need to be filled.

"Spying?" He decided that it was a very good decision to lend his aid. Spying was exactly what he enjoyed doing best. He might help strategize a little, as well, if he thought they needed him. "Good."

For his part, Duhkha shook his head at the female's insistance that he could rethink his offer. He may not be a very brave wolf, but he didn't like to go back on his word, even if he hadn't said 'I promise', or more binding yet, 'I swear.'

"We'll help..however we can." He smiled a little. "We'll find you then, in a week?"
