Why Advanced/Literate Roleplaying?

Well, I believe that people will respect you more if you roleplay at a higher standard. Plus, advanced/literate roleplaying is much more fun. Here, which one is better?

Bad Roleplay

*walks in and chops ur head of* Ha ha you’re dead

Good Roleplay

[insert name here] walked towards the person cloaked in black. [insert name here] was a fighter on a mission. He was not to be toyed with. There was a dagger in his pocket; as he walked towards his victim, he fingered the dagger anxiously. Making sure no one was around, he took out his dagger and attacked the man mercilessly. The man fell to the ground – his life gone.

Well, obviously, the good roleplay. See what I mean? When you’re a literate roleplayer, you can do so much more! And your literacy skills will probably improve – I know mine has.

Advantages of Advanced/Literate Roleplaying

Here is a list of great advantages for those who are still not convinced.
1. You’re respected more.
2. It will help you (if you’re still in school) on your literacy skills.
3. It’s fun.
4. It’ll probably help you on your typing skills.

Starting Off

Well, to start with, you need to join a roleplay. It’s a good idea to refer to section 4 when you are creating a new character.

In advanced roleplaying, you need to put in the right punctuation. Yes, all that stuff you learnt when you were 6 or 7 is actually useful!

You need to be able to spell. If you’re a bit stuck on a spelling, find a spell checker. Microsoft Word has an excellent spell checker. There are also many sites which have spell checkers on them.

Yes, I know grammar is sucks but it’s a key point in advanced roleplaying. Remember when you were only 6 or 7 and your teacher was teaching you grammar? Well, use it then!

Sentence Structure

Composing proper sentences is very important in advanced roleplaying.

An active sentence has the noun before the verb.
Example: Mary broke the window.
The noun is ‘Mary’ and the verb is ‘broke’.

A passive sentence is when the verb is before the noun.
Example: The window was broken by Mary.
Again, the noun is ‘Mary’ and the verb is ‘broke’.
Tip: Most passive sentences use the word ‘by’ in it.

There are also other ways of constructing a sentence. Some sentences start with an adverb or possibly an adjective.
Example: Accidentally, Mary broke the window.

Some sentences are made where no one appears to be doing the verb.
Example: The window was broken.

Try to use a mixture of sentences!

Elaborate

Following on from sentence structure, you should try to make long sentences. Sentences which are short often contain no detail and are very boring. Here are some of the ways of elaborating a sentence.

Basic Sentence: The bee flew onto a flower.

Where?
The bee flew onto a flower in the field.

Why?
The bee flew onto a flower in the field to collect nectar.

Description
The yellow and black striped bee flew onto a purple flower in the vast field to collect some sweet nectar.

Clauses
The yellow and black striped bee, who was only two years old, flew onto a purple flower in the pansy field to collect some sweet nectar.

Adverbs
The yellow and black bee, who was only two years old, flew carefully onto a purple flower in the pansy field to collect some sweet nectar.

Wow! From a 6-word sentence to a 26-word sentence! That’s an extra 20 words! See how easy it is? I’m sure that others can find some other ways to stretch a sentence.

I’m not saying all your sentences should be 20+ words but you should try to include some. A decent amount of words in a sentence is about 10+. However, if you are trying to create a tense, fast effect, use shorter sentences. You should try a mix of sentences.

Example: Tom, who was only 14 years old, sat on his swivel, office chair, typing up an essay for his teacher. It was nearing midnight – a dangerous time - and he was feeling sleepy. Suddenly, he heard a creaking noise. No one was in the house except from Tom. Was it a burglar? Was it a murderer? Or was it just a cat? Tom didn’t know. Quickly, he darted out of his chair and ran towards the kitchen where he thought the sound was. Bang! The sound of a gunshot was heard. Tom ran. He was terrified.

Notice how, at the start, there is a nice, long sentence. And then, as it nears the middle, the sentences start to get shorter. Then, there’s another long sentence before a very short one. The passage ends with two short sentences.

So, as you can see, short sentences create fast, tense situations and long ones are mainly used for description and a more relaxed situation.

Punctuation

Punctuation, right, well, I cannot stress enough how important punctuation is! Without punctuation, roleplaying is probably unreadable. It is so hard to grasp the meaning of a passage without punctuation.

Example: private no entry allowed

Now, the sentence above could lead to two meanings.

Private. No entry allowed.

OR

Private? No! Entry allowed.

See! Punctuationless (ok, so I made that word up) sentences are so hard to read!

List of Punctuation:

CAPITAL LETTERS – Be sure there is a capital letter ONLY when it’s the start of the sentence or when there’s a proper noun (a place name, a person’s name etc.). Capital letters can also be used for ‘shouting’ or loud noises. They may be used for emphasising something. Try not to use capitals all the time though.
Example: The boy was rather naughty BUT he could be good when he wanted to.

Full Stops/Periods/‘.’ – Make sure that every sentence ends in a full stop/period unless it ends in an exclamation mark, a question mark or ‘…’
Example: The boy walked down the pavement.

Exclamation Marks/! – When there is an exclamation or a dramatic sentence, end it with an exclamation mark instead of a full stop/period.
Example: It was so huge!

Question Marks/? – When a question is asked, end it with a question mark.
Example: Who’s there?

Commas/’,’ – Commas are used when you need to take a breath. These can also separate sub-ordinate clauses from main clauses.
Example: The boy, who was very clever, had built a brilliant, metal, time machine.

Dashes and Brackets – Dashes and brackets are used to show extra information.
Example: The boy (from class 6M) fell down the stairs – again – and hurt his wrist.

Semi-colons – Semi colons are used to join two sentences about the same thing together.
Example: Harry walked towards the lights; the lights suddenly flashed on.

Colons – Colons are used to show why something happened or how something happened.
Example: The boy walked up to his mum: he had to show her something.
OR they can be used to show a list or to erm, it’s hard to explain, like what I do after every example. You know, the bit that goes Example‘:’

Speech Marks – Speech marks are used to show the EXACT words that a person says.
Example: Tom said to his mother, “I got you that book you wanted.”

Spelling

When roleplaying, you must check that you have spelt every word correctly before you actually let people see your roleplaying post. If possible, get a spell checker for those of you who can’t spell proprely or spell badly.

It’s ok to let loose a typo every now and again but don’t make typos if you can help it.

Chatspeak is a definite no-no in advanced roleplaying.
Example: *walks up to u* hi how u doin?

It looks terrible! Don’t shorten words unless you use a universal abbreviation (such as mins for minutes). Type you instead of ‘u’. Type your or you’re instead of ‘ur’. Get my drift?

Fun Bit: I have made a deliberate typo somewhere in this spelling section. Can you find it?

Grammar

Ah yes, grammar sucks, I know, but it’s very important in advanced roleplaying. Your posts have to make sense if you want people to read them! Grammar is very confusing and I’d rather not go into great length about it. But I’m sure that everyone learns about grammar when you’re 6 or 7…so just try to remember it, ok?

Grammar also means tenses (past, present or future). Try to avoid using future tense as that creates confusion:

Example: Bob will pick up that stone. He will throw it and it will hit someone.

It doesn't look very good does it?

Using past tense is often a good way to RP although it will probably be more useful in story mode than action mode.
Past tense is when you refer to something as if you (well, in this case, your character) had already done it.

Past tense.
Example: Bob picked up the stone. He then threw it and hit someone.

Ok, maybe that was a bad example.

Most users use present tense because it is easier to use when RPing.

Example: Bob picks up the stone. He throws it and it then hits someone.

Now, I reckon that example looks the best.

Another note: choose one tense and STICK WITH IT! Nothing is more annoying than seeing this:

Example: Bob will pick up the stone. He threw it and it had hit someone.

Note: Thank you to Ratreoz for helping on the tense part and for correcting me.
