Let me explain. I am doing a bunch of health modules for my husband because his employer gives him paid time off for being "healthy". The program is called SimplyWell and they basically try to cut costs for the company's health insurance but these webcasts are so full of crap that it's making me sick. You earn points for watching films and interactive brainwashing lessons as well as getting regular screenings for cholesterol PSA, etc. and you earn points for getting flu and pneumonia vaccines! Naturally he wants to take part because who doesn't want PTO? And he's into fitness and being healthy but not the way I am. He believes what those in power say. Doctors should know better than I do, right? I'm just glad he isn't listening to them himself because he might actually fall for it. For example, they're praising the Food Pyramid scheme, discussing good calcium channel blockers for heartburn and recommending birth control pills for females with acne, just to name a few. They also said that composite toot fillings are untested for long term use saying they've only been around for ten years. Therefore metal is recommended and gold is best. What? I've only had one cavity and that was was when I was eleven. I'm thirty-one now and my filling is composite. I know they weren't even new back then. They also had a video with "good" stretching exercises and a cartoon man was doing wall squats with his knees way out over his toes. It makes me sad and frightened that most average people watch this sort of BS and think they're getting the best information because the doctors in the videos said so. Just look at where they get their hosts from: I tell you, the only one that wasn't full of pharmaceutical promotion and misdirection was the module called "How to Brush Your Teeth Effectively"

I think doing squats improperly actually damaged my knees. My PE teacher was clearly misinformed.

[Kegan] I think doing squats improperly actually damaged my knees. My PE teacher was clearly misinformed. Ahah. That gave me a chuckle, sorry about your knees. I work at the health center at the college, needless to say that I can see where you're coming from. Our office has a million purell bottles strategically placed everywhere, I hate purell. When it comes to having "jobs" I tend to take care of the plants and blood drives. We have special diet challenges where you can win prizes for losing weight. It was called "Spring into Shape!" and I thought it was the most ridiculous thing ever. You were basically required to come into the health center every week and get weighed by one of your peers.

And let's not forget a complete ban on anyone saying that a non-prescription-medicine consumable does anything good to your health.
And not to mention the half-dozen "cures" for cancer that are all-natural (like eating a lot of garlic) but which you are discouraged by doctors from attempting, even in conjunction with standard Hospital treatments, despite carrying no risk and a chance of gain, because "eating garlic is untested"
I cannot even imagine following food pyramid protocols. Even if the proportions were right, the sheer AMOUNT of food recommended throws me off (really? 6 slices of bread, 8 baseballs in size of fruits and vegetables, 2-3 palm-sizes of meat, and 3 cups of yogurt? Where is this all supposed to go?) I couldn't eat that much of something I love, let alone things I am not fond of.
I always laugh though, when they tell you that they don't know exactly how some new disease is spread, but the best way to prevent it is ALWAYS washing your hands. Flu germs can hang around in the air for weeks in the winter, your water is easily accessible for sabotage, but washing your hands will cure all that!

I think my (least) favorite heath propaganda are the claims that we NEED grain to have a healthy diet, and women NEED yogurt for healthy colons. (Oh, however did we survive those 250,000+ years before agriculture?)
Ever notice how it's only women who need special foods to maintain those ever-so-delicate biochemical balances? We never see men being constantly told that they need, say, V8 or something to keep their penises healthy. confused

People in positions of power need to chill with the body policing.

I've unfortunately become weary of modern medicine and practices. I understand that there are some medical measures that are needed because natural things may not help or help enough, but reading some of the publicly released "papers" just makes me lose trust. They're so misleading, that and the food pyramid would make me obese, including the revised pyramid. sad

How could one Food Pyramid encompass the needs of all different body types?
I am amazed when some of my peers say they would not try any type of herbal remedy, ie a melon cream or applying heat in the morning, or ect because they prefer off the shelf medications and sometimes prescription meds to using a salve or aromatherapy or smoking a plant. I am much more inclined to trust something of the earth over something of the doctors of today. What with the fact that you can make so much money as a doctor, we should all be initially wary that these people may have motivations other than our good health at heart. Find a good family doctor who can appreciate the holistic approach, if possible.

Every time I go to the doctor (except the dentist) they try to put me on so many different medications for all of my many 'problems'. Yes, I am a smoker, but I don't think an antidepressant is going to make me want to smoke any less. I think the side effects of some of these drugs are actually worse than the illness they are designed to treat! I also agree about the food pyramid. If I followed it with the 'proper' daily servings, I'd be as big as a house.

I often wonder if the side effects are a result of isolating certain compounds; there are many drugs that were created from natural plants. My guess is, some herbal medicines don't have drastic side effects because there are other compounds in the plant that buffer side effects. I also hate going in for a sore throat and being given antibiotics. I'd like to wait until the lab result come back, thanks.
