Oh wow; a lot of those are super interesting.
I just don't understand why so many low income families are overweight.. it's cheap to eat healthy; planning ahead is key.
Also.. all those areas with high soda intake need it to be replaced with water and tea.. they'd start shedding the pounds and saving money instantly.
I think the states need a junk food tax. xd

It's really not that easy to eat healthy on little income, especially in winter months when you can't grow much on your own. There's an upcoming documentary called Food Stamped that addresses the issue. I know for a fact I would save a lot of money eating from McDonald's Dollar Menu over what I'm doing now.

In my opinion a junk food tax wouldn't help anything unless every bit of revenue earned from it went to making healthier foods cheaper and more widely available, and it wouldn't because that's not how the government works. We need to make urban gardens in every town and city and educate people on making smarter choices, not punish them for eating what they can afford.

I agree with Ellevemia. Education is key - and if you pay attention, you can see that not only is the south-east quarter the unhealthiest, it's also the least-educated.

Personally, I'd rather the government didn't start telling us what we should and shouldn't eat, because quite frankly I'd rather not have the enforcement of food pyramidiocy become government policy.

Maybe junk food used to be more expensive.. I'm going off when I was a young child and my mom was on welfare trying to support us.. she could only afford fruits and veggies we never had junk food in the house since she couldn't afford it. XD

That's actually really sad when food that is overprocessed and filled with so many extra things is more expensive then the real thing.

I just don't understand why someone would feed their children crap off the dollar menu.. they are growing.. they need all the nutrients they can get feed yourself the crap if you want but for children give them what they NEED.

Maybe junk food tax isn't the way to go.. but there needs to be a lot more knowledge on what our bodies need how they work with certain foods.

(especially seeing how bad, our medical takeover is)

I don't think entire foods should be banned so much as unnecessary additives.

I think the cheaper nature of fast foods does have everything to do with shelf-stability. If you order a salad at Wendy's it's almost ten dollars, but they will sell you a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for one dollar. Places like that buy billions of processed random beef part patties and dehydrated bacon which could last for years in a freezer but the lettuce and fresher ingredients don't last as long.

Even though the salads in a fast food joint are made with lower quality ingredients, they are still perishable and therefore cost more to transport and store because they don't last long.

Also anything made with corn syrup is cheap because that's our biggest crop so it's easier to come by. If you want cane sugar you have to import it from the tropics which costs big bucks.

Organic vegetables are just naturally produced in a lower volume due to rotting and pests and therefore they are more 'rare' than heavily treated vegetables.

Organic raised meat is naturally smaller and less muscular. It takes more cattle to produce a volume of beef than it does when dealing with hormonally altered cattle.

There are a lot of reasons why junk food is less expensive but we have to try to counter those reasons, basically by encouraging everyone to grow their own.

Does anyone know the governer who said something along the lines of: "reduced lunches are a waste of time; feeding the poverty stricken will only encourage them to procreate"?
